That was a very good summary on fly selection. I think the most important piece of information is what species you’re targeting. Certainly trout and pike probably won’t take the same flies under most circumstances. I really like your take on the types of flies for trout. One could probably do well with just using a pheasant tail nymph and Adams dry fly. Of the hundreds of nymphs, streamers, dry flies and terrestrials in my boxes I’ve caught 90% of the trout on 5-6 patterns. And that has been in all 54 states!

Here the thing, and I’m going to do this by telling a story. I do a lot of smallmouth fishing in a local river and came upon a fella using a spin caster. Asked him how he was doing and if he was catching anything, etc. etc. basic fisherman bs. He proceeds to tell me that he has caught a couple using a white, swirly tail grub that was 3” long on a 1 ounce jig head. He then proceeds to ask me about fly fishing and tell me he started to do but gave it up because he could “never match the hatch”. (Insert eye roll here) So I asked him, “When was the last time you saw a white swirly tail grub hatch?” As Brian stated “Pick a fly and make it act like food.” Couldn’t have put it any better.

I'm a beginner and I am picking out a couple starter flies and I couldn't decide what I wanted so then I thought about what bait or lures I know are getting the hits from bluegill and bass, so I have been looking at minnows and ones that look like meal worms because I know that's what the bass and bluegill around me will hit. not sure if that is the totally correct idea to have but I feel starting out, that would be the best selection for me so I can at least work on my casting and maybe also catch something while I am there. I also utilized mad river's hotline and they suggested using minnows and double barrled poppers. So I am taking their suggestion on the minnow selection and then I am also going to try fly that closely resembles a meal worm.

This is the exact same concept as archery hunting. A 2000 dollar hunting outfit and a 3000 dollar bow that shoots 500fps doesn't make you a better hunter. I know plenty of guys that swear only muzzy broad heads kill deer and a certain brand arrow are the only ones that fly straight. Your approach to the animal weather it be in a blind, stalking or in a stand is far more important than the brand or speed of your gear.

@@Madriveroutfitters Thank you for all the usefull information. I'm a long time spin fishermen but I'm growing bored of it so I'm taking the leap into the fly world. There aren't really any fly shops near where I live, about an hour east of Pittsburgh, for me to go pick someone's brain with all the questions I have. So your videos have educated me from knowing absolutely nothing about fly fishing to being able to pick out a rod reel outfit and have a basic understanding of flies. I went to a Orvis shop in Ligonier PA and felt very out classed by their elitist attitude. They almost looked annoyed that I was asking questions and scoffed at the idea of me wanting to get a rod reel outfit that wasn't thousands of dollars. Your attitude and the delivery of your content doesn't give me that vibe in anyway which makes me feel included in trying to learn this sport. If every person that fly fished were the way the people in that shop were I would have walked away from the idea of fly fishing..so thank you again for changing my mind and educating me without making me feel stupid for wanting to learn
