Chinese kungfu videotapes from the 1980s have this nature of presentation and quality of resolution. This one almost feels like an intended primer for the military. Today, on YT, you get 'masters' that talk, and talk, and talk, and talk,...and then demonstrate one application. 🙄

Agreeing with others that this is not qin na, but there are some solid techniques in here nonetheless. Reminds me of some of the old manuals I used to study. I've seen some movements here that I always thought were impractical when I saw them in the manuscripts. I now see that I was visualizing them incorrectly. Often what I thought represented a strike was actually a grab or throw. I think that's a common mistake when viewing Chinese martial arts in solo form.

This is actually an excellent video. No flowery BS, straight forward and effective moves. I've substituted the backfist for a hammer fist. Also the video is self-explanatory so I don't need subtitles because it is so clearly shown.
@OzVegan4 жыл бұрын
@Ryan Hampton So much depends on the practitioner I guess. Chuck Norris made good use of the spinning backfist, I've seen a few MMA fights with a spinning backfist used effectively and one real fight where a version of it was used as a KO. As to the success rate of its usage percentage-wise, I dunno. I mean, you take your eyes off of your opponent for a split second so I'm no fan of that.
@OzVegan4 жыл бұрын
@Ryan Hampton I can see the boxing style within it. I find it interesting that he has a almost hunched over stance to narrow access to body targets, whereas some proven martial artists I've trained with from the US and Phillipines always recommended a very upright posture with straight back.

Nice collection of techniques, methodically clear, but probably for intermediate or advanced levels. With all respects to Mr. Boris Chen, I would have started with beginners, to show them their minimum chances using simple versions of the combos´s, say, using leg s stops with legs, mirror palm blocks against hands, already seen there. What I liked was sidesteping against kicks which for beginners scould have beed followed by running away or puling or throwing the opponentt out of balance etc. Showing the levels in 1-20 minutes would also help them enjoying some success already at their own level. Many success and best regards. Paul, 68, retired instructor of sports Karate. .

Old video, it is good reminder that most Asian martial arts came from China. Yet what you mostly see is Hollywood's version of Chinese martial arts and other more modern styles and sports attempt to claim everything like they created these techniques. Many moves the Japanese borrow from and the Brazilians even came later by learning from the Japanese to claim their own version. Not that it's bad but its basic history.
@Dwinna14 жыл бұрын
That is partly thnx to Mao it think. Because he didnt want the People to practice martial arts. So he removed the martial from the arts and it became just that an art(with the acrobatics). That is how modern wushu was born.

It looks pretty goofy in the demo, but recognize they're out distance (too far away) for the sake of a clear demo A teacher of mine pulled off a similar spinning backfist in during sticky hands, when my instructor did it to me he stepped in such that the leading shoulder deflected my strike and the elbow force my offhand to deflect, or take an elbow to the solar plexis. It was very much like a head slip to an elbow frame in boxing. The spin then controlled my guard and gave him a dominant angle for the backfist.
