The meaning of the Irish flag;Its three equal stripes illustrate the Irish political landscape as accurately today as in 1848, the year the flag was first unfurled. orange - standing for Irish Protestants. green - signifying Irish Catholics and the republican cause. white - representing the hope for peace between them.

The ambiguity probably derives from the fact that "glas" was once the Irish word for both "green" and "blue". "uaine" means green and "gorm" means blue, but glas once meant either. In Welsh and Breton, glas still means either green or blue.

After some research, it seems "glas" at one point meant light blue, which makes sense as many cultures, like in Russia, see light blue as a different colour to dark blue and green, with a 13 basic colour spectrem. (English is 12)

Note that there are multiple interpretations of Old Croghan Man's death, and the reasons for his nipples being cut off could are many. Torture is the most believed one, whilst others believe Old Croghan Man to actually be a king who was killed, and thus his nipple's were cut off to prevent anyone showing loyalty.
@ad1170
@ad1170 6 жыл бұрын
St patrick noted in his confessio when he needed to escape ireland. He was required to suck the nipples of the crewmen of a boat that where going to ship him across to europe. He refused and for that they where going leave him behind till they allowed him on anyway. This came from patricks confessio. Sucking the nipples may have been a trust ritual. The culture of ireland at that time could be very literal. If you look at any statues of that time one key feature is their abnormally big heads. As it is believed that for these people (who obviously had limited biological knowledge) figured heads where the most important part of the body. Another case is their worship of oak trees as they believed that the oak connected the afterlife (roots) to life above ground. So taking that nipples probably where cultural significant maybe because of breastfeeding mothers to children. That for men to do it to men meant establishing a trusting bond like mother to child. Which if someone where to king that bond would be vital. Just a thought.

Historically blue and green were often considered the same. In Japanese the word for green is quite new too. The Japanese word for blue is Ao or Aoi and the word for green is Midori but when describing a green traffic light you call it an Aoi traffic light. Lots of languages historically had the same word for both blue and green.

There's absolutely zero evidence that people would ever fight it out to be King in Ireland, no written record, nothing. Some historians seem to have a vivid imagination when it comes to piecing together the past. Ancient Ireland was very class oriented, there was the Royal or ruling class then the Druidic class which was similar to the Brahmin caste of India with subdivisions within it, plus the 'regular' citizens and all these classes were strictly hereditary. Kingdoms fought with each other for dominance but there wasn't a free-for-all among the people to see who would be king. Usual bullshit from the British history books.

It represents the evergreen nature of christ. The Irish flag has the Green of Catholicism and the Orange of Protestantism with white between to represent peace between Catholics and Protestants.

JD1010101110 You're right that Protestantism is related to William of Orange. But green is related to Irish nationalism, gaelic tradition and the republican revolution, not religion. There are protestant nationalists and catholic unionists, there were just fewer of them. Look up Wolfe Tone and the United Irishmen, they used green in the 1798 rebellion.

JD1010101110 Green does not represent catholicism. That is plain stupidity. It represents Irish nationalism. Guess who invented Irish nationalism and who most of the original leaders of Irish nationalism were? Protestants. There's nothing more ridiculous than someone claiming to know what they are talking about to someone who actually does know.

If everyone thinks of green when they think of Ireland, surely that makes it Ireland's colour. Otherwise, you might as well say that English isn't our national language because before English everyone spoke Saxon.

Pretty much explains all the issues of Ireland. On the teat. I would have enjoyed this titbit of info to harass my adopted Irish/Scotch mudder. Was great fun to ask her if the Irish side was Black Irish. A week later she said, NO rather emphatically. Grandfather was a Druggist and well educated. Hence could not be a criminal. To which I had even further chuckle at my dear sweet mudder. To her dying day she was vinegar and oil. Only happy when shaken.
