Also known as Whitehall Road Level Crossing.
This is a rare User Worked level crossing near Canterbury where barriers have to be pumped up using a lever. Users can only cross when the light is green. There is a separate lever to lower the barriers once the vehicle has crossed. You can get fined for not closing the barriers after crossing. It is more work than you think to raise the barriers!

There's one on Northwall Road, Deal, Kent. I spent hours there as a kid in the early-mid 80s and would pump the barriers for farm traffic. Even got 50p once! :D

I wanted to re-cteate my most popular video from this crossing by showing just the barriers being raised using the levers. The train is seperate.

Thanks! 😊 The train filmed is in a separate video. I decided to show the barriers being pump raised as one individual video. Yeah, it does take a few minutes (and a lot of effort) to raise these barriers manually 😉

I've been to this level crossing before, it's near the nice Stour Way Walk from Canterbury to Chartham. I actually prefer not to cross these types of level crossings because they aren't the safest. Even if the light is green, the train could come speeding up all of a sudden. It's not safe like the typical level crossing you get in urban areas.

Yeah, I love Canterbury and the surrounding area, it's really nice. I've walked around Wye, Chilham, Chartham and here before, as-well as around Broad Oak, Sturry and Grove Ferry, beside the Great Stour. This is a User Worked crossing so there's a slightly longer wait than usual from the light going red to the train passing. I think it's safe here.

Annoying one barrier is slower than the other

It's usually one barrier is opened, followed by the other one. They don't raise together.

You can't lower the gates unless the train is nearby, the light will turn green after you raise the barriers after the train.

You can raise and lower the barriers at any point, but you're only permitted to cross when the light is green. The light turns red when a train approaches and goes green once its passed.
