Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim to skip Gulf summit in Saudi Arabia

4 жыл бұрынQatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will not attend the Gulf summit in Riyadh on Tuesday, dampening hopes of reconciliation between Doha and a Saudi-led bloc. The emir named Prime Minister Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani to lead the Qatari delegation to the summit of the 40th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit, the official Qatar News Agency reported. Sheikh Abdullah will be the most senior Qatari official to attend the gathering of Gulf leaders since the emir attended a 2017 summit held in Kuwait, at which Riyadh and its allies sent more junior officials. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, and non-GCC Egypt cut diplomatic and economic ties with Qatar in June 2017 over allegations of supporting terrorism. Doha denies the accusations and says the boycott aims to impinge on its sovereignty. Majed al-AnsarI, a professor of political sociology at Qatar University, talks to Al Jazeera about the summit.

We all hope that Qatar goes back to its senses and stop the destructive action that it does to its neighboring countries. All Gulf countries are waiting for this to happen, including Qataris too. It all depends on the Qatari government to decide whether having a good relationship with their neighboring countries is a priority or strengthening the relationship with other destructive countries like Iran is a priority.

Saudi Arabia had always said this the diplomatic cut between them and Qatar is not significant to Saudi Arabia. They can continue living normally with this diplomatic cut, but Qatar is affected daily by this, to the point that Qatar had created a storyline in which they live under an embargo!

The Saudi foreign minister reported that Qatar must end its support for the Palestinian group Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood before ties with other Arab Gulf states could be restored. Saudi doesn’t think this is good. Qatar has to stop these policies so that it can contribute to stability in the Middle East.

Nobody wants to hurt Qatar. It has to choose whether it must move in one direction or another direction. Saudi and many gulf countries took this step with great pain so that it understands that these policies are not sustainable and must change.
