Came here to say this. Henry and I agree on this point. Also, I do pay for news sites that I trust and use. I subscribe to my local papers (local journalism is IMPORTANT) and for orgs like 404.

What do you guys think of data deletion services? Seems like a great thing to me, but I cannot ward off the thought that its a trojan horse that will only further consolidate your data to be used against you once you stop paying. Paranoia or actual risk? Thanks! ❤

Running a news organization is super expensive. In a ideal world Information should be free but the people who research and publish that information should get paid for their work. That's why we have less and less news organizations.
@nedludd7622
@nedludd7622 Ай бұрын
"fewer and fewer news organizations". A question about publishing information is who pays for the information that is published? Basically it is rich individual or corporate owners and investors. So the news you see may reflect their biases or desires. We see that problem in MSM like NYT and Wapo. NYT has recently had scandals about its fake news in favor of Israel for its genocidal war in Gaza.

I thought there's less and less news organisations because a long time ago they relaxed the regulations and eventually the of majority news and media consolidated into 6 major companies.

3:25 i share the same question. What real time AV or app layer firewall applications exist for linux? That are reliable and without telemetry.

Don't people use SIM PINs?
@cheesium238
@cheesium238 Ай бұрын
Unless you are referring to something else a SIM PIN only protects your physical SIM from being accessed, lets say someone snatches your phone (turned off) takes the SIM out and tries to use it for long distance calls or to SMS other people for scamming purposes, the PIN would be the last line of defense in that case, but a SIM swap effectively removes the line from the one in your phone and places it on the one controlled by the attacker, so the PIN is moot. Now a PIN to protect your account and perform actions remotely is different and not a default with most carriers.

I know this might be controversial, but I run a business and a lot of what happens between personal and business on my desktop at home is mixed so I use Kaspersky for my AV. I know there’s a lot of controversy around the company, but I really think it’s just blown out of proportion due to having initial Russian origin 3:43

Honestly I haven’t used anti virus on my PCs since like the mid 00s. If you’re not torrenting or going to sketchy places on the web it’s not really enough of a risk going without to justify the endless harassment those programs give you.

Windows Defender used to be better when Microsoft first bought the tech/firm that made it, but it's been a hassle for mom with false positives. Also doesn't really assist users like the elderly who could use browsing and email protection, for example. Dad used to have a Bitdefender licence for him and mom, but mom prefers F-Secure for language options and support. Also comes with a VPN.

Fuck, if adware wasn't bad enough, it's literally spyware like Google Chrome. And browsers already have builtin link blocking in the form of Google Safe Browsing.

Without seeing this video, I can answer " Q&A: Is Antivirus Still Necessary? " Necessary? - yes Usefull - No. There is too much malware out there so many variety, and methods to evade antivirus so easy and common to deploy that they can't keep up. and they don't.

For Windows, Bitdefender is fantastic for catching things. It consistently comes up as #2 against the #1 which is Kaspersky. I would run Kaspersky on my Windows systems but I don't trust that it's Russian and has indirect ties to the KGB because of who works at Kaspersky. I've run Bitdefender for years because it just works to keep my family safe who aren't Tech-Savvy.

Every time I hear "antivirus" I get early 2000's flashbacks. People don't make malware like that anymore. Modern malware comes as features built into the products you consume. Get a threat model and some discipline to guard against it. That's all you need. Also use Linux or you're a hopeless clown.

iOS and Android are more SECURE than Linux, with the possible exception of ChromeOS. iOS/Android have sandboxed apps by default, whereas Linux you have to specifically choose flatpaks and then manually add a permissions management GUI. That said, iOS comes with Apple telemetry PRIVACY issues and many iOS and Android apps tend to have trackers that cause third party privacy issues. I fear that in the long term, Linux will move to flatpaks, and developers will start forcing trackers on users via the flatpaks just as they do in iOS and Android. The strategy is, we are a company that provides you an essential service; agree to download our software or you can't use us at all. It seems to be effective.
