The World Cup is underway in Qatar, and it’s already contentious. Host Roy Wood Jr. sits down with Daily Show writer Joe Opio and sports journalist Grant Wahl to discuss how Qatar was awarded hosting privileges, the thousands of migrant workers who died while building whole cities and stadiums, accusations of bribery and corruption of FIFA officials throughout history, and the need for independent sports journalism on soccer’s biggest stage. #DailyShow #Podcast #BeyondTheScenes #WorldCup

We were lucky enough to speak to Grant Wahl at the beginning of the 2022 World Cup. His kindness, dedication and passion for soccer were all evident during our conversations. We are shocked and saddened to learn of his passing, and we extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Céline, his family, and friends.

Grant was murdered. "I can't prove it for a fact, I just know it's true". (Thank you Bill Maher). FIFA is run like a "Mafia organization" and we know what such organizations think about people like Grant who aren't afraid to tell the truth about their operations. "Snitches get stitches" or worse.

I watched this as a fan of the daily show. Even though I’m not much into soccer, I found the discussion fascinating and Grant’s passion of the sport inspiring. Recognizing his photo on the front page of the news was heartbreaking. As I learn more about him, I can’t imagine the sadness to those who knew him and followed his work. Even in this short video, it’s clear he was a remarkable man.

As someone that follows politics as much as some pals follow sports: it makes me wonder what would happen if these sports did not exist. Let me tell you about all the friends I have made comparing big sports to coliseum events of the past....
@raistormrs
@raistormrs Жыл бұрын
@@thebritons i can at least tell you, that things could possibly be worse now, because of one simple reason, the founding of the clubs and their reasons to exist, many many clubs in that sport did start out with the kicking of the ball as the secondary thing, as a means to a end, like, for example Celtic Glasgow, a club formed in 1887 to fight poverty, feed people and support the poor in the east end of Glasgow that have been ignored by the Government... this is something, many clubs did but this is a club, every fan of the sport actually, at least, has heard of. Workers rights movenemts were formed in and around football clubs, innitiatives of all kinds originated from clubs... generations have grown up with the ideals of those clubs and the stadiums are still in many countries the one place, people can talk freely, express their opinions, fight back. those Associations are trying for decades, to turn football into a soulless Franchise, but they keep failing and as long as the clubs are the basis of the sport, FIFA can't take politics out of Football.

My parents got stuck in Russia on 9/11. They were there touring and all flights were grounded so they were stuck there for about a week longer than they planned. The Russian people were very kind to my parents when they found out that my parents were Americans and at that point the world was in shock over what happened. People offered to host them. The stadium in Rio was only a ghost town for a brief period after the 2016 Olympics because of legal wrangling between the stadium's owner, operator, and the organizing committee for the Rio Olympics over responsibility for maintaining the grounds. It has nothing to do with the WC. Other than that, it is a 70,000+ seat stadium, originally built in 1950, that hosts Flamengo and Fluminense football clubs, major concerts, and international tournaments like Copa America.

As a professional, American woman, part of a small team of infrastructure specialists who spent two weeks in Qatar in 2011, this discussion is especially interesting. At the invitation of the Government of Qatar, we were there to review how the government and its many contractors and consultants were preparing for the World Cup and to advise it on how to improve the process. I could say a lot about my observations, but I won't go beyond saying that our advice and recommendations, based on an intensive series of interviews and investigations, were pretty much ignored. The Qataris wanted to do what they wanted to do, as fast as possible, never mind the financial or human cost. And no, I didn't need to "cover up" or be escorted by a man.

Agreed. Really, I wish he'd had the guts to just say _I go because it's the World Cup and I want to go_ , not this "oh, me being there going nuts while watching the big show is totally in service of the migrant workers!" It's not.

I'm a huge football fan. I used to play it too. But those thousands of migrant workers that died building stadiums in abhorrent conditions are haunting me. I can't watch games, drink cold beer and enjoy when I know what happened. It was slavery that build those stadiums. And its still hard - wait 4 years for the next ones but families of those workers they will wait in vain forever and forever for their loved ones to never return. 6500.

I remember Qatar - Doha.. I was a paratrooper back during 911. We had big plans to train there, during wartime, but we just couldn't. The cities go up like that WITHOUT A WORLD CUP, over there. I saw it with my own eyes in '02-'03. Slavery exists

Personally I haven't watched the world cup for a long time but I find it obscene that players are going to play on the bodies of 6500 people, I have even less respect for spectators that travel because they have a lot more choice in going than players that have built there careers and lives to achieve a world cup appearance.

Could have been interesting if journalists would have brought attention to the problems/corruption whilst the negotiation/election of the host was going on instead of being surprised now after the attention shifted and everyone is looking anyway. That would have been journalism with a real world impact…not saying that we should look away now.
