This is the kind of drum videos we should all drummers appreciate 💯👏🏼 I've learned so much from Quincy's chart reading tips, as I have from Steve Houghton's books or Steve Fydik's books. We drummers are really the conductor in a band, and at the same time we're there to support the other musicians. We're are not drummers who only play drum solos inside our practice rooms

Congrats and thanks: You answered about all the questions I had about reading/interpreting drum charts in one single video, plus you shared a lot of wisdom, e.g. about preparing, leading, and listening to the fellow musicians and the overall sound.

Thanks Quincy very helpful . You nailed a lot here . Sorry to add but I love this re your comment on the conducter “ The greatest contribution jazz has made in music has been to replace the role of the conductor with a member of the ensemble who instead of waving his arms to keep time and convey mood , is an active member of the musical statement. That person is the drummer “ Elvin Jones ( quoted in Tommy Igoes book.

In a KZfaq world full of teachers (that are 98% hacks). Most of them can’t read a chart themselves. Quincy Davis is the real deal! The proof is in how clearly he just explained big band charts in 25 minutes - and he’s teaching at one of the finest music schools in the world. Everyone from Norah Jones to Snarky Puppy to Ronnie Tutt studied at UNT! I think it’s the first university where a Jazz degree was ever offered! best drum educator you can find on KZfaq.

I’ve just found your channel recently and may I say you have been extremely helpful. I didn’t realize you were local to me. I’m working on auditioning for my high school jazz band at Plano Senior high. You might of heard of it I wouldn’t be surprised if a few of my percussion staff knew you many of them graduated from UNT.

Belated happy birthday Quincy I love Nina too!!! Feel very fortunate to have seen her twice an amazing original and a truly natural and unique talent...Great lesson and superbly informative as are all of your channel teachings this one not for me as I have never learnt to read. And I'll be honest have little interest in doing which is not taking anything away from people who do read or want to read and I have nothing but admiration for guys and girls that do it's just not for me...

Great lesson on reading charts Quincy. Can you do a video where you break down the Hemiola. I am not understanding how you count that. My Dad use to say, if you cant count it, you cant play it! Thanks! Richie Rich

Love your videos, Quincy. So honest and full of good info. I am very interested in a video on READING RYTHMS, as you mentioned. Have been able to get by doing jazz standards and such with smaller amateur groups. Now practicing with a larger combo and trying to play arrangements. I can only fake so much and I easily get lost in the chart, so missing a lot of rests, accents, solos, etc. Total freakin' disaster. Can you recommend an online course? Thanks and hope to see doing this for a long time.

mallets... what is the agenda for which, kids sign up for drum lessons.... they're given a pad and bored with method books.... and eventually, they simply have to learn about the bells. And falsely, they are maybe told that they are a genius at the bells and consigned to playing only bell parts....
WHY DON'T DRUM TEACHERS SHOW THEIR STUDENTS HOW TO DO THIS? 🤷🏾‍♂️
