I've always wanted to build my own crank jig because they are so expensive, and if you have the jig (and a press, but those are cheap and useful elsewhere) and some v-blocks and a dial indicator, then it seems like a simple job. I have a Pro-X crank in my YZ, as well as clutch basket, piston, and bearings. But I've used Wiseco cranks in other bikes.

Another good trick that I'm sure you are aware of, but if you put your bearings in the freezer overnight and then heat up your cases/whatever is going to accept the bearings, they will drop right in. No pressing or beating necessary. I'm sure you know this though.

They did. They handled it very well. It was an interesting situation because the ProX basket was provided under sponsorship, but they were out of stock of Wiseco baskets so I did purchase the new one. Had Wiseco been able to provide a basket under sponsorship I'd have liked to not have to take the machine shop's money, but that's how it ended up working out. They didn't really give me a lot of details on why they couldn't get it straight, but essentially they called me and said "hey, we screwed up, we owe you a basket." Apparently they don't offer that sort of work, and the guy who agreed to do it shouldn't have. But very pleased with how they handled it and I feel bad that it had to cost them money.

Hey, Kincade! Motor looks great. I would advise against using a Wiseco Crankshaft. They are poorly made. They are not made in the USA like the Pistons. I am surprised Wiseco puts their name on them. I believe they are made in China with subpar materials and are often not true. I would get an OEM crank, or have your factory one rebuilt by a skilled machine shop with a PROX Rod. I offer Crank rebuilding services as part of my small business and rebuild a lot of them. PROX, and VESRAH rods are made in Japan. HotRods connecting rods are made in the USA and are great. HotRods complete crankshafts are made in Taiwan and are just okay. For OEM Quality go with a YAMAHA Crank, or have your stock crank rebuilt and trued with a PROX or VESRAH Rod. Especially since you are going with a 300BB and have spent a lot of time and care to make such a nice motor. Excited to see the outcome. -Beau

Hey Beau, I appreciate the comment. It seems this is still the widely accepted reputation of Wiseco cranks based on comments on this video. I'm curious if this is a result of previous failures that tarnished their reputation, or if you have reasonable evidence to believe they are to this day still no good. Talking to Kevin at Wiseco who I've been working with for some time, he truly believes Wiseco is now developing a quality crankshaft and admits that they weren't always. All this said, I'm not claiming to be incredibly well versed in the matter and don't have enough builds under my belt to prove or disprove this. The engine is bolted up and in the frame, and I hope this crankshaft lives a long happy life cycling this piston up and down. I am certainly not just ignoring these comments, and would love to get to the bottom of whether people are still experiencing Wiseco crank failures or not. All of the forums I seem to find discussing failures are from many years ago.
@BeauA.
@BeauA. Жыл бұрын
@@KincadePavich Thank you for the reply. Curious, did you see if the Rod had any origin marked on it? I see on Wiseco's article a "Made in Japan" on the rod. But I kind of question whether those were R&D cranks or not. I havent seen a Wiseco crank with a Japanese Rod. As far as evidence I don't have photos or things of that nature, but I can tell you I have physically replaced 3 Wiseco crankshafts in the past year that have failed prematurely. The big end bearing wears out quickly best case. Worst case is the rod breaks and wipes out the entire motor. Not to mention some runout issues from the factory. Obviously I do not know the entire history or age of the Crankshafts I replaced since I was not the one to build the motor before they came to my shop. I do know that most of the time if there is a bad crank found when I am rebuilding a top end, it is almost always a Wiseco. They sure do look nice. But the quality of materials and manufacturing in China just isn't as good as the other options. The way I look at it is why use a Chinese crankshaft when there are Japanese options available for similar money? If you get a rod kit and have your factory crank rebuilt to OEM specs you will likely save a good chunk of change too. I know you already have the motor built, and I am not suggesting you pull that one apart. I also wouldn't lose sleep over a Wiseco crank being inside that motor. I only commented because it seemed like you were still in the process of making a decision on which crank to go with and figured I would offer my recommendation. I am excited to see the final product. The bike is going to be really cool.

Such a nice bike to be trashed by a wiseco crank. Do your research they are garbage they’re never in true and most of the times the position for the timing is off. I would highly recommend using a factory crank before you grenade the engine 😢 I refuse to install their cranks at my shop. However i do recommend their forged pistons
