After a 9 month break from the trail, I head back to finish off the final 700 miles of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. I'm immediately hit by a snow storm, which makes things very interesting as I struggle through 4 foot snow drifts on Cumbres Pass.
I designed the bike that I'm riding, the Priority 600x with Pinion and Gates drivetrain www.prioritybi...

Hello my friends!! This one has a little bit of everything, road magic, beautiful landscapes, and brutal conditions. What’s the toughest moment that you’ve faced on a bike?

Toughest moment was probably March of 2016. Riding the C&O Canal tow path near Harper's Ferry. 38 and sunny at the beginning of the ride. 32 and slushy rain at the end. I've never been that close to hypothermia, but I was keenly aware of what was happening to my body as I was failing. I had long since stopped shivering, and could feel the trail closing in around me. Made it back to my car, but couldn't use my hands to get my keys out of my pack, and I just started laughing at the absurdity of it all...

Climbing up the highway 40 mountain pass in PA starting near Uniontown (on my way from Ohio to DC) on a fully loaded touring bike. This pass climbs about 1,300 feet in less than 4 miles. We started it on an early sunny afternoon with temps at about 90. If I hadn’t scarfed down a few slices of leftover pizza that morning I would have bonked hard.

Climbing out of the Columbia Gorge in Washington State into a 35 mile and hour headwind. I averaged 3mph. It took me 6 hours to go 18 miles. 5 hours in my calf cramped and I fell into the ditch on the side of the road underneath electric windmills; I just laid there and laughed.

Hi Ryan. Those were my parents that you stayed with in Horca (you stayed in my usual room with the soft bed and the creepy dolls lol). Just know that we haven’t stopped talking about your stay-over with them (via text and links lol). One of the reasons they went up there (we actually live in the Albuquerque area), was to get away from the pandemic, especially since my dad is pretty vulnerable. And even though they got vaccinated a couple months ago, they’ve continued to stay in their little slice of paradise for the time-being. Which is awesome, except for the fact that boredom and loneliness can set in at times (they have some wonderful neighbors and church friends, but very few of them stay/stayed year-round). You truly brought some joy into their lives, and though *them*, into my own (and my sister’s, and my girlfriend’s, and my kids’, etc etc lol). I am so unbelievably happy that your journey is now inextricably linked with my family’s. Be blessed, be safe, and keep shining that light brother ❤️

I was on day 2 of the MS150 and my knees where killing me despite my training for this event. On the Cape Cod Rail Trail, two young boys pulled up along side me. One was the definite talker while his friend was quiet and listened. He asked what was going on with all the bikers, I shared the ride story and I think we road together for almost 10 miles. they took my mind off my knees and 12 years later that wonderful memory is clear as day. I grew up right in that area. I've been in Asia the past few decades and seeing you ride past houses and signs and bluffs and bends in the Conejos River that I recognize by sight even now is sure a nostalgic experience for me. I logged/hunted/fished/hiked in those mountains until was old enough to leave and I've been back as often as I could since then. I know how quickly those mountains can turn from a scenic jaunt into a deadly ball-buster. I've left a fair amount of my own blood in those hills and an ungodly amount of sweat as well. Good on you for keeping your wits and sticking to it. Thanks for sharing the adventure. *sniffing a nostalgic tear....

@@duzer I do love trail magic as well. I have been blessed on a lot of my Backpacking trips to get snacks or shelter.

Your friends at Green Guru weren't interested in selling me a bolt on frame bag like yours. I would think that they now have the pattern and would like to sell as many as they could. To all you 600X owners out there, we need to persuade GG to make this bolt on frame available. I even mentioned your name, Ryan. Maybe you could put in a good word for Priority 600X owners? Thanks for sharing.

I’m sorry, I’ll see what I can do, but they don’t do custom jobs, it’s just not worth it to them, and there’s not enough 600x owners out there currently to make it a viable business decision.

Awesome to see you back on the Divide! The 4K footage looks amazing. Can't believe the amount of snow on NM in May! Unbelievable the amount of hospitality the Red Bear couple gave you too, just Awesome. Looking to pt2!

I can relate to this challenge....sometimes it is hard to know whether you should go forward or back but staying in one spot is not an option. Your positive attitude will get you through this...lol

Thought about you last week, Ryan. 251 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Just about perfect conditions for a ride. And I was blessed with some trail magic along the way!

Just finished my first Bikepacking adventure. 12C and pouring rain the first three days. I had a blast. I also packed tortillas and ate frijoles in Ryan’s honor. I did forget to sing the song.
