While it may seem pretty obvious, it's funny how many people who don't lift or who are beginners have a misunderstanding of what to do with the bar on the way down. Some people assume that they should drop it because they've seen some Olympic lifters drop the bar after a snatch, so people must drop the bar after a deadlift too, right? On the other hand, I have also met people who think that the bar should be lowered so slowly as to be nearly silent, and that people who lower the bar properly but loudly are just "showing off". Then you get the people who never actually let the bar touch the ground, applying the "exercise machine" approach where you don't let the weight plates touch between reps in a set. Thank goodness we have large pink men like Rip to show us the way.

You will never see better results leaving out the even more beneficial phase of the lift which is the eccentric. There is no logical reason why this trend started and why coaches convincingly teach it. Rippetoe's particular excuse is "it produces soreness" and "recovery issues". I'm amused that if this was said about any other exercise he'd call you a p*ssy and tell you to suck it up buttercup, pain is a part of life and learn to sleep and eat and oh yea, gain another 100 lbs.

Center of gravity! You want the bar directly under you, which is why it'll lightly (hopefully) scrape your shins and thighs on the way up, because that's keeping it as close to your center of gravity as possible. I highly recommend his book Starting Strength! I still have my copy from 15 years ago, it's what got me into lifting!

Rogue Fitness SUPPOSEDLY created a process that helps the bars withstand the abuse of cross-fitters a lot better. Instead, why don't we...teach them to take better care of the bars? So much money wasted just to avoid teaching basic barbell care.

Your first mistake was to assume that crossfitters are people of logic, common sense, and un-histrionics. These are impossible behaviors for crossfitters to adapt. Your second mistake was to fail to realize that proper use of bars has no place in crossfit. Bars must be thrown with as much theatrics as humanly possible.

Forgive my ignorance, but is the main reason it's done fast on the way down is b/c the main goal of the deadlift is to lift heavy, which is hard to do safely on eccentric? If I'm not going for PR's and such, what if you lower the weight (like use half?) and use same tempo going up as down? I guess that has a different effect ... is it a different type of lift ... ? Or just stupid? I'm just trying to understand: why is this the correct way?

I guess what ever positive training effect you might get, will be negated by the time you'll be walking like a penguin and not being able to train. Instead you could do some back-focusing variant with less weight (RDL I guess). Another thing is that ecentric motion is harder to control. I let my lifts go freely from knee level to avoid putting my back in wrong position with 5 RM weight.

@@jakerichards8344 again, that's important on the way up. Once you're at the top of the lift, it's irrelevant. If you look that up still photo of anyone on the planet at the top of the deadlift, you would have absolutely no idea if they set up close to bar, three inches from the bar, if they dropped their butt while taking the slack out just before the lift, etc. You're right in that, on the way down, it's about pushing your butt back (hips) more than it is about squatting down (knees). Proper setup is essential; no one's arguing that. I disagree that it has anything to do with the bar path during the eccentric portion of the lift.

Controlled slow eccentric deadlifting is really really hard on the back muscles, and will make you so tired that you will slow progress once you move past 2-3 plates a side. In terms of caring for equipment, I don't see much difference between how she lowered the bar vs letting it go. This would still damage equipment. Also, I don't believe in letting go of the bar once it touches the ground because then muscles relax, and one has to reset their whole posture before lifting it again, thus breaking continuity of the set. I believe in tapping the plates against the floor and going right back up which permits me to maintain the proper posture.

I still have nightmares about this dude who would set up a fucking tripod to record his 315 pull and epic release from the top. Turned sideways so he can see himself in the mirror, of course.

There is a guy at my gym who does rows on the rack and drops them on the rack after every single rep what fun. One more reason I am glad I finally ended my membership

Disagree, I've been deadlifting at home for a few months and forced to slow my eccentrics right down. This, along with only deadlifting heavy once every 2 weeks has caused the most rapid increase to my deadlift in years

No-name Karen on the internet versus 40+ years of experience of the guy who wrote the book. Hmm......... sounds like you had a shit deadlift in the first place. Try that nonsense when you have 3 wheels on each side, watch your dead crawl to a screeching halt. But hey... you're the expert!

@@ChernobylAudio666 It's very apparent that you might want to use both methods. Afterall, check out Rauno and Martins.. they certainly aren't putting the bar down "as fast as possible" on these sets, and I trust them immensely. These movements serve different purposes, and you should avoid a myopic "1 way is the only acceptable right way" mentality. For me, a quick and sudden descent from a fully upright position is TERRIBLE for my spine. I use a slow descent to the knee and only then release tension. I don't give a damn who wrote what book, it's what my body is telling me. Rauno: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d5-Kh72cnpfclWQ.html Martins: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oK6TmtFp0rCwimQ.html
