I've been interested in using a sawmill for a long time, ever since I saw Matt Cremona first use his massive homemade version. But the price of something that large is very expensive and much bigger than I would ever need.
So I decided to buy the cheapest sawmill on the market, the Harbor Freight sawmill. This would allow us to get a feel for the craft and to see if it was worth the effort of milling our own lumber.
For this video, I will show you the setup and first impressions along with milling an old log that was sitting in the woods for years. The results were surprising and we hope you enjoy the ride with us.

At first I thought he clipped a steel upright at 5:02, but that last upright is actually wood. That's actually a great idea to avoid trashing blades.

I figured the wifes first try would result in a finished table top, sanded, clear coated and done! That would have been pretty funny to have in the video!

I think that's what she eventually wants but the process of milling lumber into usable pieces takes a while for drying and completion.

I didn't know harbor freight had saw mills Thanks for showing that it works the sound of the motor after you started it didn't sound promising was it slow to cut?

@TwoFeatherChannel
@TwoFeatherChannel 2 жыл бұрын
@@SpecificLove7 I figured you didn't rev the motor after starting it because it wasn't under load We didn't get to hear the motor while it was under load, that part of the video was in fast speed mode I was just curious on, did the motor seem powerful enough or did you have to take it slow so the motor could keep up? I've bought Drill Press and Circular Saw from harbor freight and both had to be babied through a treated 2x4.

Great new toy for you definataly worth the $ especially, if you can cut some old cedar tree trunks into some beautiful looking slabs like that. Watch your dog doesn't get too close to that blade, and also you might have to sort out the ol' dust collection issue as well or just pay the kids to sweep it up. Stay Safe, Barry (ENG)

Hey Barry, thank you for the vote of confidence. I will definitely have to keep an eye out for that dog, he's definitely not the brightest tool in the shed, but he's a great watchdog. As for the dust collection, I have a very large fan that I hope to use the next time.

@richard8441 2 жыл бұрын
With the current price of lumber, you should be able to cut yourself plenty of rough cut and plane it down for use! Be interested if you think the time and money spent will be worth it, then just buying rough cut locally..? Good Luck.

With all of the trees on our property and surrounding areas, we will probably be able to save a good bit of money once I perfect the milling process. This tool is a little expensive up front but over the long run should pay for itself many times over.

We do have a bunch of future projects planned along with the ability to sell some of the wood to help recoup some of the costs. Plus in the long run it'll keep me from having to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars in lumber that I would normally pay at the big box stores.

Why bother with this, if you have to dry wood for years anyway? I'm genuinely curious, I'm new to this. Doesn't it take around a year to dry boards? Do you honestly plan to wait a year to use freshly sawed boards?
@SpecificLove7
@SpecificLove7 2 жыл бұрын
It really just depends on the type of wood and thickness you cut it, but for the most part you are correct about a year or more of wait time. That is unless you have a kiln to dry it out much faster. I have a plan to build a solar kiln in the near future to help improve that dry time. And if you build a bunch of projects like we do, a year's time can go by pretty quickly.
