Esther passed away in the fall of 2021. We do have a little more footage and we could definitely make a video showing off some of her work.

Hi T. J., I used to have the same problem: I never could find a frame I was completely satisfied with. That's why my husband and son started making their own about 5 years ago. Hello Esther, I was wondering... How do you do the fine quilting (I don't know what it's called) we see at 0:59 on the video between the flower and background grid quilting? Thank you in advance.

Hi David. That is something we teach in our Extended courses. It is called stippling and we use it to create. Textural contrast. In this case Esther used a very fine fishbone pattern.

Good morning Esther, from Melbourne Australia. Thank you so very very much for this video. I have never sewn, neither by machine nor hand (ok I’m a theatre nurse/emergency nurse so I’ve done my fair share of stitching) and I started hand sewing a quilt for my only granddaughter during our very strict lockdowns last year, which really helped me keep it together. I stupidly became more ambitious and the quilt became bigger. It is a storybook, family tree, busy quilt with many different sized blocks of landscapes and photos, and a panel on the reverse side. I’m going to start quilting it soon and my plan is a simple straight line quilting except maybe around appliqué of which there are many. Do you have any advice on how to keep the three layers together effectively, yet maintaining the integrity of the photos and still emphasising the landscapes, please? I don’t mind taking longer because our borders are shut and she lives in South Africa. My husband made me a quilting frame like you have in the video. I appreciate any advice you may have. If you have a 3 rail quilting frame then you should be all set. Even without basting. If you only have two rails you should definatwly baste the quilt before quilting. My tip for quulting pattern? Don't quilt in the ditch. It does not give the quilt anything and is the hardest place to quilt because of the many layers. I would recommend taking a photo (black and white would be preferable) print as large as you can and play around with different designs until you find something that feels right and accentuates the idea of your quilt.
