Quake II (PS1) gameplay 4K 60FPS in Duckstation emulator

Back then, nobody believed that it was possible - to get Quake II on PlayStation 1 (PS1). In Duckstation emulator with widescreen hack it looks almost like a PC version. Of course, because of the console limitations, PC version is far superior than PS1 version and that's pretty obvious from the start.
Many levels were cut out and those that are in the game were slightly altered (or just plainly simplified) for the game to be able to run on PlayStation. Also, many loading screens! Too many for my taste. But, graphics are phenomenal, FPS is holding very well and this version of the game offers a different boss battle latter in the game (not in this footage). Let's not forget the multiplayer mode with up to 4 player split screen - so much fun!
I wish that I could blast Sonic Mayhem soundtrack, but you know the rules. Copyright and stuff. Too bad because it's so great and it pumps you up to do some crazy shenanigans!

Very nice lighting. The textures somehow look better than in PC version.

That's the magic of Duckstation. Maybe the textures are indeed better that PC version. Its been awhile since I've played it. I mean, PS1 version of the game came 2 years later so they might tweak some stuff

15:13 with this instant animation it looks like laser, rather that parasite insturment.

This game looks amazing on ps1. Not even a fan of PlayStation but i gotta give them credit for that and the devs for this port

@@McGeezle I don't think so, rather you are the most ignorant here... I never mentioned controllers but if so you can easily adapt keyboard and mouse. In any case, there would be nothing wrong with playing it with a PS1 controller, there was also a mouse for the console.

@@Crystallums of course there would be something wrong with using a ps1 controller. It's fucking Quake. It is literally THE mouse & keyboard game. Why do you prefer this shitty port?

For some reason in this port the crosshair is slighty misplaced, which annoys me a bit.

14:27 Dogs are way easier on PS1 than PC version, even with hardest difficulty.

Looks very beautiful with the nice corona lights (was not on the PC version) but the textures are very bad done because of the repetitive use of it. Also the backgrounds are gone. But I didn't remember that there was lineair filtering in Quake 2 for the PS1 cause I saw a demo in a game expo in the nineties. This was more acurate : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ntR3oKpm073Xk58.html The movement with controller is not my thing cause the lack of strafing. But anyways thnks for the cool walkthrough ! I played it on my Pentium 100; 32MB RAM and 3DFX Voodoo 1 - 4 MB in 640x480x16-bit colors Later on with an AGP card with much better textures and colors. And much much later on I played the Quake2XP version that was better than the RTX version in my opinion.

Quake 2 I think on PC recommended 16 MB system RAM + VRAM. PS1 has only 2 megabytes !! system RAM and 1MB VRAM. This is an extremely small amount for the needs of Quake 2 and it's a wonder how well they run it anyway !

I recently played quake 1(on a linux-pc using quakespasm engine) with a gamepad... I cannot understand why all consoles make narrow Field Of View(it is somewhere around 60-70 degrees). They should give you wide FOV angle (90-110) and make controls less sensitive, and the gameplay is soso more engaging and easier to use. Because you need less to look around and your aiming is more accurate.

I guess its because aspect ratio of the CRT TVs back then was 4:3. Maybe thats why FOV was narrower. Im using widescreen hack so it might be awkward to be precise enough. And also, I haven't played Quake II on gamepad in years so I kinda suck heh. Thank you for the comment :D
