I recommend listening to the entire album that this is on, "Doolittle", which also contains the amazing "Monkey Gone To Heaven" and "Here Comes Your Man". The only time I got to see The Pixies perform, in 2010 at University of California, San Diego (UCSD), they played the whole "Doolittle" album, in order. Speaking of odd songs, bassist Kim Deal had a side project for awhile called The Breeders, and their song "Cannonball" is a crazy, odd, good time.

Video's from the movie Train Spotting. A lot of people found their way to the Pixies through the movie Fight Club back in 1999 which featured this song. Of course, by then a lot of people had been passionate about them for over a decade.

Check out Vamos, another inspired by Charles' study year in PR. Local guys with nothing to do would hang around on street corners yelling at female American tourists (hey blondie!) desperate for one of them to take them back to the US. Musically the song draws on 2 Broadway classics; Porgy and Bess (in the chorus) but thematically on West Side Story, the story of PR immigrant experience in the US. The song also features this weird mimicking of a sound cue found in dumb US sitcoms of the 70s and 80s. You can hear it in Joey's guitar at the midpoint of the two part chorus (there are no verses weirdly). Its placement in the song is just so weird but surrealism of the Lynchian variety circa Blue Velvet was a really strong influence on early Pixies songwriting.

Pixies were, for me personally, like a soundtrack for the entire nineties decade. They were so original, like a genre all onto itself. Imho, their music is timeless. I'm honestly a little offended that history hasn't given them the recognition I was so sure they'd be getting. Ah well, same goes for The Jam, XTC, ... Guess time can only remember so many bands. Too bad though... Great reaction. Love it you got to know them. Suggestions: anything from their first 4 albums really (1988-1991).

Have you heard of Throwing Muses? Started in 90s but still making music. From Rhode Island, lead by Kristen Hersh. One of my all times fav albums is The Real Ramona...First track Counting Backwards would be a great intro to start with. Last track Two Step is also classic song...great guitar work, Dave Narcizo's drum work is fantastic. Evocative complex lyrics. They are part of the 90's movement with the shifts in rhythm and garbly guitars.

I am a huge Pixies fan, and I appreciate your reacting to their music. Of course, any Pixies song you react to, or Breeders, or Frank Black solo, I will be 100% behind, but three songs emblematic of their sound that I recommend for your listening pleasure are Caribou, Monkey Gone To Heaven, and Wave of Mutilation. Pixies is a band you can really do a deep dive on and become obsessed with. Have fun with 'em! P.S. The Marzist from Frank Black is a great inteo to his solo work. That song sits in your head like a ticking bomb of crazy. (I think it's on his Cult of Ray album.)

I have seen them play to ten or twenty people in dingy Little Rock clubs in Boston on many occasions. They worked hard and honed their songs well. The eighties were a rough time for alt bands. So many great artists just gave up after hitting the ceiling, before Nirvana pushed through. Maybe try their song “monkey Gone To Heaven” or “Sam Hill”. All pixies songs are good tbh. Also Kimmys other band the Breeders, “Cannonball” is a good song by them.

The Pixies have a lot of great music. If you want to listen more to them, I recommend starting with Doolittle. The whole album is incredible, with some of my personal favorite songs being Hey, Mr. Grieves, Monkey Gone To Heaven, and Gouge Away. Surfer Rosa is also great, with notable songs like Cactus, Gigantic, Bone Machine, and obviously Where Is My Mind?. Come On Pilgrim is short but really good; Caribou, Vamos, Nimrod’s Son, and I’ve Been Tired all stand out to me. Bossanova is a very odd album that may be pretty hit or miss for you, though I love it; Velouria is an excellent song and Is She Weird? is another one that I think is very solid. Trompe Le Monde is a really solid album as well, with some standouts being Letter To Memphis, U-Mass, The Sad Punk, and Trompe Le Monde for me. Overall highly recommend looking more into the Pixies music

Any and every song off of Doolittle. In addition to the dynamics, they really played with non-traditional song structure, harmonics and noise as accents. They incorporated surf rock, punk, rock, etc. and they do still sound so fresh. Nothing 80's about them at all. They were definitely pioneers and are the band that most people don't know, but all of the bands they love love this band.

Pixies were also a major influence on some great alternative bands including Radiohead, Pavement, The Strokes... I lost my ticket to see them at a small venue in the early 90's when U2 asked them to be their opener, Radiohead refused to follow Pixies at a festival saying it should be the other way around (forcing the promoter to move Pixies to an earlier night), and David Bowie attributes the famous Velvet Underground quote to them 'few purchased albums, but everyone who did, started a band' in this interview kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d52Gm7Gbv76lfIk.html

Pixies were the anti make a music video for MTV back in the day. Any official music video they made back then was meant to be a joke. If you react to their official Here Comes Your Man or Velouria videos, know that they were done as a joke. They did warm up to making better videos like Allison and Head On. Last year when you were reacting to Halloween songs I requested you to check out "On Graveyard Hill" from their 2019 album.

Glad you're hitting The Pixies. I see people recommending a lot of great songs.I love a lot of the songs on Bossa Nova too. Digging for Fire and Is She Weird are great too...

Kurt also admired P J Harvey. Her early work was jaw dropping. God, the Devil, Angels, &, err, intercourse. A lot of that. Also empathy, compassion ... everything really. This is a brilliant concert : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g72Eg7x219_Wqac.html. You might find the encore (37.25 on) interesting.

"Monkey gone to Heaven" is another Pixies 'hit' you should check out 🙂 BTW images in the video clip are from the cult movie 'Trainspotting', the song is older than the movie, though.

Awesome band, is there any other PIXIES songs you should check out??? All of them!!! Such a varied sound and bazar lyrics. My faves All Over the World, Cactus, Debaser, Hey, Is She Weird, Umas. Have been lucky enough to see PIXIES 3 times in Australia and Frank Black (Black Francis aka Charles Thompson) once.

Love "Cactus" - what girlfriend wouldn't want her guy to sing that to her? Makes me smile and think at the same time.
