Some people have a misconception of what a 2.25” exhaust system sounds like and hesitate to install one despite the fact that it will produce better torque results in the Q50 than a 2.5” system.

I'm glad I'm going with 2.5" for my custom setup. Now that I've heard both side by side, your 2.5" setup sounds very similar to how my coupe sounded with stock exhaust, but with basically the same resonators you have in the rear where my muffler was, just like you have. I'm really excited to see what my sedan sounds like with both resonators and mufflers replaced with the FlowFX resonators/mufflers.

Awesome review. Helped with my decision of going with a 2.25". For a daily driver, torque is vital in general (especially during winter) and you'll get the increase in HP anyways. Sound wise, the 2.5" sounds beefier but I don't drive a muscle car and would personally feel like a poser giving off that kind of sound. I am a sucker for blow backs and flames though, so the 2.25" manages that pretty well (:

The 2.25 in my opinion is better than the 2.5. The 2.5 has a little too much resonance making the frequencies clash. The 2.25 is more crisp and audible as opposed to jumbled together. If 2.35 was an option available, I feel like that would hit the sweet spot for me.

Hey man like your channel and a couple others for Q50 chat so just commenting. Anyways, thought I'd mention that for some or many owners that don't know that playing around with one's exhaust can play a big part in detuning one's car. A lot of the time people are negatively affecting their car's low end and mid range power output by going to larger diameter exhaust then what the engineers likely placed on the car. What's really important in a exhaust design is how well it aids in scavenging the cylinders and sometimes the thought of freeing up back pressure created by the stock exhausts which was a part of the equation the auto designers use to make the engine perform best for drivability can be adverse. I'll never forget the time i had my 88" Mustang 5.0 in high school. I had lots of friends and some not friends where we always raced our cars and talked shit afterwards if not before. My car was one of the fastest until i added a ford performance off-road H-pipe and black original Flow-Master mufflers. Killed my low end and mid range come to find out but the sound was pure intoxicating. Before the exhaust mods i could pull this guys 5.7 88-90 Vett but the next day after he would drive off from me and his vet was kept stock and another acquaintance had the 5.7 IROC. That's just one scenario and they are all not the same but that experience really opened my eyes. Louder doesnt usually make a car faster but can sure sound like it does. One time, a smarter car professional told me a equation when it comes to exhaust size for optimum performance per engine size and hp output/goals. I can't recall it now but certain smaller displacement motors like 6 cyl and 4 cyl motors don't need or benefit from larger diameter pipes unless really getting into the high 500-600hp and then 800-1000hp. For me, i will always be a function guy over visual appeal and sound. A simple, quick video i stumbled upon discussing exhaust design: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/espkZtWosa6ph2g.html

You must not have watched one of my older videos discussing this same thing! I got a lot of heat for it actually because a lot of a guys could not accept that a 2.25” exhaust on these cars would make more torque than a 2.5. I actually used the video you linked as a reference. The best systems have a perfect mix of flow and velocity. A big exhaust will flow very well, but the velocity will be crap. A small diameter exhaust will have super high velocity, but too much flow restriction is no good either. Scavenging is very important, but there was an excellent study done in a 370z that showed there is little to no scavenging impact after the cats/test pipes. He actually proved that a 2.25” test pipe will heals the best results, which is interesting because there are very few 2.25” options available. You may have seen that I proved my own argument making 333/284 with a 2.25” exhaust then making 333/276 switching to a 2.5”. I’ve said since the beginning that the 2.25 is the best option for this engine if staying NA and 2.5 is the absolute biggest I’d go. People have argued and laughed at me, but it is absolutely true. You certainly need a tune when switching up the exhaust system. You’ve probably heard some say they notice a loss in torque with just a muffler delete. I’ve made the point on numerous occasions that these cars are pretty dialed from the factory so making any little change could have a bigger impact than you’d expect.

@@SpeedCultureStudios I've had a few short discussions with you before and you have a good/better understandind and realstic reasoning then many. My ramblings are mostly not directed to you but rather then just raising discussion/awareness about something that may not cross others minds. There's a lot of design, super expensive test equipent, science and engineering needed that goes into properly designing the different systems in vehicles where an exhaust system is one of those. The Butt dyno can really lead people astray even thought we so want it to be real. At 1,000 to 1,500 for exhausts they are the items i try to not think about-get wrapped up in because of the cost and then 2-$300 install because what common person has the means like a lift and sometimes a welder. I'll never forget that dissappointment in the late 80's after buying the $800 Ford Motorsports off-road cattless h-pipe and seeing that i lost power for my application. It was huge as it was one piece back then where i had to go pick it up in a car. I was for sure that i was going to gap the others even easier because that combo on the 5.0 sounded so magical. No internet back then so i took a undereducated gamble and made a bad choice as far as a perfirmance gain. Better investment 30 years ago would have been to intall 3:55 -3:73 gear mod for cheaper or save some more cash and get Trickflow aluminum head package with roller rockers or a B-303 cam:)

I have a 1.75" system. Getting a custom cat back non res system done soon. Now looked at cheap systems and they are 2". Then looked at Cobra and Miltek and they are 2.5" for my car. The custom place said they will replace with original size but in stainless. Now I been reading that going bigger will give you a deeper tone but also can create power loss. So I think going from 1.75" to 2.5" is gonna be too much especially on a small car. But comparing the cheap small systems to the 2.5" Cobra, the Cobra sounded nice. So any advice on what I should do coz I want a nice sound but don't want to lose power but also don't want that buzz at higher revs that I seem to hear on cheaper more restricted systems. Thanks

What car are you planning to do the install on? Generally, when you increase exhaust diameter (if you don’t tune the car) you can lose some low end torque. Depending on the engine, going from a 1.75 to a 2.5 you might lose a few lbs of torque. Going to a 2.25 you may get a slight loss too, but you may not even feel it.

Cars N' Boba it’s impossible to feel 6-8 pounds of lost torque, especially when the tires spin so easily. Would it make a difference in a dig race if I had grip? Hard to say. For only gaining 1 hp though, losing any torque doesn’t make sense. But I’m happy with how it sounds so I don’t regret the change. I wanted the get the car sounding the way I wanted but also wanted to prove the point that going to a 2.5” exhaust is not always the best move. I think I made that clear-gained 1 hp and lost 8 lbs torque.

@@SpeedCultureStudios thanks for sharing that. Have you read this article about exhaust diameter on tq and hp on the VQ? motordyneengineering.com/exhaust-backpressure-and-scavenging/ I'm just trying to figure out how their results differ from yours. They suggest that the lost tq is due to widening piping before the Y pipe, while wider piping at the y pipe and beyond usually did not result in reduced tq. So trying to pin point if the wider diameter pipe found on hfc and tp is the cause? I don't deny your results, but trying to understand what caused the lost tq, so I can appropriately plan my exhaust layout.
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
Cars N' Boba Yes I have looked at it. Lost torque/power can be the result of a number of things in an exhaust system design. It can come down to a certain bend or even misaligned pipe. In my case, test pipes did not change so the loss in torque can be attributed to the larger diameter catback. There are other articles out there from magnaflow and others that discuss exhaust flow and diameter and how it relates to power and torque. It’s pretty common knowledge at this point that a larger diameter (to a point) can get you bigger hp numbers, but you eventually sacrifice torque. However, I do. Want to test 2.25” test pipes because I do believe I would gain that torque back with them. Fast intentions has 2.25” test pipes available but they are almost $400 if I remember right and I just can’t justify that.

Both sound good to me either way. It’s all what u perfer in tone and loudness. Usually bigger exhaust will perform best but in this case 2.5 is not gonna 2.25 will be better for this car for power. Having the happy medium size wil give the best for your power. if u like deep mean sound go 2.5. But if u Want louder exhaust go 2.25. I will tell u I have had 2.5 inch exhausts and I have even had some 13/4 inch exhausts. And I can tell u that if the setup is completely the same and same motor other than pipe size the smaller exhaust will be louder!

Overall volume doesn’t change much from 2.25 to 2.5 but the 2.25 has a slightly higher tone which might hit the ears different for sure. The larger diameter exhaust is actually better for power, however a smaller diameter exhaust will typically get you better torque numbers, which was the case for this setup. Dyno results for 2.25-333/285. Results with 2.5-334/276

Speed Culture Studios totally agree it’s not like your getting a huge difference in sound when your only talking a quarter inch But let me tell you have it all with 1 3/4 that’s louder lol. But however of course it’s not the most ideal place for performance so it’s all what a person wants you will be obnoxious but have less power for sure. Loudest usually doesn’t mix with performance lol.

I think they both sound great, but the 2.5 has a more refined sound IMO. I have a 2.25 custom set up with Berk HFC's, x pipe, vibrant, and Borla. I get slight rasp from 3-5k, so I thought about upsizing the midpipe to 2.5, then leaving the x-pipe and on back at 2.25. Do you know of any issues with a larger mid pipe compared to the rest of the catback? I would think the 2.5 midpipe would help reduce that rasp, but haven't found good evidence this will be the case.
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
The larger diameter will lengthen the waves a bit so the rasp might not be so prominent, but to be honest vibrant products did not eliminate rasp for me. I had vibrant resonators and then vibrant street power mufflers and always has a touch of rasp. Swapped to flowmaster FlowFX resonators and rasp went away.
@mr.anderson736

@@SpeedCultureStudios That's good to hear, I only have the slightest rasp so hopefully upsizing the midpipe will be enough. Otherwise I'll look into the Flowmaster resonators as a replacement. Vibrant has helped reduce the rasp in the past, but I noticed the biggest reduction when I installed the Magnaflow resonated X pipe. It gave it this nice burble on decel too - I highly recommend. Thanks for the quick response man! You probably have the nicest sounding 3.7 sedan I've heard.

I think the only way to really test this accurately is to use a identical exhaust set up like the 2.25in Fast intentions vs the 2.5in with same test pipes/cats. Theres so many variables here that i doubt the piping size is the dominating factor in the difference in sound. Im running isr headers with q300 which is 60mm. Im really considering switching to fast intentions 2.5in set up because the ISR's are 2.5in. ISR lth's with Invidia q300 does sound very nice though if you dont want it to loud, its very tasteful sounding. There is zero rasp or drone but i feel like the location of the x pipe and the mismatch piping diameter is hurting me a little bit on power.
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios Жыл бұрын
Right--I mentioned this for that very reason. The funny thing is that the tone between the two is very similar. I was surprised to see so many people say they could hear a difference. I would bet that if I played clips back to back without labels that no one could guess which was which. In person, the 2.25 setup had a slightly higher pitch--but only very slightly--which seems pretty obvious. Even with the exact same components, I think it's a reasonable expectation that the result would be the same--generally the larger the diameter the lower the tone.
@calebwright2849
@calebwright2849 Жыл бұрын
@@SpeedCultureStudios I agree, most probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference, including myself. Atleast through the video, in person i think i could. I actually got to here mine yesterday with the cat back disconnected for just a second with just the ISR long tube headers and it sounded super aggressive and deep. I was really surprised how good it sounded actually and it was shaking the ground it was so loud. Shop had it disconnected to put on my Z1 poly dif bushings and Z1 dif cover but I didn't realize they needed the special tool to remove it. Otherwise they have to drop the subframe to press it out which doubles the labor cost. Cheaper to buy the tool. Funny thing is the only reason I was having the shop do it was so I wouldnt have to buy the special tool to only be used once but oh well, live and learn I guess lol.

Any proof of the 2.25 having more torque or just butt dyno?
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Dyno proof. And it’s common knowledge really in the exhaust world. But I’ve talked about it in several videos one in particular I shared nearly a dozen dyno results. I also proved it with my own personal car. I thought I mentioned it in this video but with 2.25 I made 284lbs and with 2.5 I made 276. Nearly 10lb loss at 3k rpm but made the same amount of power. Obviously it depends on application, but for cars in the 300-350hp range, 2.25” exhaust is ideal with 2.5” being the max (dual exhaust). If you open it beyond that, you’ll really feel the loss in low end torque.
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
Rob K. Generally you lose torque through the power band. Torque is what gets the car moving. As it accelerates, torque drops off and hp takes over. With that being said, there is a weird little drop at 3k, but it’s insignificant and it jumped back to 277 which it carried all the way beyond 5k, which is where it intersected with the hp curve. The VQ is such a good engine-you might not get huge numbers but they will produce a very nice power/torque curve.
