A strip box is so much more than just a long, thin softbox. It’s effectively two light modifiers in one. Use it in one direction and it’s a small-sized softbox but rotate it 90 degrees and now it has some of the properties of a much larger softbox.
As Gavin Hoey demonstrates right from the outset, what a strip box doesn’t do is produce a thin strip of light. Instead, it has a rapid fall off of light from its smaller, thin side and once you understand how that works a stripbox can be a very creative tool indeed.
Gavin shows how he uses a horizontally rotated strip box to create portraits with soft light but also plenty of shadows. He then uses the same set-up as a beauty light, giving a long straight catchlight in the model's eyes.
Next Gavin spins the strip box to the vertical position and shows how it can be used as an edge light. Finally, Gavin pushes the limits of what a strip box can do by deliberately including it in the final image where it appears as a neat white stripe against a bright red background.

Great video as always. I bought 2 strip boxes last year and have used them a lot ... but I do think the grid is essential I often use a strip box as a low horizontal active fill with a beauty dish as the key (saves buying one of those large reflector things).

Strip light, soft box, v-flat, silk etc, its all the same thing with very subtle differences. If you know what you are doing you can make any one look like any of the others. Skill and experience will out shine 'tools' every time. The right tool makes it easier, which is not to say it can't be done "the hard way". Being a good photographer is about being adaptable and inventive. Knowing a little about physics, how light behaves with good problem solving abilities differentiates the good from the bad photographer.

Hey , i dont see anyone on youtube more likely to do a comparison review then u can do it, its a bout the continous hi powered rgb cob lights,i mean the hi powered ones,like the one from aputure 300,colbor 220, trolifo 180 and the godox 300 , aplicable in studio lighting with softboxes,direct light,used combined with flash,used with gobos and other things,it whold be a great video from a great creator

great video! ive got some Glo strip lights and they are the CATS MEOW for use. i just havent had much use for them. do you do any internships? id LOVE to get some hands on training with you. absolutely one of the best on YT in terms of content and explaining how to do things.

And if you got a couple of these strippers with a moderately powerful strobe/speedlight in them, just place them next to each other into a large softbox, so your 1:4 becomes 2:4 or 3:4. That's easier than trying to stuff more than one flash in a large box. They also work well as the bottom version in clamshell lighting.

Thanks Gavin and Sofie. A great demonstration. I have a question about these Glow strip boxes - I had bought a 1 X 3 Glow strip box a few months back, and when I attempted to use it, the wire frame inside the strip box crossed over the modeling light area too close to the modeling light socket for the incandescent modeling light bulb to fit into the bulb socket. I could only use this Glow strip box by removing the modeling light bulb, so I ended up sending the strip box back to Adorama because of this. Has this been corrected in these new Glow strip boxes, or is there now a short LED or other replacement modeling light bulb for use in my Godox SK300 and 400 strobes? I would still like to have a 1 X 3' strip box with Bowens mount, but I'm not finding one available, other than the Glow.

I can't help shed any light on a replacement bulb Charley (see what I did there 😉) but Glow do two other 1x3 Stripboxes which would work in your case. If speed of set-up is your goal then the Glow ParaSnap 12x36" www.adorama.com/glsbps1236.html is what you want. If time isn't an issue but price is then the Glow Series III www.adorama.com/fpsb12363.html is a timeless classic.
