I've never worked with round logs before, so this is a great 'warm up' project into that world. Round wood has it has it's challenges, and I have my weaknesses, but I'm gaining inspiration through this process when considering future projects built this way. I am feeling like I could use a few more tools and a lot more knowledge for this kind of work, so my joinery techniques are very basic. I would have liked to join the braces more seamlessly to the posts, however, my attempts at that were a failure (not shown in the video). It's something to work on!
As I've said before, my projects are never perfect and my techniques are very rudimentary. But I think it's important to know that we don't all have to be an 'expert' and execute 'perfection' in order to still have something good and functional :)
Not entirely sure if this will be a 2 or 3 part series. Have to see how it goes!

Hi everyone! Thought I would give an update on Steve as many people are sending well wishes. Thank you for that! He is ok. We have settled on going to the USA for surgery, and hopefully in the next couple of months it will happen. Why USA? It’s often difficult to access health care (with a spine specialist) in Canada, many people have long waits until they can have surgery. We don’t want to be in that long line up, so heading south is what we feel is the best choice.

My 4 yr old son and I watch your videos most mornings together as his mechanical interests come to the surface. I’ve worked and enjoyed many trades over the yrs and know many ways to get the job done, but watching you tackle the challenges alone with simplicity & success is the ground I wish for him to walk on when I’m no longer around. We should all stand proud on at the end of the day reflecting on our accomplishments as much as you do Michelle, even with its imperfections😏.. As builders we are the only ones who really ever notice the little things gone askew. Looks awesome from Pennsylvania!

Watching you drive in the those long screws on the corner braces using a Ryobi Drill Driver prompted me to suggest you try using an impact driver instead when driving those long, tough screws. Once you use an impact driver you'll never look back because they are amazing work horses when it come to driving tough fasteners. I have successfully used a standard size Hitachi impact driver to drive 3/8" galvanized lag screws into 1-1/2" pressure treated lumber with ease. Of course I pre-drilled the lumber to the root diameter of the screw threads since those amazing tools can't do the impossible. You are one hard working lady who lets nothing stand in her way, and are an inspiration to all young women who wonder if they are capable of tackling those kinds of jobs. I applaud you Michelle and hope that Steve's back surgery was a success.

The best part about building anything is you get to use the lessons you learn from each project moving forward. Once you're done with this shed you can make a shed for the sawmill and one for the mini ex and skid steer, look at that you have a list of future projects to be more "perfectly imperfect" on. Hope the surgery went well for Steve.

Hi, You are cool with me. Good job. Really. A couple years ago, I built a barn for an animal rescue up in Vermont. Smiling, I have to admit, I got called a control freak by the lady I built it for. I designed the whole thing myself, Built most of it by myself too. I was doing it for free, the lady ended up giving me a thousand dollars for my troubles. It turned out really nice. big loft, cool stairs, drive through design... I had fun. If I am, a control freak, I insist on having a fun build, what ever the project. : ) Right on, George.

Coating off the nails or shards of hammer head can fly into your beautiful eyes. It only takes once. I hope your hubby had a successful operation. You are astounding!! A thousand licks, I mean likes! Pretty darn impressive to say you've never built with round logs before! I'm a log builder by trade in the UK. If you want to achieve a more "seamless" fit with your posts then I'd recommend getting yourself some Log scribes, I use ones made by Veritas. Also when working with round timber Snap a chalk line in the centre of the log so you have a reference point to work to when measuring or lining up your plumb/ level line! Hope this helps, great vid!

Just watched all 19 videos non-stop. I'm a retired master carpenter & know what it's like working alone. You learn to be creative & come up with ways to do things alone. You have a variety of skills that I can appreciate. I usually worked alone in my woodworking shop but did have a crew of 11 master & journeyman carpenters of which 3 were women. We did general contracting & high-end finish carpentry. The best foreman working for me for 25 years was a woman. I never saw females as weak individuals b/c it's been proven to me they are not. BTW, hope all is well with Steve. If you ever have questions I can answer for you, please notify me & I'll give you my email address. You're doing well, don't get discouraged.

My first job out of high school was building pole barns you're using non-dimensional lumber you are doing an outstanding job. You will never get 45° exactly out of logs as you know because the higher you go on the log the skinnier it gets, I'm extremely impressed with what you have done so far my first video I've watched but I will subscribe.

Just a suggestion, when I build with round logs or poles , I cut a v type notch in the vertical post for the round horizontal log to lay on. Seems stronger to me. I also wanted to say how much you remind me of my wife , she is also a very hard worker. She can work like a man all day and fix herself up in the evening and look like a runway model ! I am a very lucky man and so is Steve. Hope his back surgery goes well !

Great job. I did the same thing once trying to level tapered poles. I ended up measuring the top and putting a mark in the middle and same for bottom. Then snap chalk line and use that to plumb. This will not fix your 45s but it does make plumb poles. Hope this helps someone someday.
