Punctuation, such as the semicolon and colon, is a key ingredient of writing. It is especially important when writing formal academic essays, such as for the IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, CAE, etc. In this video, we look at a couple of the most confusing punctuation marks (;) and (:), to see how and when they should be used.
General functions: 0:35
Semicolon: 2:07
Colon: 7:56

"Use a semicolon to show a relationship. Use a colon to introduce a list or define something clearly. " On your last example, I could make an argument that either a colon or a semicolon would work based on your rule. I appreciate the effort though and I know it's not an easy thing to teach in a 16 minute lesson. I checked out your website and I can see you put a ton of work into it. Going to peruse it now. :)

Oh my goodness! This the most clear and comprehensive video I have found about semicolons; for instance, you show every possible way to write something, the examples are real life and usable, and it's not even boring. Ha! I'm already using my new knowledge :-)

Great video, Adam! This stuff is really not simple, and then, when the dash jumps in, it gets even more complicated. Especially, in places where you simply want to slightly pause the flow of the sentence without breaking it apart. If anyone's interested in further material on punctuation and elegant writing in general, I'd suggest William Strunk and E.B. White's The Elements of Style. A classic. Might come in handy even for non-native speakers/writers, btw.

Sir, thanks for your videos! I've been watching it since I began to learn English 3.5 years ago. Your content is amazing and super useful. I've got a question (a bit irrelevant to the video) about commas. If we have two independent clauses as objects of a preposition, should we use a comma (and a conjunction) to indicate that? For example, 'I noticed that people were running around, and birds were flying in frantic efforts to find nutrition". Is the comma before 'and birds...' needed? Another thing that I'd like to ask is whether we should put a comma between two independent clauses that are short in length. I've seen many writers omit this. For instance, 'I run, and I eat much'. I would really appreciate to hear from you because you are one of a few whom I can trust and whose opinion and knowledge have much sense to me.

Hello Sir, I have a question concerning the part of your video that starts at 11:03. Would it be acceptable and correct if you cross out the last comma from the sentence and leave it as "... including A, B and C."? Or is it a must that you must put a comma, even though you're going to enumerate the last element (in that case - "C")?

Hello Sir. There are a lot of things your are doing well sir. You are talented and hard worker: this is seen in your work. I like that you are visible in the little window and take advantage of the whole screen for the text. I would only suggest two points. First, unbold the whole text and play with the fonts for better understanding. Second, I like the name - Write to top, even if I don't completely understand it yet-, but you could redesign the W in the logo, I know you are a purist but I would use more modern fonts. Check out fonts similar to the ones used in Netflix or modern platforms. Thanks a million for the content!! You're changing lives.

This video was very helpful for understanding these two commonly confused punctuations; however, I don't understand why in the sentence at 6:17 a comma is used before the clause 'as we are open 24/7'. As far as I know the last 2 clauses 'and they may visit...24/7' make a complex sentence in which a comma should not be used if the dependent clause 'as we are open 24/7' follows the independent clause. Can you please explain why comma has been used before 'as'. My knowledge is very limited.
