In this video, Greg with the help of his nephew, Austin, add girts to the sawmill shed / sawmill cover. We are adding this shed space to the sawmill cover. It will be a great place to store so many of the things we need for building and for the sawmill, itself. We are excited to have this additional space.
Next up, milling the board and batten for this shed. We are definitely maxing out the sawmill with the size of the log we are using...definitely the biggest log we've milled yet!
Did you know we are also building a barn?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We recently finished the foundation. Our next step will be milling the lumber for this build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
***If you haven't checked out our Sawmill Cover Build from the beginning, definitely check out the playlist at the end of this video. We have shared the process of building this sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and live in North Idaho. This sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between! We are excited to complete this project, so we can continue milling lumber for our barn build.
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we are building:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

Greg, the shed will offer protection form the rain and snow and give you a nice workbench and storage area. Blessings to you.

We are very excited to work on this shed enclosure! It will be so nice to have a little storage space for items we use for the sawmill. Extra storage is always nice! Hope you enjoy!

Thank you, Mike! From my experience, the more flat places to put stuff - the more clutter... 🤣But, we can at least try to get organized and cleaned up. Thanks for always watching! 😊

Howdy y’all- your sawmill shed is coming along really nice and looks great! I’m wishing I had poured more concrete for a wider walkway. Hope y’all have a great weekend. God bless

One thought on the board and batten: You might want to standardize dimensions with board and batten on the barn/shop. Since you are starting on the smaller structure, you could be tempted to make the battens thinner and closer than you would on the larger building. I’m also curious to see what finish you put on the siding. Looking great!

Thank you! The sawmill cover/shed has been good practice for the barn build. We plan on putting the same pattern of board and batten on the shed that is planned for the barn - 10" board with 3" batten. Window is also the same one we are going to use for the barn. The stain is a natural product that we are going to try. It from Canada, but we got it off of Amazon. It's called Lifetime Wood Treatment. It's water soluble and should be a one and done. We are looking forward to see how it turns out to make sure we want to use it on the barn, as well. Thanks for watching!
