We're testing out a new format for this video, using diagrams to demonstrate a really cool and simple wiring mod which allows you to use two different capacitors on your tone control by using a push pull pot.
When in the down position, the push pull sees one capacitor and when engaged in the up position, it see's another. To make the most of this mod, it's best to choose two capacitors at different sides of the spectrum, so for example, a 0.022uF and a 0.1uF would work nicely. This setup is a perfect addition to a Telecaster.
Let me know if you like the new format? Step by step guitar wiring tutorials will always be the mainstay of this channel but it's nice to sit back away from the soldering iron and explain the theory a bit more.
Components required:
1 push pull pot of choice
2 different capacitors of choice

I liked the new format! This makes the wiring really clear and easy to see. Sometimes when you’re filming the actual wiring process, it can be a little harder to follow. This makes it a lot easier! Honestly though I’m happy with the content either way. Keep it up!

I do like this format (it makes it very clear and easy to follow), but I especially love watching and following along with the actual wiring process.... Perhaps there’s some sort of happy medium or a marriage between the two? I don’t know, just my personal opinion 🤷🏻‍♀️ Honestly though, no matter the format, your videos are some of my absolute favorites. You’re the only KZfaq channel that I have notifications turned on for 😊

Yes, I like the new format, it's very informative. if you correspond it to an actual soldering demo it would be perfect. Where as the graphic demo shows us a map the soldering demo shows us the technical application. ✌️👍😁

This is exactly what I was looking for in my telecaster. 4 way switch for 4 way wiring, with split coil on volume, and using push pull on tone to allow for tone bleed or reg cap. If you are not using humbuckers, you could eliminate the 4 way switch and assign it to a push pull pot.

Great video! You should expand on this and show how to hook up a coil split humbucker and a 2.2 resistors for a partial split. This would be the ultimate coil split mod. You could have a .022 cap when the switch is down for the full hum bucker and a when the switch is up have a .1 cap with a 2.2 resistor for a partial single coil tone. This would be great for an HH tele.

Hi, thanks. Yes that's an interesting idea I would have to think about where the 470k resistor would go because if you soldered it to the push pull to ground (as you would normally) it would just gorund the coil split wires. I'll look into it.

Where do the humbuckers get soldered to? I have 2 EVH Wolfgang 4 conductor wire plus ground, I a a cts pot for tone and a EVH 500k volume knob with 3 way toggle. I want to be able to split either pickup depending on which position the toggle is in. For down position I have a 0.022uf capacitor, I was thinking of putting a 0.015uf when the pot is pulled to brighten up to a more strat sound. I know the evh pickups normal wiring and I know I will have to use the other 2 wires to the cts pot instead of leaving them soldered together and shrink wrapped.

Is it possible to use a dpdt on off on switch to by pass the capacitors before they reach the volume pot. Basically meaning I could have a push pull pot with two different treble bleeds but also have the ability to bypass them. Any info would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for sharing, i said earlier i like the way the diagram was displayed, i have a question if youd be willing to have a go, im foing a strat SSS build and want to do a quarter blend with no load pot on bottom pot a dpdt push pull in middle pot with two capacitor values and possibly a 500k dpdt pot for a brighter touch and volume and all pots logarithmic but not sure if i should use all 500k pots they're tineider alnico II blues single coils in neck 6.1k and middle 6.2k and an alnico V bridge at 7.1k, using a 2 pole 5 way superswitch but a 3 way 1/4 blend so i can blend more than just bridge and neck. No humbucker so cant see there being any issue with coil splitting with different value pots and no resistors to counter that, just SSS with more tone options. Far as i know the difference between a 250 and 500k pot is the resistance to ground- how much top end is being cut short and my idea is to utilise the 500k with very different valued capacitors to filter and let off thd low frequencies to ground at the same time. The diagram im thinking about using has 10 (+2 common) connections 1 through to 10 1+2+3 linked together and 2 linked to no-load pot outer lug and 1 to neck pup Middle pup to 4 then linked to 7 5 linked to no-load middle lug (sweeper) 6- bare 8+9+10 linked and bridge linked to 10 Heres my dilemma- master tone middle lug to left volume lug the to top commom common linked to bottom common (to orientate, birdseye view- left is side closest to superswitch) Right volume bent back to volume pot casing and soldered Middle volume- output jack hot Volume top casing as pup/jack and spring claw grounding points as normally done. Usually the master tone right lug would be used to connect one cap to the master volume casing and that eould be that. Introduction of a dpdt either 250 or 500k pot im not sure ive not tried the pickups they've been delay due to bank holiday, however i do understand its fine to use 500k or even 300k pots to gain dome more brightness but i dont want it clangly so the use of .1uf and .47uf im not sure im up for giving it a go i can always change the pots to 250k, the whole reason for this experiment is to find something unique and great at the same time. Not sure if i can mix the resistance values of individual pots so the master tone has more high end then having 250k no load and 250k volume id assume the volume would have to be 500k too to allow the higher frequencies from the master tone through but the blend pot is essentially mixing the pickups in whatever position so id also assume that would have to match the master tone pot value t0 500k if i use 500k because all pickups coonect to the left lug of the blender pot then pass through the master tone pot middle lug sweeper and up throgh the right lug to the capacitor/s depending on a standard pot or dpdt- am i right in this assumption the only difference is the pull up of the dpdt to connect the secondary capacitor and all pots shold be of the same resistance value? I would very much appreciate your thoughts on this i still need to buy the components and ive bought from six string supplies before and found your stuff to be high quality and the pots values matched too! Regards Mike.

Would this schematic be the same for wiring in capacitors for two hum buckers with the CTS push/pull pot installed? I have a PRS with Bareknuckle Nailbomb pickups installed, and I replaced the tone pot with a 500k CTS push/pull pot to split the coils, but I want to add to beef it up a little bit more. Will this process work? And is it overkill, or am I on the right path? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Could you ignore C2/3/4 and only connect volume to C1, cap 1 to 2, and cap 2 to 1 only. Looks like it would have the same effect, but is there a benefit to using both sets of contacts?
@SixStringSupplies
@SixStringSupplies 4 жыл бұрын
No, because you'd need to connect the main pot to the DPDT above, so volume needs to come into to the output lug (middle).
@MrCarthus
@MrCarthus 4 жыл бұрын
@@SixStringSupplies sorry, what I mean to say is c2/3/4 are not needed, but yeah volume to middle lug, then from the right lug up to C1. Cap 1 on terminal 2 and ground, and cap 2 on terminal 1 and ground. You would not need to parallel with c2/3/4 as their doing the same thing as c1/2/3 anyway. Seems like extra soldering steps linking them through, that are not needed.

Hi, sorry for not getting back to you soon on this. So I actually tried your method today. It works, sort of. But it only rolls off about half of the highs. When you dial down the tone control all the way down, it feels like there should be a lot more to roll off, but doesn't. Like it is still stuck at "5" on the tone control if you know what I mean. So I'd argue your method is certainly easier and less hassle to solder, but not as effective. Using both sides of the switch rolls off more highs. Certainly noticeable. But I quite enjoyed the half roll off, so will leave it like that in my Tele until the next wiring mod goes in. Thanks for bringing it up...the beauty of guitar wiring is that there are so many possibilities and wiring options that I'm learning every day.

@@SixStringSupplies This cannot be correct with respect, whether one pole connects the cap to chassis or two (double as you have) makes absolutely no difference, it's like saying two short circuits are better than one lol ;)
