@@swfcocs1 yeah, Kurt loved the Pixies. he even said that he wanted to do music like them. And he did it: that's so obvious! Dave Grohl used to snubbed Nirvana songs, saying that "This is so Pixies". Even before I knew about these statements, when I heard Nirvana first songs, I always thought they were inspired by The Pixies, and take it to another level, specially those screams by Kurt, that Franck Black only did ocasionally in his songs. I used to say that The Pixies were pre-grunge.

I believe it, but they were so underappreciated for so long...for decades after the masterpieces that were Surfer Rosa and Doolittle they were still considered a small alt-rock band. Only when they reunited for Coachella in 2004 did they realize a whole new generation had discovered them.

@@saintsataniko2116 Right. Well, I didn't get into them until Tromp Le Monde came out, then they broke up shortly after. I thought they'd be as big as Nirvana to future gens, but since they returned and don't have the same magic, kind of sunk their cred a bit...idk, imo.

As an example of how influential Pixies were to Cobain, he was once quoted, in a good way, saying "I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies" with regards to the making of Smells like Teen Spirit. Also, both David Bowie and Bono were featured in the Pixies documentary "Gouge" giving them extremely high praise. Thomas Yorke, of Radiohead, also said "When I was at college, it was The Pixies and REM that changed my life".

Kurt Cobain said he was just trying to write Pixies songs when he was writing Nirvana songs. I've always loved the harmonies between Charles (lead singer) & Kim (bass player singing the oooo ooos). This song was also the perfect song used for the ending of Fight Club a movie that you should definitely react to although it is a bit brutal :). I could go on for hours recommending songs but I'll just list some of their top songs, "Velouria", "Vamos", "I've Been Tired", "In Heaven" (Kim's version), "Tame", "Here Comes Your Man", "Monkey Gone To Heaven", "Gigantic" (Kim's version), "Wave of Mutilation" (UK Surf) & "La La Love You" since its sung by David Lovering (Drummer). Also some of their most recent songs e.g. "Greens & Blues" & "Indie Cindie".

This is one of their all-time BEST, definitely. You should also definitely check Monkey's Gone to Heaven and Debaser, those are both similar total BANGERS ...

Legends of Indie music. I miss bands like this. Who were allowed to experiment and produce such a unique sound. This song was used in the movie Fight Club.

This was the band that made me throw a band together in 1990. Nirvana in a sense before Nirvana. Songs to check out: Debaser, Wave of Mutilation (either version… it’ll make sense once you look it up), Gouge Away, Gigantic, Here Comes Your Man, River Euphrates, Dig for Fire… This is the band that most directly influenced Nirvana, thus, all of alternative rock of the 1990s. U2 made sure to have them open up for them in 1992. That big!

You made my day with this reaction! I've never been a hippie or even a hipster, I was born too late or too early for that, but I consider this my happy hippie song. I still remember the first time I heard this song and the free feeling it gave me. I like that I don't need drugs to get into a certain state of mind, I just need good music. 😃

Excellent choice! Love this song. The Pixies are known as surf rock/punk rock sounds. Love Joey Santiago's guitar playing on this. The Pixies were short lived but damn did they make an impact. The drummer, Kim Deal moved on after the band split to form an incredible band called, THE BREEDERS in the 90's. They were highly regarded.

The Pixies were one of the bands that predicted 90s alternative rock from the late 80s- this is from their first full-length, 1988's "Surfer Rosa", and it was a game-changer. This album is known for its raw, spare sound as the songs themselves; the sound engineer, Chicago punk icon Steve Albini, went on to engineer albums by everyone from Nirvana to Bush to solo Robert Plant (he actually hates the term "producer"). I know you guys have done The Breeders before; one of the singer/ guitarists in The Breeders, Kim Deal, was the bass player in The Pixies. Other reaction-worthy Pixies songs - "Gigantic" (with Kim Deal singing), "Monkey Gone To Heaven", "Velouria", "Wave Of Mutilation".

I'm not sure if any other the other commenters here provided some context regarding the historical significance of this song by 'The Pixies'. This song was from 1987, about 4 years BEFORE Grunge Rock totally changed the rock scene in 1991 to today. When this song was released in 1987, the rock music scenes was still dominated by Glam Rock 'Hari' bands such as 'Bon Jovi', 'Guns n Roses', 'Poison', 'Aerosmith, Van Halen, Motley Crew, White Snake, Def Leopard and many others etc. When Nirvana released their 1991 Grunge Rock album, that basically officially ended the era of the Glam Rockers Hair bands...lol. Anyway, this 'Pixies' song was one of these 1980s songs that was a few years ahead of its time. It was what the 1990s was going to sound like. These guys merely released this song and this album in the wrong decade...lol. They were 4 years too early....lol In fact, even Kurt Cobain ('Nirvana') famously said that his band 'Nirvana' was heavily influenced by 'The Pixies'.

Pixies are about innovation. I just saw them at the Anthem in DC and they still rock hard. I can't tell whether Amber knew this, but the riff was from the 80s for this song. Next try either Monkey Gone to Heaven or Here Comes Your Man.
