Hi Esha 😊 thanks for the question l. For exams yes you need to learn all of the anatomy they teach you, and it’s quite detailed. However as for medicines, you don’t need to know them all by heart. You learn the groups of medicines, how they work and the side effects.

Salary is more in USA.

Depends on the university 3. You don’t get paid for your internship however the NHS pays for your tuition fee for that year 4. F1 and F2 are after your degree Hope that helps ☺️

Hey. So annual leave. We get 9 days annual leave per 4 month. You can take it all together if you like but most often the someone has taken annual leave so you can take more than 10 days off (including weekends) I work 1 weekend a month. But when I’m on A&e I’ll be working every other weekend

Thank you for the replay. So does that mean that you essentially don't get a summer holiday. Because i read on the BMA website that you get 28 days annual leave and I wanted to take all of the 28 days for a summer holiday. Im thinking thats not possible?

You only have 9 days per 4 months rotation. So you can’t take all the days in one go

Can you take 18 days by using the last 9 days of 1st four months and 1st 9days of next 4 months

Theoretically you could but in reality that would not happen. It’s difficult to coordinate leave anyway and to organise it that way would be hard. Plus you wouldn’t want to miss the first week of your new rotation.

Hi Sarah. Moving distances is not true. You apply for a training programme which is a minimum of 2 years meaning you are in the same city for those years. Often doctors apply to a particular area and get their choice, so moving often isn’t an issue - unless it’s something you personally want to do

@@DrEzgiOzcan I have to disagree. Generally it is very difficult to settle somewhere for a long time in medicine. Especially when you start speciality training and there are not many jobs available in that specialty you could be moving around every couple of years. Some are more lucky than others. GP you can generally stay where you want

@@Pixydust143 Hi Nat, I do agree with what you are saying. There is a lot of moving involved but its not on a yearly basis, whilst in training you can be sure to be in a region of the country for at least 2-3 years.

Unfortunately lots of scrubs were going missing - which is why they brought in this system

It’s all about time management. When you’ve done weekends it night shifts you have zero days during the week and they’re perfect times to study for exams. You can also book some study leave too which helps prepare Yes £2000 is a decent amount. You may not be able to save a huge deal but it’ll be enough for rent, bills and a social life

You get given a list of hospital and jobs that you can rank. Your combined score with the SJT is then used to allocate you

Thanks! London deaneries are known to be competitive with high scores. But the competition rate changes every year but generally remains high. I can’t remember my individual scores but I think I got around 86-87 overall. I was in the third decile in Med school Initially I thought being at the bottom of the deanery would mean I’d get crap jobs but I got really good rotations. Remember something you don’t find appealing can appeal to others so there’s actually no such things as having a low score and getting a bad rotation. I got my 4th choice for example.

The Junior Doctor thanks for replying! 86/87 is amazing! I guess I need to see how my finals go first and then make a decision if I want to risk it. North west would be my other choice which is also competitive so think it may be risky to put it second! I’m only currently 8th decile (based on not a lot!) But it is shocking ... but I have a bsc and publication so if that doesn’t change then I’d have 40 points before SJT so I’d need minimum 46 on that which is asking a lot!! Sorry for the ramble. North central deanery was competitive the year I did it as there were only 4 hospitals. But now they’ve merged the with east London deanery so the competition rate is lower. You’d be surprised how well you can do. There are people with lower deciles in top deaneries. All depends on the sjt unfortunately Good luck!

Hi Vini 😊 the london deanery I got into required a score of >85, but other deaneries have much lower marks which means you’ll get into somewhere in the UK, no need to worry 😊

Hi Siam. Good luck!! It’s still good. I’d advice looking at the universities admission criteria. Some universities place emphasis on gcse grades and others do not. You just need to make sure you meet their criteria before you apply

Work hours wise - GPs work office hours, however in hospital you’d need to do night shifts and weekends. There is a greater job opportunity for GPs as there’s a national shortage and lots of slots. It really depends on what kind of medicine you want to practice

Hi Ed. Yes so to be eligible to apply for gp training you have to sit the first part of the MRCGP. It consists of a computer based mcq, sjt and a short osce. You then rank your deanery like you would with foundation training and get a place according to your overall score

Lol when I first read this I was in the middle of my first on call shift. 13 hours and only had a 10 minute break! So at that point I felt like things were not going great but having survived and now being sat in my PJs with my dinner ready to get devoured I feel much better knowing that I survived :) Otherwise it has been ok so far. Hard work but ok :) I just hope things get easier as time goes by. How is F2 treating you?

Ive had loads of them days, gone a whole shift without peeing or eating lunch whilst looking up bloods etc. It gets so much better as you get confident! and days you work hard are so much more rewarding, well done on getting through your first on call shift :) F2 is going well so far, sometimes being the most junior in the team means I still feel like the F1, but the added responsibility gives me that push :D

It depends on whether the GMC decides to approve it.

Foundation course is 2 years. You apply for speciality training after you’ve completed those years

Biggest tip is choosing a good partner finding good resources and going through them together. You have to be consistent. What do you mean after placements?

I would read over the things we covered that day. But also takes some evenings off to rejuvenate. I used an osce book I got from amazon. It had a multi coloured front cover, can’t quite remember the name

50k is roughly the starting salary for a new trainee. The salary goes up every year as you become senior

I would know I’m afraid. Dentists are paid on a different scale and do a mixture of private work so it varies

£27,000 is the basic salary. It gets supplemented depending on the number of on calls that you are assigned, therefore after tax your monthly take home salary is £2000

If working full time you are allowed to do additional locum work alongside your usual work rota (given you are not going over the recommended number of hours per week) - regarding earnings, it’s really a personal decision that you’ll have to weigh up for yourself

If you’ve already completed an internship after your medical degree you can enter the NHS as a clinical fellow (doctor not in a training programme) before applying for speciality training

I don’t think they say they have no social life. Socialising first then is harder due to on calls, weekend shifts and night shifts. And when we do have free time it’s usually on a weekday where other people are working.

But essentially the NHS is underfunded and doctors are overworked I'd say (but then again i'm not a medicine student yet) work-life balance is better in Canada and Australia

True. But there is little progression for HCA, but with medics their salary will go up substantially every year

The Junior Doctor oh yeah totally! But it’s still crazy that you can almost walk off the street to a hospital/nursing home as a HCA and with over time or extra shifts end up with the same salary as a doctor! I work as Hca, just finished my nurse training so it’s crazy to think who gets what in contract to workload! 😳

Marta_Eventing yeah very true. but doctors in their early stages of the career get payed almost the same as nurses... its only until they choose their speciality that they increase in pay. The average pay for doctors is probably between 37-50k. it takes years to get to consultant level where real money lies and most dont reach that level at all hence why they stay within the pay i mentioned throughout their careers.
