Qala Explained - When Fame Becomes Fatal | Anvitaa Dutt | Tripti Dimri | Babil Khan
Written and Directed by Anvitaa Dutt, Qala which is streaming on Netflix is a hauntingly meditative approach to narrating the story of the Spotlight. Just like how we noticed a highly creative use of color on Bulbbul, this time the makers of Qala play with the direction of light by primarily using a dual-tone color palette. I was honestly at the loss for words after watching the film. But in this video, I will try my best to explain how the use of Spotlight acts like a metaphorical narrator of this story of Qala.
Qala is now streaming on Netflix.

Some tiny details I noticed were when Qala listened her mother singing she tried copying her hand gestures and that’s exactly what her mother did the first time she heard the boy. Another is her butterfly earring and she died in that butterfly graved saree. Loved how songs were parallel to the narrative. The black swan reference. This movie depicts strong emotions of carrying guilt, shame ,sexual abuse, sexism, lack of love, escapism ( how she completely gave into her world and everything around her went silent). This had strongest metaphor for mental imprisonment. How her innocence was killed by the ego driven ambitions (her mother) because the voice in her head called out to her for not being enough (jagat) and kept battling her past.

I've watched so many reviews and all of them just seem to miss the mark or reiterate the same thing. This isn't a movie about a artist striving for perfection and failing. It's a story about a child's desperation for any warmth and love. It's a true tragedy. I know people think it's too artistic without any actual plot but I totally disagree. Qala isn't trying to portray a story realistically it's trying to convey emotions. It's not a dialogue heavy film. And I absolutely love it for that. Not everything has to be a direct depiction of real life. A mother daughter relationship is a bitter one. Often mothers force the miserable life they had on their daughters. I would've loved to see a flashback from qala's mother's youth. Anyway the review was truly amazing. Really added more to the film.

Youre on point but I’m glad that they didn’t show the mother’s past because like you said her mother was projecting her own tragedy onto her daughter. The mother’s past is unneeded since we can already kind of guess what happened and that is it wasn’t anything good. I especially love how you said that this movie is conveying an emotion rather than a plot. This movie was truly disturbing but so beautiful in its special way.

Yeh I agree with this about it being about many themes especially a child’s need for love - but also sibling rivalry. When one sibling is appreciated more than another it can cause bitterness and hate between them even though it’s the parents fault. Also, my guess is that her mother did try be a singer and was used and abused by producers like she is and eventually couldn’t take it abs stopped. That’s why her mother says you know what kinda girls sing in movies? Implying that those girls slept with producers to get them singing roles. You can see she is used to doing this as well when she gives favours to that producer to get Jagan to be a star

@@biryanibeti3767 omg thank you so much. The day i watched this movie i stayed up all night reading reviews and getting frustrated by people who truly didn't understand what the movie was trying to portray. It's one thing to not like artistic movies it's another thing to not understand it. Looking back i kinda agree with you. A particular flash back scene wouldn't have done justice to the brutal coldness of the mother. Not letting the audience justify her actions was definitely a good choice.

@@Keepithalal i don't agree with you. She trained her daughter harshly to become a singer. If she didn't want her daughter to whore herself out she wouldn't have made that her prime objective in life. I believe, that she wanted her son to become a singer but when he died all that aspiration fell on qala's shoulder. Her mother never loved her, even for once. She saw her as a vessel to achieve her goal. And once she saw that she just wasn't good enough, she threw her aside and basically adopted jagan. Qala never gave a shit about becoming a singer. She just wanted to make her mother love her, recognise it.

@@donaldduck7942 yeh I know what you’re saying and I agree, the thing about the mother was just a theory of what the mother may have been through as she clearly is seen giving favours to that producer herself so she has obviously been through this before herself too. We will never know though because her past is not shown. Yeh I agree that her mother didn’t love her and was using her to fulfil her own aspiration to fill the void of her son, but when she saw Jagan as a replacement, then she pushed Qala aside again. It’s a strange one with how she names her daughter Qala meaning talent yet she continues to demean her and call her talentless her whole life. I’d love a deeper breakdown analysis and possible theories of all these things in a video. I remember when I watched Parasite I watched so many of these kinds of breakdown videos on KZfaq to decode the other meanings that were hidden in the story. There’s not so many that do this for Indian movies

Thank you so much for sharing your insights. I really like it. I'd like to add one thing: At the beginning of the film, the director shows that his unborn brother died because she was strong and consumed the food of the weak one. Her mother(might have) hated Qala for this reason. We can see the extended version of this plot in the rest of the movie. She uses mercury to damage his vocals. She didn't know that it was going to cost his life. 1. Consuming his brother's food led to his death. 2. Mercury thing caused life. (she didn't know that it was going to cost a life because of such small mistakes i.e consuming food and adding mercury.) I might be wrong. This is just my interpretation :)

You're partially right imo. This theme runs throughout the story as well, evident from the part in which her mother explains why Qala was rightfully called a koyal, amongst other instances.

Just let me know one thing is this movie oscar worthy? And if not what could be the possible reason?

This movie was unbearable to me. Felt like one of those bad film-school movies with all possible academic tropes used in amateurish manner...that never really comes together. One saving grace is it's on NF not theater - so it will not be judged for it's failure. That being said, Oscar is an award for artistic and technical merit for the American film industry... they extend it to a few international films to create an international image. I wonder why Indians look for validation from the West/whites.... What do you think the cause of deep seeded inferiority complex?

@@anandrmnn the thing is to judge the dependability of a movie we need something to be affiliated it with something prestigious…and in recent times film fare has lost its charm or maybe it is a sold show and to judge a movie in india we only have national award which is also ruining themselves by giving award to kangana ranaut of pretty average roles or let say giving best movie award to such film which wasn’t even released and was pretty bad enough I am talking about Marakar by priyadarshan and so to judge a movie’s credibility oscar is something that we always look upto as when the name pops up which movie is to be sent and we see those movie that why was it selected in the first place and will it make up to the nominations the academy team also has huge jury from all over the world and thats why their award is prestigious even though they are also losing their shine to promote themselves in foreign countries
