@christopherdean1326
@christopherdean1326 3 жыл бұрын
@@DrZaius3141 So how come they have only discovered this "lactose intolerant" thing within my lifetime? When I was growing up, and for hundreds of generations before me, everybody drank milk. An entire f*cking farming industry was built on the concept of people drinking milk! They used to give it away free to school kids. I did some casual work at a milk bottling/distribution plant and the staff canteen would give away milk to the workers. Nobody was "intolerant".
@RaichuKFM
@RaichuKFM 3 жыл бұрын
@@christopherdean1326 Lactose intolerance isn't new. In fact, lactose intolerance is older than lactose tolerance, if you can believe it. Adult production of lactase, an enzyme allowing for the digestion of milk, actually owes itself to a mutation (rather, several independent mutations in different populations all leading to the same effect); in most animals, lactase production ends after weaning. Most adult humans today are lactose intolerant, globally speaking. It's more common in European populations (and more common than intolerance mostly in northern and northwestern Europe) and populations descended from them, as well as some other cultures that historically drank a lot of milk; though some milk drinking cultures instead found ways of preparing milk that decreased the lactose present, instead of evolving widespread tolerance. Knowing about lactose intolerance isn't new, either: symptoms of it were described in Ancient Greece. The comparatively recent discovery is that lactose intolerance isn't a disorder, as it's actually lactose tolerance that's weird (though, obviously, handy). If I had to guess, it probably seems invented to you because people who were lactose intolerant either didn't figure out milk was the cause of their (often mild) gastrointestinal distress or they just ignored it. When you know a problem exists, it's easier to recognize that you have it. And when more viable alternatives exist, it's easier to avoid something that gives you problems, even mild ones. Lactose intolerance is a very well-known thing now, and lactose-free dairy products as well as plant-based "milk" are pretty common these days, whereas apparently it was something you never even heard of when and where you're talking about.

They also put the fresh fruit and veg near the entrance on purpose. If you have already put all the healthy stuff in you basket you are more likely to indulge on more expensive luxury items. Since reading up on it a bit, I am more determined than ever to go against predictions. that's how supermarkets are organised. Products pay more depending on their "real estate". So eye level shelves cost more, sale items can be anywhere but the ones who've paid more to the store get on the fronts of the aisles, brand name items are put in the middle of the aisle as it makes you walk past everything else to get to it and there fore you are more likely to add extra items to your shopping. Even the tiles on the floor have been specifically designed to keep you from looking down.

Doesn't this take years and years of research? I seem to remember my economics teacher said that Tesco tried to use their UK research in America, and they just didn't respond to the 2 for 1 offers and things because they have developed different habits. He may have been simplifying it, because he was explaining how companies can expand too much.

Yes! And when Aldi's came to America, it split in half. One half - the European model of 2-for-1 and great spot-buys of surplus and warehouse of groceries with no help in sight. And Trader Joe's with dozens of helpful young experts willing to talk for 5 minutes about cheese. They still have bargains but for more premium products that have been curated for price and quality. My store near me is a 24 hour store so it always had sales on Buy one get one free Roast (saving 15.00$ CDN) or 5.00$ for a 12 family pack of chicken legs... Most things I buy are on sale, I save about 100-150$ per month. I do shop most days (fresh fruits and veggies) so I am always in the store and see the sales.

Can say never bought anything I didn't want. Have bought things not planned to get - notably offer items on the bargains shelf but they're always things I'd enjoy. Recently, we wanted chicken and found it on the bargain shelf going cheep - but still wasn't as cheap pound for pound as a bigger fresher pack - so the 'bargain' stuff stayed there. What about the tricks - like when 2 packs half the size are cheaper than 1 pack a bigger size ? (i.e. weight the same). Best one recently were Oxo cubes. 24 were cheaper than 12.

Seems they are oversimplifying the ideas and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the research that Gruen Transfer is based on is either widely misrepresented, very limited in it’s scope or just unable to be replicated. Based on my own observations I'd imagine that whilst there men from some backgrounds light be easily lead to buy more expensive products, there are other demographics that are extremely frugal and see it as a matter of fact that the cheap products are almost always just as good as the expensive ones. As someone who runs a sharehouse that primarily has male tenants, I see the groceries from a wide variety of males from different backgrounds and I can't determine a clear pattern. If you did the research but it had a wealth and/or cultural bias I can see how you might find a discernible pattern.

I call BS on the ‘men buy more expensive stuff’ claim. In my experience, it’s the men being tight and telling wives to get the supermarket brand as it’s just as good. Same reason men’s products like razors are cheaper than women’s ones: we won’t pay it, but they will.

First, the Gruen Transfer has nothing to do with store shopping, low and high height male and female, that isn't even close to what the Gruen Transfer is. The Gruen Transfer/effect is when you go into malls and the interior stores are fancy, pleasing, appealing, flashy, etc to entice you to buy and spend money over what you came in for. You come in for socks but leave with socks, shoes, shirts, and what ever. The flash is to cause you to forget your initial basic shopping intent and instead look about at other stuff. A well designed mall interior to get you to come, and get you to stay. The longer you stayed, the more you tend to buy. Has nothing to do with products at certain heights or other methods discussed on this program. Don't know who gets their information, but not even remotely correct. The advertising of items at "bulls eye level", cheaper lower level and more expensive top shelf developed over time in stores, had nothing to do with Gruen.
