You were 27 when you posted this??? You look so much younger! Anyway, I'm a big fan after hearing you recently. Your playing is amazing, especially the more popular stuff that wasn't written in ragtime. Your Silent Night is definitely my favorite Christmas song this year. I hope you're able to keep praying and posting for a long time.

You never know what you will stumble about on you tube. Love ragtime and country blues guitar and I guess I worked my way from a video of maple leaf rag on guitar to your channel. Love your playing! There really is not much as cool as ragtime piano. There is something about the syncopation that is just mesmerizing. Glad I found your music. Put a smile on my face!

You're great! I love ragtime. I played piano in another life before I decided to concentrate on the guitar. I was able to play Joplin's Solace and The Entertainer. A friend and I got into Joplin for some reason for a time. I had a plastic bust of him on my piano when I was in my 20's and early 30's. I'm 65 now and quit piano in my late 30's to lend my time to one instrument, the guitar because of time constraints. I really enjoy the sound of ragtime played well, like you do. Thanks for being out there. Ragtime is important music. I'm glad there are people like you to carry on it's legacy. Cheers and best wishes! You're the coolest of all time. :)

Its going to be a tuff day for me today. Fact is the days are getting a bit tuffer every day and my only choice is to work them through, remain at the wheel, try another solution. And as I get worn down and crampy, I go hopping over to find you and there's my solution. You are an extremely talented young lady and have the guts to use it and move on for more. Your music is light and joyful, a tune I can sing or shout out, and the world backs off and gives me a chance to get back in the race. And for a man my ages (93) that's a trumpet blaring victory. Thank you for all the effort yo put into your music, and thank you for being you.

I got my love of ragtime (guitar) from going to Disney World every year as a kid, and from Steve Howe, the guitarist in the band Yes. If you love Disneyland, you should try to make it to Disney World. All of Disneyland would fit in the Magic Kingdom parking lot and you would still have room to park about 500 cars. The place is amazing. My favorite place on the planet.

Auios, The combination of notes when Kristen applied her head to the keys are Eb and F#, both of which are actually black, which makes sense: black keys are elevated meaning they're the first thing one's head/object is going to bump onto when dropping on the keybed itself.

I love the people that supply negative comments about someone who performs music. "Tempo was wrong", "You missed some notes", etc. MY answer is simple to these people, "Oh.... I'm sorry. Please sit down and show me my mistakes. Obviously you must be very talented". They usually walk away without another comment.

I can't believe how incredibly you play. You are so very talented. I've always wanted to learn to play piano. You are a beautiful talented young lady, truly gifted. My name is Lonny Cowell, most likely cousin of Simon. I however live in Texas, but my family from father is Scottish, and from my mother, Hannah, Irish. So the best of both worlds. And as far as the guys saying inappropriate things to you, just ignore them. I as well as a lot of my talented musical cousins have your back. Keep up the great ragtime beat. Oh and, I also love disney in Cali. It truly is a magical place.

Have you ever played with a tenor or plectrum banjoist That instrument and ragtime piano are just meant to play together. They can occupy an entire line-up's worth of musical space if they play their cards right, it's incredible. PS: I'm learning the tenor banjo as we speak.
@TheAvenstar5 жыл бұрын
Re learning a new piece (talking about RAGS) and how long does it take? ....................how about it depends on the degree of difficulty? !!! Some are so easy (like the Peacherine) you can learn it in a few days. Others (like Elite Snycopations) can take months because of difficulty with proper fingering (scantly supplied on the sheet music) , and the disjointed octaves and chords required in the last section. Unless, of course, you're more than just a mostly self-taught pianist like me. If you're conservatory trained, ALL the Joplin rags are a snap and can be sight read at nearly full tempo on the first reading.
@blizzyblaze97358 жыл бұрын
I love the pace that you play the Peacherine Rag. Very brisk. Also, would you ever be interested in learning how to play The Ragtime Dance by Scott Joplin? And btw next when some crazy nutzoid asks you to marry them, you should tell them off! And that guy who said you interpreted a song like an Asian 3 year old, their really ignorant! I love your rags and you play very whimsically!
@Slashco8 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristen, I just found this channel recently but I really dig your ragtime and also your Disney renditions! I used your "Friend Like Me" cover as a backing track and sang the vocals, and it sounded great! (this occurred in the privacy of my own home and no profit was made, please don't sue.) :) I used to play piano until about 10 years ago when I moved and sold it. I haven't really played since except sporadically, when I could find a piano somewhere. I can still remember some pieces like The Entertainer, but it's all muscle memory. If I try to think about what I'm playing nothing comes out - but one time (when I was slightly drunk) I sat down at a piano and just let my hands move by themselves and it came out perfectly. I should really buy a piano again, and some wine. Love your channel!

You are lucky for having the opportunity to learn piano early. My parents faked not realizing that playing piano was making me happier than anything else. I was 3 years-old and everytime we were at my grandma's house, I was spending most of the time on her organ. When I was 10, I told my parents that I wanted to learn piano. They said they did not have money for that. But they spent even more on activities that were not interesting to me. And when I was 12, they bought me a toy piano, 2 octaves, could play only one note at a time and the keys were not standard sized. Nobody could learn to play with such a crap. There was a piano teacher living 3 houses from our house. Today I am too busy to practise and barely have time to do so. My potential talent has been spoiled. My story has similar examples among many people. You were very lucky to have parents who did want you to learn piano and do things that THEY wanted for you.

Hey, Kristen - this video is awesome and you are too funny! :) I've got a question myself actually: I am merely curious as to how long it took you to feel comfortable with playing ragtime? I am attempting to master this advanced playing style myself, and with all of the octave playing and other tricky techniques... :/ Just wondering about how long it took you to feel comfortable, confident and fully able to play this advanced style... even just an approximation would be much appreciated. :) Your playing is outstanding, by the way! Keep up the good work - I love all of your covers!

A LONG TIME!! Ragtime isn't easy. It's still a challenge to learn new pieces.. but it gets a little easier the more pieces I learn. I would say it took at least a few years to feel comfortable enough to play it for others. My biggest challenge is still all the jumps in the left hand.
