Ray came to Washington from his native Bronx in the early Sixties as an Army infantry/intelligence officer and then served as a CIA analyst for 27 years, from the administration of John F. Kennedy to that of George H. W. Bush. Ray’s duties included chairing National Intelligence Estimates and preparing the President’s Daily Brief, which he briefed one-on-one to President Ronald Reagan’s five most senior national security advisers from 1981 to 1985.

Ray I gained awareness of the USSR in 1956 at 8, I read the history of WW 2 and 1957 Sputnik 1961 Tsar bomb Putin is a smart man. He took the ABM treaty rejection 2001by US seriously. Rearmed the Russian .military from than till today and not stopping.

As a general rule, if you question your own sanity - you are relatively sane. I may be wrong, but "we" usually includes "I". Combining those two principles, I have to disagree with your statement, unfortunately. A person can only be considered brainwashed, if they are convinced their beliefs are rational and factual. Even people claiming to be brainwashed sarcastically - aren't. That's just a result of trauma-induced cowardice. Humans habitually overcompensate their weaknesses by pretending it's their strength. They keep up their deception, instead of aligning themselves with the truth, thanks to social conditioning. Makes it very simple to maintain control over the population, when everyone openly demonstrates their most effective manipulation interface, thinking they are super clever. It's like when kids try to tell their parents a lie... so pathetically transparent, it's sort of cute. There are no truly evil people, but plenty of cowards. The few literal psychopathic are just inhuman animals. Self-deprication is a path to self-improvement. Sarcasm is a refuge for cowards... as is patriotism, insults, hatred, and greed... and all other flavors of self-destruction.

I think he just makes the pronunciations up. That's not how Russians say it, they say it with the emphasis on the first syllable - PU tin. He says he pronounces it like that as that is how they say Lenin and Stalin, with a long second syllable. Not true. He also says Gaza weirdly too and not like Arabs do. I think he just does it to sound "foreign" and therefore expert.

Yes. Assessing Western capabilities and crumbling manufacturing base, it looked like there was no way we could win a conventional war on Russia's doorstep. My fear, since the smo began was that NATO would resort to nukes, possibly with a false flag tactical nuke, leading to an extinction-level chain reaction. The "stalemate" may be a calculation by Russia to continue attrition of the forces on its border without ever evincing a desire/ability to go any further. All the hopium being injected about Ukraine's ability to win actually helped the (preferred) war of attrition for the Russians. Putin's been in a box since taking over in '98. He had to re-build a broken nation, and a bloated military just wasn't in the cards if he wanted to right the ship. Halting NATO expansion was a near-run thing.
