The 842 actually desginates the engines used on the model of the A380, the "8" is for the model of the plane, "4" is the designated number given for the engine type used and "2" is the series of the engine itself, so the A380-842 means Airbus A380 with Rolls-Royce Trent 972 engines, hence the A380-842 designation, correct me if Im wrong, Im just saying off the top of my head, but I think thats what 842 is for
