Thanks for watching! The Padres made the playoffs for the first time in a long time, back in 2020. They lost many pieces this offseason, such as Blake Snell, Yu Darvish and more. But this offseason, against all odds, AJ Preller built the ultimate rotation.

Just to confirm: By “Ultimate”, I don’t mean the best rotation. It is absolutely ultimate that the Padres were able to build such a good rotation, regardless of the incredible owner passing away. Regardless of losing 3 pitchers that had a 3 ERA or better. Thats ultimate if you ask me.

As a padre fan, it was hard to see us have such a great batting line up just for it to not produce. It was especially frustrating to see the tables turn when the bats finally woke up but the lights-out pitching from the beginning of the season was no longer there. The padres were a huge mess last year, but I have hope that the team has had time to marinate and put up a good fight this year, especially now that we have such a great pitching rotation. Thanks for the great analysis!

They all were struggling when they came to the padres. Ruben Niebla changed the way padres see pitching. Wacha and Lugo had huge red flags coming to the padres and Niebla maximized their talents

Padres have lost so much talent and depth, I don’t know how they finish better than last year’s team. Cy young, Elite closer, Elite bat. They’ve done a solid job replacing these assets, but their ceiling definitely isn’t as high as the last couple of years.

On the pitching side, I agree their not better. Tough to get better than what they already had. But, owner died, they lost 3 pitchers that had 3 eras or better.. yet somehow still have an awesome rotation. That to me is ultimate. The offense is really what worries me. The reason the Padres were so bad, is because of their situational baseball. Ranking 30th in “High Leverage” situations offensively. Ranking 25th with RISP. Ranking 30th, in “Late & Close” games. I love that they were able to keep such a good rotation. But man oh man idk how to feel for them offensively

The best part of this deal is the $8M price tag for cease… it keeps team well below luxury tax to allow for other moves

The worst part of the deal is that the Padres lost 2 critical players that probably were essential for success this year... Setup man Steven Wilson and projected starter Drew Thorpe to become the sixth starter later in the season as likely injuries and non-performance occurs. Morejon is and maybe Kopek are being counted on to replace Wilson and so far that hasn't been too reliable. Probably someone we don't know today will have to step up and become a sixth starter during the year. It might be Brito or Vazquez. Or maybe someone from the minors. Big question marks.

To be fair, that was last year, Cease has had Elite numbers as recently as 2022 so it remains to be seen if last year is the norm or just a blip.

Peter Siedler put out a great team every year with preller’s help. It’s not his fault that they were the worst clutch time team in the league and underperformed. What more is preller supposed to do he puts good rosters and they underperform compared to their career averages. What do you want to be done

@@toogud7918 Preller has been on the job nearly a decade. How about not hire a rookie manager in Andy Green? How about not hiring his best friend Jayce Tingler? How about not meddling and clashing with Bob Melvin? How about not fostering a toxic environment and having a poor analytics department (according to players that played here and left)? Three winning seasons (one in the covid year), and two playoff appearances in 9 years is terrible. He only had a job because he was close with Mr. Siedler (who considered his terrible results excellence).

The ultimate rotation? It even better than last years. It’s not even the best in league. I give that nod to a healthy braves team, although I really like Seattle’s. I wouldn’t even say it’s better than diamondbacks….certainly not better than the talented arms the dodgers have. That’s just teams this year. No way it’s on par with the braves of the early 90s or the early 2000s As or Ect Ect.

By “Ultimate”, let me clarify. I’m not speaking in the terms of, this rotation is unstoppable or anything like that. Ultimate is more so used to highlight how good the rotation is, with the circumstances being rough. Like, losing Snell, Wacha, and Lugo to free agency. The owner passing away. Yet, they were able to revamp the rotation.. and make it good again.

If anyone signs Snell on a short term deal is the Padres. No one else is willing to sign a high $$ short term and give up draft compensations but the Padres won't need to do that.

Dylan Cease is solid but not elite by any means. You could even make an argument that the Padres gave up too much for a guy that may give you 3.8 to 4 ERA this season.

I really wish I could root for the Padres. But they have Machado, the guy who ended Pedroia's career with a now illegal slide (but back then it wasn't). Other than him, I'd like to see them win because they haven't and the rest of the team seem like good people. He's the only player in MLB I truly despise (and maybe Rendon).

I've been a padre fan since the 80s, and once again, fans are jumping the gun about this team. Padres built a roster in 2022 - lost Padres built a roster in 2023 - didn't even make the wildcard Padres build a rotation in 2024 - unproven since the season hasn't started and 2 starters are coming off injuries Padres made the mickey Mouse postseason in 2020. Just like how LA won the mickey mouse world series.

Last year's Padres proved one thing - you can have all the talent in the world, but if you can't Win games when it matters most, then you'll just keep losing. Last year was a aberration of continually losing Extra Inning games after the year before in 2022 winning those same games by sending up a Backup Catcher to the plate in big situations and him delivering. Seriously, Jorge Alfaro leaving in 2023 was the Padres biggest roster loss - and it showed itself in the Win-Loss record. They replaced Snell with Cease. They "built" the Ultimate rotation by downgrading at starters spot. I fell for the title and that's why its there.

As I said in the pinned comment, it’s how they built this rotation that makes it ultimate. They had everything going against them from losing Snell, Lugo, and Wacha. The owner passes away. Yet they were still able to retool, and stay competitive in the rotation. Thats ultimate to me.

Agreed. I’m not worried about the pitching at all. Whether its a downgrade or not from last year, the pitching is gonna be good. The offense on the other hand, is just so rough… ranked last in almost every situational baseball stat last year

No, this is nowhere close to an elite rotation although it has the POTENTIAL to be very good but only with a considerable amount of luck. The biggest problem is it lacks durability. Not a single pitcher pitched close to the entire season last year due mostly to injury. Darvish missed the entire last couple months of 2023 due to an ekbow injury. Musgrove missed neatly the entire season due to dropping a kettleball on his toe in training camp but in any case he hasn't pitched well for a couple years since his no-hitter. Snell is gone in free agency. Lugo and Wacha are also gone in free agency. Waldron was a late call up last year who has pitched sort of Ok as he learns to pitch at the big league level. Newly acquired Michael King in the Soto trade pitched only 9 starts last year, has flashes of talent but is learning to pitch as a starter and doesn't appear to have developed that extra gear to get out of trouble that veterans develop. To get this rotation, Preller traded away a lot if pitching depth. Lugo and Wacha are gone, replaced in the rotation by only King. Steven Wilson is gone from the bullpen in the Cease trade. It's early to know if Morejon can replace Wilson's bullpen role and there is no answer to the lack of a sixth starter yet especially since it's unlikely the current rotation can pitch all year. Already Darvish has spent time on the ILbut that and more from others should be expected. Bottom line is this pitching staff is very, very thin and someone like Vazquez, Brito or someone from the minors will probably have to step up to join the rotation at some time during the year like how Waldron did last year. It's a big ask for some player to deliver a lot more than what they've shown so far but it has to happen unless the Padres experience extraordinary luck.

I’d argue King has been better than mid. But yeah their pitching struggles is pretty crazy actually. Musgrove has sucked, Yu’s injured, Waldron’s been okay. Ranked 15th in ERA among all teams in pitching.
