First impressions of the new Split-Fire 3465 20-22 ton 2-way log splitter with 4-way splitting wedge. This machine has less than an hour on it, and we are testing it out with some PA hardwoods - black Cherry and hard Maple. Splitting firewood with a 4-way wedge is a new experience for us! At 1/2 throttle (break-in period) it's not that fast with the cycle time. But splitting 4 pieces per pass certainly keeps me busy!
We also use the Ford Workmaster tractor with the BigToolRack on the back.

Wish I could get one here in the uk.. the European distributor is way more expensive than the base Canadian dollar price it just makes it unviable… real shame… looks great Chad… looking forward to seeing it blasting through big rounds in future..

Honda engines running-in: run-in occurs at an acceptable rate if the engine is operated at slightly less than top no-load speed with or without a moderate load. Combustion pressures at this speed are sufficiently high to cause piston rings to conform to the cylinder wall.

This would be one time I cannot agree with the Split Fire. JMO You depend on wood to mostly heat your home. For the average person that supplements wood for heating, it would take a lot of wood that we/they would have to buy or maybe get from our /their current property. The ROI would be substantial for people that do not have acres of woods to harvest. I have a wood process area where I put my wheels on a couple 2x8's to raise the height of my splitter for the back issues. Pricing out the unit you have is around 5500 to 6000. You have the trees to make this affordable, as for others, the cost is way too much. Once again, jmo. Love your videos, love the content, and always look forward to the next one.

You're right that it's definitely a different situation for people who have access to "free" firewood compared to paying $1000 for a tri-axle load of firewood logs. I'd still spend the money on a Split-Fire 2265 (less than $3500) though if I were thinking about a box store splitter. The log lift is priceless and the Honda engine is worth the extra money in my opinion. PS - I like the idea of a dedicated splitting area and blocking up the splitter to the necessary height! That's genius!!!

@@davesauerzopf6980 Our original Split-Fire (not the new one) is the Split-Fire 2265. Base price is $2650 right now. Adding the log lift and Honda engine makes it $3420. It's more money than a box store splitter, but quite a bit better in my opinion. split-fire.com/us/log-splitter-2265-us/

Great video. I am on the fence about the 4 way wedge. Do you find yourself using the double wedge or 4 way the most. I'm thinking the 2 way would be more to get a little smaller pieces. The 2265 is 28 inch deck height. Do you find a big improvement going to 32" deck height? Trying to decide as I am 6'2" and my current splitter bothers my back as it's too low. Thanks for all the great videos.

Thanks for watching the videos and asking these questions. So far, I’ve used the 2-way wedge more often than the 4-way wedge. It could be because I’m used to the 2-way wedge from the 2265, and I’m really efficient at splitting that way, with the two-direction splitting. And because, like you mentioned, I can exact the split the size I want. As far as the deck height - that’s a huge improvement for me and was worth every penny. I notice a big difference - and I’m 5’8”. It puts it at a much more comfortable working height. You can’t go wrong with either the 3465 or the 2265. People keep asking me if I’m going to sell the 2265 now that I have the 3465. I honestly don’t think so. Because I really like both!

@@PurpleCollarLife Thanks for taking time to reply. I am still debating between the 3265 & 3465 models. I do like the taller knife on the 3265. I'm not sure how much I'd use the 4 way, trying to decide. :) Keep the videos coming!

Why you need 2 splitfires? You only ever split cherry & oak... Don't turn into the Wranglerstar of PA
@PurpleCollarLife

I wanted the higher bed height (less strain on the back) and to be able to use the 4-way wedge. I might not mind becoming the Wranglerstar of PA. :)

@@PurpleCollarLife It is not working for you. They should have told you that it makes large splits. If they put the wings lower down, then it would make smaller splits. X I have an idea how you can get the machine that you want. Cut off two or three inches from the bottom of one of your four-way wedges. Cut the top off so it will slide down lower on the post. Put that cut off strip on top put the lid on and weld everything. If it needs a pin, you could put a hole in it. I really don't know what good a pin does. Maybe if your head were above it and it blasted off then that would be the end. Before you modify your old one you could ask how much it would cost for them to do a custom-biild for you. I just thought of a question. What keeps the pin from falling out when the splitter is moving down the road?

Poor design. The flat should push the wood through the knife. Makes the split separate much faster.
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 9 ай бұрын
I'm going to have to disagree on that one. I've used both types. I prefer the knife moving through the wood and pushing against an engineered angle stop. The advantage here is that it lets the wood open without putting unnecessary force back into the knife from a flat stop or a flat plate on the ram (requiring more tonnage hydraulic pressure to split wood). It's genius engineering actually.
@Frontireadventures

@PurpleCollarLife I've used just about every type of wood splitter out there. Having operated a firewood yard for over 20 years...with annual sales of over 400 cord. By far..by far my favorite was a local model manufactured. Great working height. Auto return on the ram..tray that moved with the cylinder allowing you to grab one of the splits and position it at the knife with a quick shove to keep it in place, then engage the hammer end of the cylinder.. two men could produce 6 cord per day quite easy. That usless gull wing is just a fancy gimmick on a way overpriced splitter. Two stage pumps have no effort in splitting either way but the wood being rammed against a stationary knife separates the wood much quicker..just 20 years experience and my preference.
@jakebredthauer5100
@jakebredthauer5100 6 ай бұрын
@@Frontireadventures From an engineering perspective, it does not matter if the wood is moving or not. There is no difference in splitting effectiveness. There are obvious advantages to having the wood get pushed out of the way.
