It might sound like the simplest of studio backgrounds to work with but getting a black background to be 100% pure black in camera is trickier than it sounds. The same is true for the opposite color. A white background makes for great portraits but to make a 100% pure white background needs careful lighting.
Gavin Hoey steps up to the challenge of creating both background colors, starting with black. But as he explains, black fabric on its own isn’t going to guarantee you a true black background. Gavin shows how minimizing the flash-to-subject distance and controlling reflections is the secret to getting deep, dark black backdrops.
Next, Gavin uses the white wall of his small home studio as a background for portraits. Once again it’s the distance of the key light that controls the brightness of the background but as Gavin shows, if you want a true white background without shadows, you need to light the white. Adding a background light with just enough power to blow out the background but not your model's features is the aim.
To compliment both the pure black and pure white looks, Gavin uses a Flashpoint AK-R21 projector with a selection of gobos. This is attached to a Flashpoint eVOLV200 flash and creates dramatic lighting effects on his model, Chloe.

Very clear & actionable presentation. My question is how important is it to get the black and white background perfect or near perfect if we have access to good photo-editing software? With a plain background it should be relatively easy to mask the subject and brighten / darken or fully replace the background. Probably easier to hide the join if the original background in the raw image is close to the intended background.
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 8 ай бұрын
I really enjoy a bit of post processing, but the thought of having to create unique masks of fine hair on a dozen photos just to make the background black or white isn't one I'd relish. Fine for a one off but more then that, getting as right as possible in camera would be my recommendation.
@GSHemuli

Excellent video again! Question regarding the model´s hair against the white background. It is very easy to loose the detail in the hair when trying to make white background white. I saw some loss of detail already in this video. It becomes even harder if model moves slightly backward and forwards (for example when photographing kids). So the question is that is it really good to have same f-stop at the back of the model as in the front?

In my mentors old studio I use to shoot on black exclusively ..background for the dancers was a pure black. I realized a few years later it must have been that the drapes were a pure black thick velvet...when I moved I used a different set of black drapes...lesser quality velvet and the black wasnt as deep..I guess this had to do with absorbtion.

How about using a lighted scrim as a clipped white background. Meter across all the background to verify an even clipped lighting. Meter back of subject to verify background lighting is far enough back that it has not reached the subject. Finally add light to subject. The other unspoken bug-a-boo in any small studio is inverse square law. Tomorrow-tomorrow-tomorrow.
