It's so sweet that your family learned sign to communicate with Zach before they officially met him!

The first time I tried to sign my name to my non-verbal autistic stepson (who wasn’t my stepson yet) when picking him up at his group home, you should have SEEN how excited he got….and he started signing like crazy….to which I panicked like anyone who’s barely eeking out a few words and people think they’re fluent… But it showed my stepson I cared…maybe that’s one reason why I passed the “test” and became his stepmom ;-). Kudos to you two!

Our Sign World, the reason I think Courtney speak when she gets upset is because when we get upset or become emotional we go back to our native tounge ( language ). Same thing happens to me. I am tri-lingual. English, Spanish and ASL. I tend to speak spanish, my first language, when I become upset. My opinion

I just found your channel and I love it! I took ASL for 3 years in high school, and then loved it so much that it motivated me to go to school to become a teacher for the deaf. I was a deaf-ed teacher for 6 years before quitting so that I could stay home when I had my first baby. Zach, you are SOOOOO blessed that your parents immersed themselves in learning sign language for you. In my 6 years of teaching deaf kids, only 2 kids had parents who could sign fluently....and that was because the parents were deaf themselves. The rest of my kids went home to houses where they relied on gestures and pointing to communicate with their parents, and it made me so sad. Courtney, you are also so blessed that your family is so supportive of your marriage to Zach that they also tried their best to learn sign language in order to communicate with him. You two are a beautiful couple, and I look forward to watching more of your videos!

I love the fact that teaching signing to babies, hearing or not, they can sign REALLY young, long before verbal speech capabilities. Look forward to seeing what your young'uns have to say at an early age (once you are ready!) Love your vlogs!

I am starting my first sign language class tomorrow! So excited! As a child, my mom taught me the alphabet, but that is the extent of my ability. I find it so odd that families would not at least learn alphabet and basic "hi how are you" type of things for their son in law. In my mind...I would love to be able to communicate at least on a basic level...spanish, english, asl. Any language. It makes me sad to think there are families that won't even learn to sign for their own children, but it happens. So glad I found your channel!

I left an on campus school and went to an online school when I was in college. The one thing that I missed the most was my ASL class. I felt like I was really getting somewhere and I could finally talk a little bit with my grandpa! If any hearing people are considering taking classes and really want to get into the deaf community, just do it! You learn so much and you get to meet so many new awesome people that you wouldn't have without it. My one teacher assigned to us to go to deaf community events to help immerse us into the community and become more comfortable with our signing. I know exactly what you're talking about with the deer in headlights thing. I felt the same way too. But I found that deaf people didnt care if I messed anything up. You just work together to figure out what you're saying and how to say (sign) it. It's only a barrier if you make it one. I appreciate your insight from a deaf person to a hearing person since we clearly have no clue what it's like, and especially if you dont know literally and figuratively how to ask. I think knowing that deaf people arent offended when a hearing person tries to sign (and sometimes fails) is encouraging to those who may not be familiar with the culture. Thank you for putting that information out there! I'm so glad I found this channel. You guys are awesome!

I am so glad that your video came up as a suggestion video on my news feed. I am hard of hearing and my boyfriend is completely deaf. We both use sign language daily for communication with each other and when we are at college. We both met at Gallaudet University. Then both of us decided to transferred back to the local university in his hometown. I haven’t found too many youtubers who sign using American Sign Language. I follow this one hearing/deaf couple; signduo I believe is the channel name, follow this one couple that’s sign. But both of them are hearing. The wife is an interpreter somewhere in California I believe, then there is Riki Pointer but she voices in most of her video (they all have captions; she is a big support of caption usage in all videos) but once in a while she will sign in asl. She is deaf as well but grew up oral. I also follow a few other people but they sign in a different language but have captions in English on their videos. My boyfriend and I sit-com sign all the time. It’s just how we grew up. My family doesn’t sign. But I have deaf friends who would come over all the time. And he is deaf but grew up singing and speaking both. His parents know a little bit of sign but they mostly just talk and he lips reads because he doesn’t like to wear his CI device. I try to tell him to learn to sign without speaking at the same time but he always seems to forget to do that. My boyfriend has dated mostly only hearing girls before he met me. He says he prefers to only date deaf or hard of hearing girls that know how to sign. I have dated both hearing and deaf before I met my boyfriend. I prefer to only date deaf or hard of hearing guys because they are easier to understand and more than likely they know how to sign. Honest after growing up basically hearing I prefer to sign as my main form of communication. But it’s harder to do that when my family and coworkers don’t sign.

i find it really cute how they both will add in signs the other may be stalling on to help them remember better! i haven't really seen that with many couples so its really sweet to see you two easily help each other out in such a simple way!

My friend took ASL classes at community college, she started teaching me so we could practice together. She recommended the website Lifeprint with Bill Vicars for beginners' solo study. All his video lessons are silent. The "order" of words and facial expressions felt so weird to me while thinking in English (no wonder it's tricky to speak and sign at the same time!), but thinking in Spanish helped. It's probably a good time to start learning again, there were a lot of deaf/signing kids in school growing up and it was always sad not being able to communicate with them.

Hi Guys! I recently started watching your vlogs. I'm hearing, I've dated two deaf guys. I've known sign for a while. I have been teaching a sign language class for two years, getting ready to start another one at my church. It makes me very happy that I'm able to understand you without reading the CC! I just stumbled upon your videos and it brought me back to when I used to sign for my brother who's autistic and used to sign when he was little. Y'all are making me wanna get back out there and learn it again 😀

I just found your channel a few days ago. I'm an ASL 1 student and I'm a freshman in high school. My ASL teacher is amazing and she has really inspired me to learn more. The class that I'm in is slow paced so I bought an ASL book and I'm taking online self paced courses too! My grandpa recently went into a nursing facility because he has cancer and needs 24 hour care and we go visit him at least twice a week. I always noticed another resident there that just sat in the corner and never talked or interacted with anyone which I thought was odd. One day someone handed him something and I thought I saw him sign thank you so I told my mom and she said I think he's Deaf. So I went up and asked him and he was! I'm nowhere close to fluent but every time I go I sign with him and he is so genuinely nice and patient with me because he knows I'm learning. I asked him if anyone there signed with him and he said no which just made me so upset and he doesn't have an interpreter so he has to rely on writing things down and lip reading which is not a good form of communication. It makes me so mad that nobody working there has thought to even just learn basic signs, to me that's just common decency but apparently it isn't to everyone.

Please keep making more videos! They really inspire me to be who I am as I have cochlear implants and have had them since I was 1 and almost 13! I was complete sign in the first few years of my life because it takes so long to program cochlear implants so I signed. I know very little now but I know some and I learn more every year when I go to lions camp!

My husband is hearing and I’m Deaf. I was born 3 months early too. I was born with some hearing I lost all of it by a very young age. My parents fight about education and cochlear implants. My dad want me in Deaf institute he has a Deaf cousin. My mom has no Deaf in family she wanted to be oral and have a CI. My Parents divorce I got CI and oral school. When i visit my dad he secret taught me ASL. I got older I lived with my dad and go to a hearing mainstream school with a Deaf school connected because there no institutes in a small town he live in. I do still use my CI only for my job and visiting my mom and her side of family.

I used to be hard of hearing but no one signed to me, then I had an operation when I was 6 and everything was suddenly soooo loud! So I have always been interested in sign language and love watching u guys. I wish I could understand it without the captions as I always miss the signs while quickly reading them! This is great! K used to volunteer in the tripod program when I was in high school here in Burbank. I went to college at college of southern idaho for their ASL program hoping to go into interpreting. But life took a turn. Little did I know that my son would be the one who pursued ASL and was accepted to Gallaudet university! He’s a junior now, and a chemistry major. I’m so proud of his asl fluency! I love your Instagram page and Madison is so adorable.

Just found your channel and I absolutely love it! I took a year of ASL last year and unfortunately had to stop after that one year due to having to fit other classes into my school schedule. I do miss being in the class but what I do now is watch videos and learn from my deaf friends! I think it’s such a beautiful language that more people should be open to learning. Totally getting hooked on your channel, you guys are so sweet! I'm currently taking sign language classes at university. I'm enjoying it so much and I already feel more able to communicate than I did with the 3 years of French in high school! That being said, with my current level, conversations with me would be very boring and textbook, lol! I hope to keep learning, but I'm really scared to try and talk to deaf people. Awesomeness, ASL is used I found when I was younger, working with special needs children that they learned quicker with asl and picture cards. It was an amazing learning experience for me. I had learned enough then that when I was on the phone or other times, I could sign to my kids and there was peace. Thank you for you both. Love and prayers ❤❤🙏

I just watched my first video of yours. I have been in love with sign language since I was in the 5th grade. Took some classes but couldn’t pursue it more. I’m not in a life situation right now to get involved in deaf community so I do use KZfaq to learn/practice. I have gotten a little better! Hello - just want to say how amazing you are. I too was born 3 months early at 27 weeks weighing 1ib 6 oz. I too was given emergency surfactant to open up my lungs. I am a triplet. Although I am not deaf, I self taught myself the ASL alphabet at age 8 and can spell out words. For me, it was the lungs that had the biggest impact. I have severe asthma and take 3 inhalers every day plus an immune injection. Although surfactant was so new, it saved my life. You have a beautiful family and baby girl, and I wish you all the best!

I have many new questions 1. You guys are literally the kindest family I've seen. 2. Have you had any communication differences in compared to your relationships with those who can hear ? Do to a lack or difficulty in translation. 2. Does your husband drive because I know that I us3 my hearing a lot when navigating. Are there any activities that are not suggested for the hard of hearing 3. What do you guys do? 4. How is it for your husband to be with a person who can hear vs. Someone who can not. I was an ECMO baby and lost some of my hearing that way. I got hearing aids at 4 and speech therapy but wasn’t taught sign language. Why? Because back then doctors believed if you learned to sign you wouldn’t do well in speech therapy and not want to talk so they never told my parents to teach me. I took some classes in college but honestly I wish I knew from a young age. I have a hard time learning a language. I’m trying to hopefully teach my son when he starts communicating

I don't know about anyone else, but I really appreciate the captions in your vlogs/videos. I'm not an absolute beginner, but I'm fairly close, and the captions help me know what you are saying, even if I can't always put what's in the captions together with what you're signing correctly yet.

Yes! Deer in the headlights! Me!! LOL! I unfortunately learned signed English first. I just took one semester. I wish I had learned ASL. Our public library is having free ASL classes right now. They are every week for about a month and a half. It's a beginner course. They also have an intermediate one too. I get very nervous talking to a deaf person because I don't want to mess up or look stupid. Many years ago I had a couple of deaf friends at work. They were very helpful even though back then I was using signed English. I love sign and I hope to get better at it and not be so nervous using it. Thanks guys for this informative video. Recently discovered your channel and I really enjoy it! My partner is partially deaf and so is his pop, Aunty, dad, one of his brothers and his sister. However as being partially deaf they don't sign but they do lip read a lot 😊

Hi guys, I enjoyed this. I just caught one of your videos for the first time yesterday. I learned a bit of sign language taking a class in our church taught by a man whose son is deaf. I have a voice disorder and cant speak very well and it seems to be getting worse. I wish I knew more sign and that my family did too!

I am hearing but told by an ear specialist I would eventually lose my hearing completely. It does seem as if I'm slowly getting worse, but I dunno....the doctor was kind of a jerk 😕. I have had a lifetime of ear infections due to eustachian tube dysfunction. I have one now. Anyway....I wanted to say that I think Court's family is SO SWEET to embrace all that they could about ASL & the culture. That had to have made you both feel so very loved & valued. I took one semester of ASL @ Community College & would go hang out at some local deaf club meetups. This was at the end of a very bad 20 year marriage. Now 6 years divorced, I'd like to go back to learning ASL and get involved in the culture more. I'm glad I found your channel. Thanks for sharing your lives.

This is so interesting. I actually have a hearing loss. The way we interpet things or understand them are different then for a person who doesn't have a hearing loss. But we are still blessed.

I took ASL for 2yrs in college, loved learning it but didn't get enough practice. So I've kind of lost my skills. I was so happy to find your vlogs. Amazing, I love your vlogs. I impressed with your parents who are willing sign language. I remember one day that my boyfriend met my parents for the first time and he was shock and speechless because my parents have communicated through sign language with him and me. He told me, I envy your parents who can sign language. He felt like comfortable with my parents for learning sign language although, I met his parents and yet he told them the first time he is dating me. His mother learned basic sign language but not mostly time. His young sister did learn basic sign language, and lastly, his father didn't learn sign language very much. He told me sometimes he wished that his family can learn sign language than oral all time. I hope one day, his family can learn sign language as much as they can because I believe they should include in sign language if I have our kids to learn sign language.

Ah wow, I was three months premature with under developed lungs as well. My heart stopped four times. I almost had to have my fingers and toes amputated and doctors didn't think I would last a week. I'm sorry to hear what happened to you but I'm so glad that you don't feel like you should be sad because you're deaf. You're still a beautiful person who's perfectly capable of everything a hearing person can do. I'm glad you guys decided to make a channel. I enjoy learning from you guys with every video and am inspired to take sign language classes! Much love 💕

Love your content! I have been trying to teach myself ASL off and on for awhile. Without paying over $1,000 to take ASL 1 at a local university, I haven’t found any options. It makes me sad our local government or state doesn’t offer ASL to the public. I looked into joining an ASL club but the only local one is for high school students. 😫 I want to be able to communicate with people that happen to be deaf. I’m going to keep using basic KZfaq videos and maybe, I’ll get better at it. Lol your story about the waiter made me laugh. At my last FT job, one of my coworkers on the floor was blind. Some people I worked with would try and slink into the walk or be super weird when he walked by. I would tell them, “he’s blind - he’s not deaf.. he can hear you shuffling and puffling around to hide”. My husband and I have also been asked if we are siblings. 🤨 so weird. 🤣

Honesty, at beginning, with mothers, I wasn’t sure whether you both were siblings or a couple but I picked up quickly that y’all married. It’s annoying, I reckon but amusing at the same time a bit. Gorgeous relationship, you two! Happily new subscriber of yours. I enjoyed immensely. TY!

I have a 2 1/2 yo hearing granddaughter who signs at times. She has a small vocabulary and is just now starting to speak, only one word at a time...no sentences. At 1 yo she did not speak at all and got so frustrated as we tried to guess what she wanted. That's when the rehab place started to teach her to sign. She had other physical problems that needed attention. They first thought she had had a stroke in utero or at birth. After an MRI they said she had CP...cerebral palsy.... She was adopted by my son and his wife shortly before she turned one. Now that she is starting to speak she signs less. She doesn't say hungry but signs it. She is now saying more, but occasionally signs it. The only sentence she says is " help me". She is very intelligent and understands everything we say. She's a very loving and happy child. I am very limited on signing only picking it up from from another child that was an acquaintance. This video has made me want to learn signing. I will see what's offered in my community.

Hi. I love your video. I am hearing, but I was a special education teacher. I went to Santa monica college and learnt ASL. I am physically handicapped. I worked in Los Angeles 8 years, learnt French sign language. I was born in Paris and lived there 16 years. Now, I live in Israel where my mother was born and died. I learnt israeli sign lanuage, and since 2011, volunteer at the "helen Keler house". I love sign language. I am waiting to see you again. Loved every minute of your signing. Thanks, David Barban

Great video. I am glad you don't use your voice while you film because I am trying to learn ASL and when people talk and sign it isn't the same, and it is confusing to me because I am trying to learn the proper structure and syntax for ASL. I live near the NC school of the Deaf so we have a lot of deaf people in and around our community and we have a deaf ministry at our church, but I still haven't built up the courage to attend an all deaf event. I think I am doing good learning and then I see deaf people communicating and using sign, and it makes me realize how basic I still am. I definitely can relate to the deer in headlights comment. Lol!

I've been signing for a year because I met a deaf classmate at school last year when we were in 6th grade. But this year me and him don't have any classes together. But I met a CODA and I'm learning more ASL now :)

It's true. I learned sign language mostly from integrating myself with the Deaf community, not from taking classes. A great comparison is that I also took 5 years of Spanish classes and never spoke Spanish outside of class and I am still not fluent in Spanish.

17:30 Haha I relate to that a little. I have a service dog so people immediately assume I am blind (I have autism and PTSD instead). Some people try to be inclusive then completely miss the mark. I usually just laugh and explain and educate. They are usually people who are really open and willing to learn, but don't know where to find the resources.

It’s important to point out to the hearing world that ASL in not English just put into gestures. It’s it’s own language. I think that maybe why hearing people think it’d be easy to just do both at the same time. But ASL has its own structure and grammatical rules just like any other language. Also I’ve been told it’s very disrespectful to voice around the deaf. It’s a sign of respect to not talk unless asked to interpret. I love your videos by the way. Very informative :)
