There is also another Joseph Campbell, a professor of Mythology, Which may account for his use of the W.

W. Joseph Campbell is a brilliant professor and writer, just as the other Joseph Campbell was brilliant in his way.

He keeps misapplying the definition of myth & his name is Joseph Campbell. Ironic. This is an informative talk even though I came for the great teacher.

Hmmm. I haven't finished listening. We ALL want the real Joseph Campbell, and that's why we stumbled upon this. I don't begrudge him his ideas. So far I don't hear any self-references, but you've heard it and I haven't (yet). So I'll keep listening, but I'll probably get bored and go back to the Real Joe. -jf

I guess the 'W' must stand for something terribly embarassing today, but it's a tradition that has probably been foisted on every first-born son of his mother's family for centuries. Normally when this happens it's a woman's name - Marion is a common one that men often inherit - but I can't think of any obvious or common W names. Wanda? Whitney? Maybe it's 'Whitey' and he's just embarassed :)
