I miss being an M60 A1 Tank Crewman. Love the sound of the engine. Marine Corps 1982-86. Semper Fi.

Oh, the sound of that diesel brings back some wonderful memories! I can just smell the exhaust!! My knuckles fairly glow with the memory of doing track tension on those. The M60A3 was a wonderful tank, I still remember when we transitioned from the M60s to the M1A1 in 1988 while in Germany in Vilseck. I started out on M48A5s.

I will never forget the sound of those turbochargers and diesel. I lived in the M60A1. 8TH ID 1976, Driver, Gunner and we were all mechanics. Thank you

I enjoy reading all the comments, seems like there's quite a few old tankers out there. Personally, I was a 19E from 82 to 86 and loved every minute of it. Started on the m48A5 in Korea and transitioned over to the a1, and ft. Carson got on the a3. Good days.

I took my basic training at Fort Knox, KY in 1965 During our 9 mile march to our bivouac, aconvoy of M 60s would pass us along the road and man I really dug the sound of their diesel engines.

When the driver throttles up the engine, the tank reveals incredible mobility and acceleration properties.

The M60 tanks were by far my favorite. I was a Tank Mechanic 63C and did my training at Ft.Knox. I also worked at the Detroit Tank plant in the early 80’s still on Active Duty. What a great place to work and even better when I did fielding to guard units and M1 tanks to Active units. Those are days I will cherish forever.

" ... that gasoline V12 with nice Turbowhine has perhaps the most impressive sound of any tank". The M60A3, as well as all M60 versions were V12, as you say, but NOT gasoline ... Diesel!! I am a former M60A1 Tank Commander, and in those days, MOS 11Echo. V12 diesel-powered, turbocharged, fuel-injected, air-cooled engine. And great mileage ... 2+ gallons to the mile, LOL!

Guantanamo Bay, 1987. I was serving onboard the USS Biddle (CG-34) at the time and we had journeyed down to GTMO for REFTRA after an extended yard period in Philadelphia. One night while the ship was moored I walked on over to the phone bank to call my girlfriend at the time and a column of 4 or 5 Marine Corps M-60's passed by. They were indescribably *loud* beasts. Truly impressive.

The M60 series Tank is not a Patton. You will see it all over the internet but they are wrong. I was an M60 A1 Tank Crewman in the eighties in the Marine Corps. The Patton came before the M60 series but the Patton name never was added to the M60.

Pretty Neat! We used to see M60 Tanks at the Detroit Tank Arsenal in Warren, Michigan in the 1970's where they were built. They used to test run the tanks with the turret pointed rearward, lights on, and their engines were loud. They had a water tank there and full test track.

If they didn’t have way too many hours of operation, yes, they were extremely reliable. And they had better fuel mileage than the Abrams thus less need to field refuel. If they were long in operating hours, they gave a lot of fits. Replacing torsion bars in the field was a complete total pain in the ass (the older tracks hah torsion bars so worn out it’s as if two or three of them would give out at a time.)

Many times in Germany in the snow the Grunts used to stand behind the Tank and keep warm in the exhaust. Once, our loader Freddie popped his hatch with no shirt on and yelled; Damned it's hot in here. The snowballs flew and he buttoned up quickly!!!!

With the drivers guard removed from the turret basket, the driver can enter or leave the drivers compartment from inside the tank. Tanks are always parked on the tank ramp with the turret traversed so the main gun can rest on the travel lock.
