PVC vs DWV fittings

PVC and DWV look similar, however they have different applications.
Drain, Waste, Vent is not made to hold pressure.
Schedule 40 PVC is made to go in a pressurized system.

Thank you. After searching for this information and coming across a couple dozen videos with no success, your video popped up. So I wanted to know the basic differences on the DWV drain fittings and its pressure rating with the pressure pvc fittings. I'm hard plumbing my above ground pool hose assembly while adding a DIY waterfall and sprinkler. It's the first time working with PVC. I had bought the DWV 90° elbows because they were a little cheaper. I noticed the differences between them and well long story short, I have to return all the drain fittings and replace them with pressure fittings. Thanks for your video.

They are both scheduled 40 PVC fittings One is made for pressure and one is not due to the size of the connection The coupling area That's the only difference

I haven't heard of anything on DWV fittings being code anywhere, so I stick to schedule 40 when replacing my drain and vent pipes. I'm switching all water lines from pvc to pex

Oy vay. No one could re-plumb my pool plumbing after the big freeze in Texas, so I had to do it myself. I was so meticulous in my square cuts, (I cut my PVC in a miter box!) deburring, cleaning, priming and gluing. The end product looked so good... Oops, I used DWV, now I have to tear it all apart and do it all over. You learn from your mistakes.

I have 1 of those, couldn't figure out where I got it. Ther deeper fittings are stronger when joining pipe and keeping it straight in line

Do they make schedule 40 slip couplings? I found some slip couplings at home Depot but they appear to be dwv, since they sre shorter and seem like softer plastic. I have an underground plumbing fix to make for my pool, and i really need a slip coupling (or 3) since its at a T.

When is a sink vent not required to be 6” above FLR? I’m being told it has to do with the fittings..? I thought they only exception was for the vent to be at a 45deg rise…

What kind of pipe should I use under concrete for drains and I also have a 36' run and I need to corner it so it goes down my side yard. How would I angle that with a drain at the interchange.. Hope that makes since ,thank you!

If there's no pressure on the inside then it doesn't really matter. My preference is always schedule 40 because it can handle a good load. If you're going to put it under concrete make sure that it is 12 or sew-in below-ground but I'm not an expert in drainage systems

On lowes there are pvc pipes that are schedule 40 also labeled as DWV. What is the difference there?

They are technically both scheduled 40. Schedule 40 is a type of plastic.. The difference is it is the length of the coupling. In a pressure coupling there is more more material To be glued onto the pipe.

Mislabeled. Read the description to see if it's pressure rated because if it's not, then it's not schedule 40 and it's just DWV. All schedule 40 PVC can be used for DWV but not all DWV can be used as schedule 40 since DWV requires no pressure.

Can you mix DWV and Schedule 40? Is there any downside to using schedule 40 for DWV purposes other than cost? Sch40 is more durable and my project is small enough that the extra cost is negligible. I'm thinking particularly about the part of the waste pipe that gets buried outside the house....seems like the more robust pipe might have the advantage in shifting soil. Do they make stuff like sanitary tee's in sch40?

Yes you can mix DWV and schedule 40. There is no downside to it whenever you're using it in a DWV situation.

Because DWV is schedule 40. Everybody gets this so wrong. Schedule 40 is a standard for OD/ID size and fitment but has nothing to do with strength or pressure ratings. There is pressure rated schedule 40 used for stuff like water service lines (pressure) and there is schedule 40 DWV which is NON pressure rated and meant for drain, waste, and venting (under 140* gasses). Both are schedule 40

@@TheMuddman74 Yes, the material is in fact schedule 40. You are correct. However to not cause confusion you have to call one DWV and the other schedule 40 (or pressure fittings) but that gets confusing.

@@AquanutAcademy strongly disagree. They are both called schedule 40 and thinking that calling only pressure pipe schedule 40 is what confuses lower level guys like laborers. Schedule 40 has absolutely nothing to do with pressure at all. Schedule 40 is a standard measurement practice for ID/OD in order to have a standard for what will fit this pipe (as far as fittings/joints). Hence both are called schedule 40 because they both have the exact same ID/OD and so you know that any type of schedule 40 fitting will fit. The ASTM code is what determines/calls out the pressure specs for any pipe. ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials. They were created and put a standard in place solely for this purpose....so that there is no arguing, or misunderstanding, and all specs will be made clear as day. **Absolutely no hate/shade being thrown your way from me friend but I am also very well versed in this and have been trying to train people properly for years. It is the misinformation from others that causes the greatest loss
