The 2022 Soccer World Cup in Qatar is hugely controversial. The allegations range from corruption in the awarding of the tournament to Qatar to harsh criticism of the host nation for its human rights record, and its World Cup carbon emissions.
Even as the World Cup gets underway, there’s been no letup in the criticism. The decision to hold the prestigious sports event in the middle of the desert, in the small Gulf state of Qatar, has been controversial from the start. FIFA officials are accused of accepting bribes to award hosting rights to Qatar. Qatar itself, meanwhile, is accused of exploiting hundreds of thousands of migrant workers to build its World Cup stadiums. Then there are the huge carbon emissions. The tournament was moved to winter to avoid Qatar’s summer temperatures of 50+ degrees Celsius. But even in November, the stadiums need significant air conditioning.
Journalist Christa Hofmann shows how the conservative Muslim emirate is looking to establish itself on the global stage with mega sports events like the World Cup. She visited the newly built stadiums and spoke with migrant workers - as well as Qatari officials, World Cup fan representatives, and Qatar and Middle East analysts.

And why does anybody need to be sanctioned? Isn’t it up to each country to decide what is right for them? Which rules they want to have in THEIR territory? Why should it be up to Germany or up to the Brits or US to decide what’s the best way to do things? It’s an overreach. If other countries want to change they will do it, from within, when it’s time. And I don’t think having two guys being able to get married is the greatest achievement of humanity. I don’t care how much flack I get for this but that’s what I think.

No. I am not even watching this world cup. I just feel for them because I happen to be a luckier Indian (or could be from any country) who had the privilege of education, got a PhD in science and worked in 4 different countries. Still working hard to make an impact in the world. Directly or indirectly, everyone wants to benefit from slavery (real slavery/corporate slavery). Well, nasty things like the old-style slavery has only been done by a certain groups of humans on earth. A lot of those humans dont do it anymore because they dont need it anymore. But dont forget, there were human zoos in Belgium just a few decades back. They killed millions in Congo just for money. So humans have not changed as such. Qatar is just directly exploiting because it can. It is just an unfortunate situation.

@Onni Hütten they didn't force them to come YES I agree with that but their situations did force them. But what the the Qatar government and their contractors did was made them hook in a trap that they can't escape . They were forced to do labours . They weren't allowed to change jobs if they do they would end up in jail. They weren't allowed on the residential area except for one place which was out the city area near to a sewage pond .The government needed to build the infrastructure projects within a limited time so they send scout to some of the countries which have unemployment even those workers have low literacy rates that was an advantage for the government . The contractors take these workers passport from them fearing that they would run away.and they would be given contract to sign when they 1st land in the country. The contract would be in Arabic so that ,so it's a disadvantage to the workers because they can't even understand a word. Even if they ask their superiors they could easily fool them .Just because u r born into an abusive family doesn't mean anyone can abuse u right ? If the government can spent so much money for useless things how come they can't provide them better living conditions, those workers put their blood and and sweat to into that many young healthy people died. Does ur family send u to some country to work and comeback in coffin? I think u have never seen the living conditions of people who are immigrant workers there. They attract tourists by showing those high rise buildings and developed areas but in reality those people who gave their everything and suffered end up getting paid like peanuts. While the government who did all those horrible things to the people after taking advantage of them chills in their luxurios mansions . It's not just Qatar other Gulf countries are on this too.

Here’s the thing with Qatar, just like any other countries, there’s inequality. And it all depends on your profession & passport. Those who hold Western passports would most likely get a very good salary package & would enjoy a work-life balance. But if you come from countries as mentioned in this documentary like India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, then prepare to become a slave. Even the domestic helpers from countries like Indonesia or Philippines is also at risk. However, if you arw from these countries but are professionals like doctor, engineers, you can also get a good life but not as much as Western people. An Asian Engineer, will not get the same salary as let’s say a Bristish engineer even if you are working in the same company & have the same position. Colonial mentality in the Middle East is rampant. But of course, the locals/Qataris are the ones who reap all the great benefits of their country.

Nice to see that Qatar is trying but Dubai was built with the same conditions for migrant workers and they are likely taking a page from their book as a newly wealthy nation in the gulf. They seem like genuinely good people but they are trying to make a modern world while still holding old world ideals and building on authoritarianism. If oil and gas is their only source of wealth, either the wells will run dry or the world will turn to different sources of energy. I'm sure they will hold onto a great deal of wealth still in the future though somehow and I hope they can remain a peaceful and sustainable nation while working towards equality. Haha and they will make more money a day than you will make a whole week. You should be thankful to be given the opportunity especially in a Muslim country. Your working and living conditions are much worse in your own country compared to Qatar. Did you expect Qatar to let each of you live in a mansion with belly dancers dancing for you every night?😂 not in your wildest dreams. Ask the millions of immigrants that come from the worst countries to America where they have to live when they move to the us. They live in the low-class ghetto where they are risking their life getting shot and robbed daily. And don’t forget how America developed this country especially in the modern era. They couldn’t have built this country from slavery, murder, and robbery. Same goes out with all western countries. Don’t forget the tens of trillions of dollars the US alone has in debt and same goes out for all the other western countries which are even worse when you are comparing GDP’s for them. Don’t be a sheep and most certainly don’t be a government pet.
