There is a push to preserve a piece of railroad history in Mill Valley. John Ramos tells us about train that carried tourists from Mill Valley to scenic Mt. Tamalpais, decades ago.

Most of the former railroad right-of-way is indeed a hiking trail now, including the branch line down to Muir Woods. Other sections closer to Mill Valley itself are public roads now and can be driven with your average car. I've personally hiked most of it and managed to identify several specific locations from vintage photographs along the way.

I think that’s great that Fred Runner, who wrote the Mt. Tamalpais Scenic Railway book, published by Arcadia headed up the group who purchased #9 and are looking to restore it.

The Gravity Railroad route still remains to this day albeit dramatically overgrown with natural foliage and not very obvious in many areas, small rockfalls throughout the route are common. . Great place for hiking but one must use caution during rattlesnake season.
