Whiplash was all about music...Qala is more of a social commentary on how women were/are treated in society and more importantly it talks about depression.

Qala was from a family of singers. Her father passed away early and wasnt around to pass onto legacy to kids. So her mother had to keep family heritage alive. She faced some gatekeeping because of her being a woman. So she wanted a son. She was pushing her initially, was telling her how she had work even harder to escape the abuse, but qala couldnt understand the reason behind her mother's contempt. When qala's mum saw jagan she realised she could just make him the inheritor. Maybe you are right as well... her mum was pushing her so she could come out better. But Qala chose the "easy way out". So the question is how would qala know when her mother never really talked about it with her. Apart from visuals, music was highlight of this movie. Definitely best songs of the year. The songs, singing style, instruments were all very fitting of the period, 1940's.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and pointing out some things I missed. Definitely was a solid movie for sure! Do you have a favorite scene in the film?

@@nathansreviews3377 ooh favourite scene... i guess the scene that hit me most was when qala's mum was holding her as a child. She seemed hapoy to see her kid but the moment the doctors explained how stronger baby sucks the nutrition from weaker baby, she looked at qala with such contempt. Her expression change was so obvious yet subtle.

No matter how hard she worked her mother wouldn't care. She wanted a male. In a way they were both victims of their times, but it was more cruel to qala because she was a child and had no one other than her mother.

Yes that actress (Anushka Sharma) was from PK. She has also produced Qala and Bulbbul

Bro her mom isn't pushing her. She just gives a hell lotta love, care, time and attention to Jagan over her biological daughter Qala. And that's what makes Qala take the only thing Jagan has, his voice.

The way women's mental illness is treated as hysteria was common back then. I think I first seen it in a novella called yellow wallpaper written around 19th century, I believe.'

So the whole lead in the milk thing making you lose your voice was mentioned before in the film. Also he was not her real brother, but the mother called him her brother as she had kind of adopted him as her own protege after hearing him sing.

This movie and bulbbul is a commentary on women in the society and the struggles they go through for being women. In this movie her mum always wanted a boy in her heart that's why she always had a little contempt towards qala because she killed her twin brother in the womb. Her mother still went with her because she wanted the grand title 'Pandit' for which ws only awarded to men at that time , she was jealous of her husband and felt bitter for that reason. She thought as long as she push her daughter hard she can fulfill her wish. But when she met jagan she saw her dead son in her and went to great extent to make him a star totally ignoring Qala. At the end of it all Qala just wanted her mother's love and attention she admired her very much, Jagan just wanted to sing and her mother just wanted the title she couldn't get herself, she restricted Qala to sing in music industry because female singers were seen as prostitutes at that time.

I mean, very late but here are some points: 1) Qala not only is the name of the main Character. But it also means art/skill. 2) Qala is from a family of singers. Their father ran the legacy until he passed away when his wife had to take it upon herself to continue the singing legacy. When she gave birth to Qala, at first she wanted her to become a maestro (not a courtesan) like her father. 3) But when she heard Jagan sing, she was mesmerised and decided to adopt him since he was an orphan. She had dreams for him to pass the legacy as his dead son who would eventually become the maestro and not Qala (This is why she mentions him as Qala's "brother"). Goes to show how much she cared about Qala's talents and her. 4) She wasn't pushing her in the end. She was prioritizing Jagan over her. Hence Qala felt envious and unwanted. 5) Jagan actually fell sick (perhaps because of the time he was outside with Qala in the snow). When he lost his voice, for some reason he was heartbroken leading to him committing suicide. 5) Qala was horrified to see this and would eventually get in the industry and secure a high position. Which is why she felt guilty as Jagan had great capabilities, and that people reminded her if Jagan were here he would be in her place. This made her feel she's snatching away his place and his dreams. 6) Mercury in a singer's mouth was mentioned earlier in this movie (When Qala put the thermometer into Jagan's mouth). And so it was believed that if a singer would consume mercury he would loose his voice forever.

Qala mixed mercury in Jagan's milk.... Mercury is quite poisonous for the human body.
