Nile Red made a video making chromyl chloride which pretty much undergoes the same oxydation process as PCC for alcohols (no further than the aldehyde). Basically both compounds use chromium in the +6 oxidation state which is always neat.

+Chem Player I think the problem is that oxidation with chlorochromates has to happen in an aqueous environment. Toluene -> benzaldehyde using CrO2Cl2 requires the formation of an intermediate chromate ester of benzyl alcohol, which is later isolated and then hydrolyzed to benzaldehyde. I don't think having water around for the chromate step is a good idea. The acidic environment necessary to use the chlorochromate salts will cause hydrolysis to benzaldehyde immediately, but possibly also transesterification with more of the chromate ester to form benzaldehyde dibenzylacetal or something. That, and I think chlorochromates might be able to oxidize benzaldehyde, as the aldehyde is polarized by the ring more than just an alkyl chain. Just my thoughts on it... let me know if you find a successful method. It would be a fine bit of chemistry!

Doug, can you make chromyl chloride using chromium(6+) oxide, sodium chloride, and concentrated sulfuric acid? I'd like to know if it's more efficient to use chromium(6+) oxide as your hexavalent chromium source instead of potassium dichromate (this decreases reaction steps although starting from dichromate to make chromyl chloride can be done in one pot).

How do you clean the fritted disc in the Buchner funnel?
@erictorkelson5778
@erictorkelson5778 6 жыл бұрын
John Ratko it depends on what needs to be cleaned out of there. In general sulfuric acid and h2o2 do a good job of cleaning things up. I recently purchased a Buchner whose fritted disc was black and brown and orange ... filthy!! A few treatments of H2SO4 and H2O2 restored it back to a pristine sparkly white.

Thought it was a bit weird to put the beaker in the freezer with only a watch glass covering. I would just put it in an ice water bath or brine water ice bath.

Something smells a little fishy here and it's not the pyridine ... at the start of the video, you mentioned that you would use this for oxidation to benzaldehyde. I don't know if you are already aware that there are already videos on these exact methods of PCC preparation and oxidation of benzyl to benzaldehyde by Chem Player. It's not hard to be original in the content of your videos on youtube, there are tonnes of reactions that haven't been covered.

+Dr. Heisenburg I can't watch chemplayer's videos. The computer voice is too difficult
@dougmapper3306

+Dr. Heisenburg Yes, I have been waiting for someone to mention this. I have 161 videos planned, and many of them require reagents that need to be prepared. I would like to show their preparation from OTC materials, so that I can make playlists of reaction chains needed to get to a given compound from OTC components. Unfortunately, I find that just about every week someone posts a video about a reaction I have already planned out and performed calculations for. However, I strive to make clear, easy to follow videos with a good reply rate to comments, and hope to create a unique viewing experience on this channel in that manner. I promise that anything you see here is absolutely NOT a copy of anyone else's video, but a preparation taken from various chemistry textbooks and academic journals, or just basic chemistry knowledge. In addition to a few 'routine' procedures, I plan to produce some cutting-edge stuff (like the ketene lamp) in the mix, but these are often very expensive and time consuming to make. Also, I am reluctant to mention them here with the fear that someone will do it before me and the onging work will be for naught. They are coming - I promise. I appreciate the question, and would like to thank you for helping me stay transparent. If there is a reaction you would like to see, PM me and I'll see what I can do. :)

Dr. Heisenburg I don't come from a chemistry background so maybe it's easier for you to understand because you are more familiar with chemistry terms? It's just not clear enough for me to watch the video fluidly. I don't have trouble with any of the other chemistry hobbyists on youtube, it's kind of a shame because ChemPlayer has so much content I want to watch, but don't want to watch (it's not pleasurable to watch) if that makes any sense. If they hired a voice actor or used a better TTS they could blow up like Nile Red or Doug's Lab (recently). Presentation is important, especially in educational videos.
