A subscriber asked the question, how do you gain quant finance experience without a masters degree. This is a great question as many undergrads are interested in learning about quant finance but don't know if they will like it or not. So how do you learn more about it before getting a masters? Listen to my videos lol....but no I cover two ways to gain more real world insight to figure out if you will like the industry and how to gain some useful skills before a masters or PhD.

yep... not an apples to apples comparison here but work is so different from studying - worked with an accounting data set that was so goddamn messy and had to build a report around it. @5:00 hit so hard to home

Hello Dimitri, I'm currently studying a Finance bachelor's degree with a Financial Accounting minor. I'm interested in the FP&A career job. And I wanted to know, what do you need for both academic and professional background to get in the mentioned job? Thanks

Is real analysis relevant to quant finance? What about differential geometry? What about topological or abstract algebra?
@DimitriBianco
@DimitriBianco 2 жыл бұрын
For real analysis...yes. It is used to understand stochastic calculus which is used in derivative pricing. I don't know about the other ones off the top of my head but if you google the topic and add "in quantitative finance" you can find examples.

Hi Dimitri, if I want to in depth in High Frequency Trading, what kind of background, material and project I should get to prepare for the interview or convince the interviewer I am relevance to the job? Thank you.

i am not an MFE but still in undergrad studying Business and Economics... a buddy of mine and i came up with an easiest way to be attractive is to start trading a small account then just to show an audited equity curve in ur resume....i am sure its more attractive and can beat any experience or GPA...

@@kayunrtd3514 this can work for traditional finance and investing however for roles like quant research, model development, or model validation it won't work.

@@kayunrtd3514 May I know more about how you start from scratch. I have been reading books but I don't think most of them are relevant to real trading. In addition, I think HFT kind of not able to work out in home regarding to the technical requirement. Thank you.

@@DimitriBianco May I have your advise again regarding how to get involve in HFT? Thank you.
@DimitriBianco

@@mimi-kv6qu it depends on the role you want. A lot of HFT requires a CS background. Getting a CS degree or another quant degree is important. A book you might find interested is called, "Market Microstructure in Practice."

I really want to break into this field but I don't know whether I can do it without an ivy league masters. I'm not even in the US

Dude first prepare for GRE, give GRE, come to US do a MS on public university then do a IB job in IT then move up the scale. I did that & preparing for this moving at a time , since 2011 - 2021 , became the AVP now , just few more years !!! We do the book keeping the models maintaining the data for Audit team. Few more years, absolutely reach there. So my 2 cent, Stop Procatination & Start Working on your dreams !!!!

You can still do the things Dimitri mentioned (i.e. research industry practices, do informal interviews, work on Kaggle projects, get internships for data science, statistics, econometrics, etc.). It will take you a while to do all that and many things can happen during that time. You might find yourself in a position to do graduate studies in a top rated school. 🙂

Hi Dimitri, Can you do a podcast on quant education/work in APAC region? Maybe with an expert who is working there? Would be interesting to see the similarities, differences, recognised programmes compared to North American quant work. Tks!

That would be an interesting interview. I'll keep my eyes open for someone in that region however it is hard to find someone qualified to discuss these sorts of topics.

gonna disagree on this one. Some of my best hires have been candidates that did not have a masters/phd. There is one hire in particular that I made several years ago -- hired them straight out of a big 10 school as an undergrad in engineering. Came into my org -- networked a bunch, worked hard, learned the field (primarily resi on my team), and ended up being one of my most reliable quants. They're leading a small team now, in my org, and decided to get a grad degree about 5 years after starting work. They have a PhD and MS degree holder working under them. Exception to the rule? Perhaps, but this candidate exceled in interviews and marketing their skillset. The candidate made a remarkable impression on my interview team when we first met them. Myth busted a lot of my peers about the whole 'candidate must have a graduate degree to work here' mindset. We prefer them, but we in no way require them.
