When you are from outside Ho Chi Minh city and want to go HCMCity, you can refer to it as Saigon. Many people use Saigon in this case indeed. When you are living inside Ho Chi Minh City, you can ironically also say you want to go to Saigon. This refers to the city center with Ben Thanh Market and some regions surrounding it. The whole complication stems from historical reasons. Before the union, Saigon was the city name. After that, as WhatThePho said, its name was changed to HCM City and it has expanded slowly over time. It is currently quite big and the people living outside the city center normally refer to the center as Saigon as the original Saigon was much smaller than the City as a whole now.

This video is great! I really want to go back to Vietnam now! I wish I can take my mom back again. When we visited in 2012 we were able to find my mom's childhood home in Da Lat but we had poorly planned the trip so we couldn't see much or travel up to Hanoi where my mom was born. I will keep this video saved and refer back when we travel someday.

@ptiaptia7347

Rude, sometimes. Vietnamese do need to learn NEVER to ask how old you are, how much you make, how much this? how much that? I think schools and parents need to educate their children about this problem right from the beginning when they are young. And leaders need to address this super annoying problem, and especially keep the environment clean, take your OWN trash away.
@CentralHighland
@CentralHighland 3 жыл бұрын
@@ptiaptia7347 Vietnamee language has tons of personal pronouns to call each other, not just "you" and "me" like most languages on this planet, each of them are all base on age to call you, that's why we ask you your age. The "how much you make" are mostly still saying by the olds, the countryside people, not the Vietnamese youth (which is 35yo or less, the generation that have contacts with the outworld). So if you ask us to change it, it's actually happening, but you can't ask the people i'v mentioned above to change their habit, it's the generation mindset. Hope you understands it and accept the differences all around the world, not just Vietnamese things.
@CentralHighland
@CentralHighland 3 жыл бұрын
@@ptiaptia7347 about the trash thing, yes, it's bad and we need to fix it. But if you know about history, let's talk about the Europe in the past, it's a place of dust, rusty, disgusting thing like shit,... in every corner of Europe cities/towns. It took them hundreds of years to fix it, so give it a time. Btw cleaning our cities/ towns/ streets doesn't mean make the environment clean, the trash still there, and the cleaning companies still put them under our soils, ocean. The World waste produce ranking doesn't have Vietnam in the top 20, mean while US is the top 1, 2nd.UK, following that is 3rd.South Korea, 4th.Germany,5th.Thailand,6th.Malaysia, Argentina, Russia, Italy, Brazil. Cleaning environment doesn't mean clean you house and send the trash to the public, it takes a lot of steps, even the US can't do it, no country can do it.
@alancrane9762
@alancrane9762 3 жыл бұрын
@@ptiaptia7347 I agree with you on the trash and keeping environment clean. Rude is dependent on you. I don't care about age nor do I care about quantifying the cost of anything. If I don't want to to share it, I wouldn't. I am sure there are things I would consider rude in America, Australia, Germany, Mexico, Russia, Italy, China, etc. But who am I to tell people in other countries how they should educate their children. If you want others to respect your viewpoints, you should respect theirs.
@alancrane9762
@alancrane9762 3 жыл бұрын
@Ethan Hunt Oh, agree with you there. But it would depend on the area you visited. The folks living in the countryside are more direct as opposed to those in the big cities. The North and the Central are not so straight to the point as the Southerners. Maybe things have changed since I've been there, but it'd depend.

Historically, calling someone fat in Asia was a compliment - that meant you were rich and successful (hence, you could afford to eat a lot!) It was also a compliment to refer to the elderly as "Old Man" (ong gia) or "Old Woman" (ba gia). That meant you are wise.

I've been a frequent visitor of Vietnam because I have a business there. I used to go 12-14 times a year in HCMC from 2003 to 2020 (before covid). It's very safe - if catcalling is the worst you can expect, you're gonna be fine. The people are just LOVELY and FRIENDLY. Always ready to help and always with a ready smile! I really hope VN gets their vaccination program fast tracked so I can visit one of my favorite cities again soon. Thank you for the content! I was waiting the bus with my Vietnamese friend back in 2014 and she noticed me that i was mstanding in front of someone's house and told me not to stand there because it's considered rude... =) now the question is it considered rude for all Vietnamese people? Ohh the funny experience about on the other day was entering someone's house (lol accidentally becausw the built design is similar!!!) you know some houses in Vietnam are built side by side so basically they are sticked together.. My, friend saw me i was in someone's house so she immediately called me and told me to get out lol "haha she told me that she forget not to go inside someone's house" Super funny experience indeed!

Since this video by definition involves your answering questions people have asked you-- which is essentially your responding to their comments-- I think it would be appropriate for you to save some of your valued time by, well, reading all these comments but not responding to them (not even with hearts). That seems to me like a good and fair practice for anytime you add videos in this "Answering Your Questions" series. Please don't wear yourself out on maintenance. We're grateful enough just for the answers and the insights. We express thanks, by and large, and there's no need for you to take the time to thank us for thanking you.

@@WhatThePho Safety, pleasure, and convenience. It seems that just about all the questions fit into one of those three categories. Rare is the academic. And most of the querists are guys. They want to get the most bang for their buck or, that is to say, maximize their experience. It's appreciable that many of them seem to recognize that's what they're doing just talking to you. I, being a typical American in at least some ways, would probably be saying "to heck with what people seem to want to know" though, and would-- instead, lol-- be deciding what "I" think it would be best for them to know. It's kind of like when you go to the doctor and they ask you if you have any questions. My question is, "Are there any questions you know I should be asking?" In other words, just tell me what I need to know. LOL, I sound so aggressive. Hahahaha.

Worst I worried about in 12 years there was thieves and of course driving my motorbike with the way people drive in HCMC. I also drove from HCMC to Tay Ninh and Phan Thiet, It's nice to get out and see the country away from mass amounts of people. Grab, Be and Go Viet, but you haven't had a real Vietnamese experience if you're not finding an old school Xe Om. I'd also suggest if in cities tourists use Vinason or Mai Linh only if they take taxis. A lot of taxi services there, but these, if still there, would be the more reputable.

It's better to use simple words as "to work with" ... Khoai Lang Thang, instead using Collaborate . Me think ... ;-)))))))))

Chị Van. Speaking on transportation, I was wondering if you'd be willing to talk about the new subway system they just unveiled in Hanoi and if you think it will change transportation in Vietnam.

I have quite a few Vietnamese women I know on both Facebook and Instagram. Some live in Australia and some in America and one in Vietnam. I would guess 8 or 9 have a very similar face. They have a semi round or oval face, amazingly beautiful and the prettiest smiles I've seen,that includes you. To me,Vietnamese women are the most beautiful women on the planet. My opinion or it's my preference of course. Have a beautiful day and God bless you. 🥰❤
