I really have to get back into playing with tracks during this awful covid surge (I'm not brave enough to go play gigs in intimate settings at this time. Waiting for the outdoor season to return). I guess this week would also be a good time for me to get back to work with my Yamaha QY sequencer and create some of my own. The nice thing with that is, I can create them and play them back at various tempos. I found in the past that playing exercises to tracks in various styles and tempos can really help with mastering certain conceptual things and various permutations as it forces me to make sure everything is sitting right square on the grid, unless, of course...I intentionally play loose off the grid.

Go for it! Definitely make some new new sequences using your Yamaha QY. Staying accountable for the grid of the groove is so important. Thanks for watching and have fun!

Wonderful Quincy! I'm guessing the tracks are MP3 so you play them from a computer? Then plug the computer into a PA system? I'm still messing with the set up. Thank you for all you've given this year and have a great and happy new year! Rita

Hey, Q. I’m on the intermediate level and really want to develop my Jazz drumming. Can you recommend a few albums that I could play along too that aren’t too burning fast? I can comfortably walk the dog at 220bpm as of now. Thank you!

Quincy. Do you recommend your students to learn traditional grip? Is there an advantage? Happy New Year!
@drumqtips

I recommend it for learning how to play jazz for sure. It helps students feel like they are playing jazz and not rock or funk.

I think it’s good to be able to play either way. It could be an advantage when playing with different musicians. Bill Stewart plays match grip and he definitely sounds like a jazz drummer to me. Either way is fine as long as you’re good at it.
@drumqtips
@drumqtips 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely Chucky! You can certainly play jazz with either grip but when I teach students here at UNT, I have them switch over to traditional if they’re not already playing it so they start to understand the nuances that you can play with in the left hand for Jazz. Otherwise, I find that students think and play the same way they play when they’re playing louder styles of music like fuck a rock with match grip. It’s more of a mindset thing than a technical thing I’ve found. But after those early stages of learning jazz, I think drummers should go with with it which ever grip feels most comfortable to them for sure. Being able to play with both grips is definitely helpful for various reasons. You can hear my full take on this topic in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7KYd5OpzMW2cps.html. Cheers!
