If you are a 20th cousin of someone that means you share a relative 20 generations back. The amount of people that share the same relative would be astronomical.

Do the math. Ten to the thirteenth power is more than 17,000, and that's just the direct lineage, not counting in-laws and other indirect lineage. With each generation you go back, the number doubles, even as the pool of potential ancestors comes from a geometrically smaller population. Every person of European descent is related to most (or all) other people of European descent. Some years ago, I met and became friends with a certain woman; and after discussing common acquaintances, we realized that we were close relatives from three or four directions. I didn't marry her.
