(US Army) In WW1 those wounded or gassed were authorized to wear a chevron on the lower left sleeve of the uniform coat. It was a PFC stripe so no special medallion or ribbon was created or produced. What's confusing is the PFC stripe was used in the same location to note overseas service. To date I haven't found any memos or directives covering the use and positioning of either award. I'm not sure if there was a difference in how the stripe was mounted, for example...stripe pointed down vs pointed up. A great uncle was in WW1 and his jacket had the stripe but we didn't know of his jacket until after he died.

I was going to bring up the same point, but you guys beat me too it. Had to do a report on that pussy and the more I found out the more I have disdain for a coward like him. When I was training cadets at west point one of the females though she was going to be funny and say she wanted to be just like him. Long story short, by the time I was done she was in tears and few others, that thought her comment was funny, wouldn't even look me in the eye. If it was my call he would be stripped of all awards and rank. Although you see more and more officers claiming injury to get a purple heart. It's so bad I've seen a lieutenant get one for bumping his hand on a Humvee and claim it was a snipers ricochet. Yet fighting men with chronic injuries, due to their injuries, received nothing. A great friend of mine got one when he served in Korea. It was 16 years after I got to know him that he finally told us that he had been awarded the medal. The next year my JROTC unit (130ish people) thanked him for his service, brought tears to his eyes. He was a great man and I miss him to this day.

Military History is ignored in most educational systems. They only look at the general or encompassing point. So no its not that they know more, its the base of more is not taught

Nothing conveys just how horrified everyone was at the grim prospect of Downfall as that does. The sheer scale of what they expected to lose hits hard. Then you find out just how much more prepared the home islands of Japan were, how far they intended and expected to fight compared to the estimates. We know most of the preparations because of how sudden the end was, and the realistic projection that they would have needed to make more Purple Hearts? That chills the soul.

Probbablly an MP40. Either a soviet supplied one too the northern forces and later captured or a former French or CIA weapon.

Milleniumsword, you might be right( I do not know enough about the weapons used during the vietnam war to say that you’re wrong. However what I do know is that for a short period swedish companies exported a lot of m/45s to the us armed forces. Which from the right angle can actually look pretty similar to an mp40.

Members of the NVA and VC were well known for using weapons from all over the world (they used what ever they could get their hands on) and there were many case of US soldiers picking up such weapons either as keepsakes or as a extra backup weapon. Still not sure how my grandfather got a WW1 Imperial German Luger P-08 but he got it while he was there.

You can now apply for one posthumously at the Ministry of Defense. Jon Blumming the Dutch Judo expert and Korea veteran, despite being from the Dutch army, also received the purple heart. Actor and singer Rijk de Gooijer (Dutch) received the medal for his wound he sustained near Nijmegen in 1944 and joined the allied forces.

They're apolitical. Respect given to all brave soldiers and heroes on all sides. It's a tough line to walk, but they do it.

The full 'WWII stockpile' ran out in 2000, the US had build up nearly a 1,5 million reserve of the decoration for us through the entire conflict. The high number of expected casualties for the invasion of Japan itself, particularly after the much tougher than anticipated battle for the Pacific, is one of the reason the US decided to go with an atomic attack. Though there were more than half a million Purple Hearts left after the second World War, the number 'allocated' to Japan is quite significant as that number is essentially the total number of US casualties from the conflicts that followed in Korea, Vietnam, both Gulf Wars, and Afghanistan combined. Such loss of life, in quite a few cases over utter pointless and at times fully illegal conflicts. Tragic!

@@kstreet7438 It's a fascinating, if not somewhat chilling, event to think about. Naturally we're going into 'what if' on a lot of this stuff, very difficult for example to estimate how high the number of Japanese casualties could have been in the case of a protracted land war (or on the conscripted peoples of the region like the Seediq who were thrown at the Americans in places the Japanese thought were too hard to fight over and who had already suffered years to decades of cultural genocide at the hands of their imperial overlords). That said a lot of historians don't actually think the nuclear attacks on Nagasaki and Hiroshima themselves were what eventually pushed imperial Japan to surrender. Naturally it was another big drop in a quickly filling bucket, but even on the US' side of the conflict it wasn't the biggest or highest casualty attack on a civilian target during the battle for the Pacific. Tokyo, which along with nearly 70 other cities, was hit with conventional bombing and had a higher civilian casualty number. All of which did very little to sway the desperate last stand approach of a large segment of the Japanese army. The final and vital drop in the bucket is generally seen as the Sovjet Union's declaration of war on Japan. With that juggernaut, finally, focusing its attention on the empire of the rising sun their forays into the region in the hopes of expansion (as well as a desperate need for resources like oil and rubber in part driven by US trade blockades earlier in the war) would have become impossible. In the words of deputy chief of staff Torashiro Kawabe "The absolute maintenance of peace in our relations with the Soviet Union is one of the fundamental conditions for continuing the war." Then there's always the theoretical 'what if' scenario what would have happened should the US have delayed the nuclear attacks for a couple of days (for, I don't know, a technical problem lets say)? There's only three days between the bombs and Sovjet Union joining the conflict, while six days later Japan unconditional surrendered. Could this all have been avoided by a week's long delay, would we look at nuclear power and weapons differently if they hadn't been deployed on civilian targets in WWII. Food for thought!

The nukes were argued to be unnecessary by the commanders in the Pacific theatre and it isn't hard to see why. Japan's war council had met to discuss surrender before the first bomb was dropped. The Soviet invasion of Manchuria had shaken their faith in the Imperial Japanese Army's ability to fend off Downfall. The only reason the bombs were dropped is because Truman was intent on unconditional surrender. Acceding to the one condition the Imperial war council had(the safety and continued rule of the emperor) would have saved all of the lives lost in the atomic bombings as well as the projected casualties for Downfall.

This. PTSD can be very cruel. IN World War 1, it sometimes led to soldiers being treated as cowards, and shot. However, people with PTSD are in urgent need of medical treatment, and care. They should be eligible for the Purple Heart.

And technically, you can treat an amputee. Their logic is flawed at best, and the heart ought to be awarded for wounds of the mind as well.

I think one of the issues is because an physical wound can be easily documented, ie "PVT Smith was wounded on 5APR05 outside of Kabal" while a singular even may or may not cause PTSD or it might take several years before a Veteran may even know they have PTSD and is effected by it, or even at all. Like all military awards, and especially ones that grant you special benefits documentation is a very important thing and going back and documenting events that aren't that clear cut is a very hard thing to do.
