Part 50 - Looking underneath in preparation for the MOT. Sorting out the beautiful wheel trims and polishing the wooden door caps. Another 3 days spent working on the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit.
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 50 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
If you have an interesting 'non returnable' item for a 'trying to fix' video then my PO box is as follows. Please only use if you are from the UK and using Royal Mail.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

I'm 99% sure its your battery giving you issues. Definitely time to get a new one. The problem with with letting a battery go flat is each time you do it slightly kills it permanently each time, the lower the worse. So once you got a new one keep on top of it so you don't kill your new one. I used one of those small 10w solar panels in the dash when I'm not driving, keeps my battery just charged enough to always be able to start it. Wheels and doors are lookin good
@Mymatevince
@Mymatevince 5 ай бұрын
Do you plug in the solar panel via a 12v cigarette lighter socket? I have purchased a new Varta battery along with some other bits so next time I am on it, I'm looking forward to seeing if it will start first time like it used to (I hope so)👍👍👍
@JessicaFEREM
@JessicaFEREM 5 ай бұрын
@@Mymatevince yea that should work. as long as the panel is in the sun. just make sure that the lighter socket is connected when the car is shut off. worst case scenario you can use clip leads directly on the battery terminals, or run a cable through the firewall going straight to the battery, but ofc best to make sure that's fused and everything. the OBD2 port would be preferrable but ofc this car probably doesn't have one. you may be able to run it through the fuse panel maybe, but make sure to read up on that to find the right point to power from.

Great job as always. When spraying you should use sweeping motion. Depress and release the spray nozzle only while moving. Also, I wouldn’t use a hard block for fine sanding those wheel trims. Due to the thin paint and imperfections. Wet and dry with paper alone, so you can feel the surface (only light pressure) to level the paint surface 👍🏼

There is couple main things to check while car is not starting: 1. air channel (from air filter to manfold), 2. fuel line or injectors (fuel filter, clog injectors), 3. spark or coil, and 4. compression (with tool after removing spark plug) 5. timing (there should be marks on timing sprokets, gears, pullet etc. They must line up) 6. Weak or broken Battery Also Richard is a good fan, great reference poster before paint job! Well done Canada!

Vince, I just noticed that your gear seletor on your steering column is not lit. Also when you use spray paint, you should always turn the spray can upside down and stay until there is no more paint coming out of it. That will make sure that you will be able to use it again and that the nozzle won't be clogged.😊😊

Hey my mate Vince, good job on all those things you did. Your Rolls is coming along. Just one technical tip, when you are spray painting you should not tough the freshly painted surface with your bare hands in between the coats. Every time you touch the part you deposit oils and grease from your fingers and that will cause adhesion issues. Keep on keeping on. It is fun watching you

Hi from Sydney, Australia, the 2 x "black" ring hubcaps are the really early series 1 Silver Shadow hubcaps, basically 6.2 litre cars with the really tall rear amber indicator lights with only red taillights below (no clear reverse lights) and the self levelling front suspension. Later the track was widened, the self-level was deleted at front, the rear light clusters received the third lens the clear reversing one, the bigger 6.75 litre engine and the hubcaps with the cut outs, the venting to allow disc brake heat soak to cool/breathe more freely.

Sulfur will build up on the plates in a lead acid battery and this reduces the chemical reaction. The electrolyte will also degrade or even evaporate. If the battery is serviceable, you can top it up with distilled water. Then it needs a high charge (a gassing charge, make the electrolyte bubble and boil) and the sulfur will be dislodged. Then you neend to drain the battery (flush the the sediment out of the battery) and put new electrolyte in and give it a full charge. If the plates are in good condition, the battery should last for more years.

30:19 I use Zona 37-948 3M Wet/Dry Polishing Paper in luthier (guitar building) work. It’s super fine polishing paper from 600-12000 grit. Then use an optical polish with fine foam pad on the buffer and it will shine like a mirror. Can also be used on any clear coat repair in the body. Edit: yes, 12,000 grit. It doesn’t even feel like sandpaper, but it really sets that shine off.

post script from Sydney, Australia, RE the smaller and extruded hubcap. this also an early cap, from a Silver Shadow as years ago there were no bonded sticky tape like backing on the wheel weights, so the extruded cap was to allow a big lead wheel weight to clip onto the outer wheel flange, BUT , still allow the hubcap to clip on and not fall off. I have several American type cars that were built in Sydney at the Ford Homebush plant and the GM Holden plant in Pagewood as Factory Right-Hand drive cars, (built from car kit sets sent from America) all have 15"-wheel rims and all but one with alloy wheels have the hubcaps like this that are extruded from the wheel.

A lot of people are saying about keeping it on a trickle charger to keep the battery topped up. It's a good idea but not always practical, I use a Battery Brain it fixes to your your cars positive terminal. If your battery falls below 11.8 volts, which is what is needed to start a car rather than actually 12 volts. It disconnects your battery and stops it being drained flat (you can request to have a different voltage cut off). You get a fob with 2 buttons one is a manual cut off, the other to reconnect the battery. The main reason for batteries going flat in cars from around the 80's is there is electricals that are still drawing power when the ignition is switched off. Once the battery is disconnected it will stay at it's current level for a long time. I have one on my 1998 Daimler 8 (Jag X308) and can leave it for months, walk up to it press to reconnect the battery and it will start no problems. I have mine set to 12volts just for an extra boost. Compare that with my Hillman Avenger from the 70's which I can leave for 6 or more months and start it without a Battery Brain, as there is no electrical draw with the ignition switched off. After the 80's with things like Radios, especially modern ones which have a constant live and ignition controlled live, clocks, ecu's etc which always draw a little power no matter if ignition is on or off. With a new battery and a battery brain I am sure you will be sorted, sorry for long comment but hope it helps.

A new battery would be nice. You should also look into getting a trickle charger if you're going to have it sit between running it. I have a lot of good experience with NOCO products if they are available over there. Their genius one would be perfect for this application. Pretty cheap and also had a basic desulfication mode.

when i change a break pipe i usually use either copper grease or clear grease to help protect them , some MOT stations will give you an advisery as the pipes are covered in grease , but its not usually a failer as they can wipe it off to check the pipe .some times the tester will come and ask if you have had the pipes changed and not even put it on the sheet , or just mention it to the tester you have done it to help protect them. as for failing it on painted pipes cars have metal painted break pipes from the factory , the fuel pipe on some cars are painted too but usually made of a lower corroding alloy.

Vince, If you want to make running feel more competitive, then try doing a parkrun. There is bound to be one near you. You’re really only competing against yourself, on a time basis, but there are plenty of other runners (and walkers), so you can get that competitive feel to push yourself further. It’s a good community feel to it, and lots of people to socialise with; quite refreshing especially if you work alone at home all week. The NHS couch to 5k app is quite good, with encouragement whilst you get up to 5k, especially if you already listen to audiobooks when exercising. The parkruns are all very inclusive, for all ages and abilities, whether running, walking or whatever. Depending on the course, some are suitable for wheel chairs or buggies. They are also free to attend. Just mentioning as have changed my view on running; previously expressed similar views to you, and had stopped playing racket sports after work following a change in circumstances. Also, really enjoying this series, excited to see results of MOT, so hurry up and book it in.

If "painting" the lines is an MOT fail because they can't see the condition, then a clear coat would probably make the most sense. Something like XCP Rust Blocker Clear Coat. But yea, I totally get the claustrophobia when being under the car.. I live in an old rented farmhouse, and a few years ago I was under the car at the starter, and the farmer/owner ran his herd of cows through the yard.. All I heard was a rumbling and then I saw dozens of hoofs running by next to the car.. It was a bit scary because the ground was literally shaking!

Nope I like the hair dryer technique, could I share one tip I learnt as a laboratory technician, when you have finished spray painting from a can turn the can upside down and spray a few seconds you will see the paint in the nozzle come out with the propellant this ensures the next time you use it the paint hasn't set in the spray apparatus. Lovely video again, Vince. I'm surprised you say youtube don't promote the Rolls videos. I'm always seeing them come up as a subscriber. Anyway, I think they are impressive videos, I'm looking forward to it passing its M.O.T. oh yes the Honda Odysey and some Hyundai's have blue dash lights personally. I love blue.

I have a very very nice battery charger for my car that I bought a few years back. A Victron Blue smart charger (12V/7A), which has an app for your phone, and you connect your phone to the battery charger via bluetooth. So while the thing is charging my cars battery (have to do it once or twice a year), I can be in the house and every once in a while open the app on my phone to see the current charge status :) Victron is a Dutch company. Wasn't a cheap battery charger, but I put that down to how expensive things are here in Australia...

Just one thing on the painting. You need to paint in great sweeps that go from one side to the other in one go. Press the button a small bit before you hit the surface you want to paint and release again after you have cleared it. Don't change direction as you spray and don't start or stop spraying when you are over the surface you want to paint. Very important for even results.

ALSO, when he does surgeries, a low cholesterol patient will have blocked arteries whereas a high cholesterol patient will have little/no blockage! I have asked him many times WHY? An auto parts store should be able to test the battery, at least in the US they do.

That battery is not too bad. Probably ignition but maybe fuel. Check the voltage at the coil when ignition on and then when cranking. Do you have a timing light with inductive pickup? Great for testing starting problems.
