In 1940, my great grandmother passed away when my grandma was 9. She left behind 6 kids, so my great aunt, who was 12, had to take over the responsibilities of a mom and a sister. All 6 of them are now deceased, but I'm glad my grandma and great aunt shared that and other stories of how they grew up in Cosby, TN in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Paula, I'm so sorry for the loss of your brother. We share this same loss. My brother passed the same day as your brother. My brother knew you well (a girl from Dalton introduced you two). My brother loved you and came to eat at your place many times. He would have loved this recipe so I will make it on August 15th. Thank you so much for this recipe -- it means more to me than you can know. I love ya Miss Paula and wish you continued success.

The side pan “handles” are so you can flip the pan, when making an angel food cake, and cool the cake. Otherwise, you would have to put a bottle in the middle hole and cool it upside down resting on the bottle.

Yes. You have to cool an angel food cake upside down, or it will deflate.

I think if it was refrigerated or let cool for several hours it might've made it. Or, let the cake cool on its own (no sauce), invert it and then pour the sauce over it kind of like a bundt cake.

You're a sweetie pie...!!!! 🤗 One time..., I baked a pound cake for my husband to take to the guys at his work. Well, something happened and it fell. Don't know what it was..., guess I didn't hold my mouth right...lol...!!!! 🤷 It was so ugly and I told him that I was ashamed for him to take it to work. He told me he was taking it anyway. He made apologies for the appearance, and how I wasn't going to let him bring it. Well, they ate every crumb, and told him that I could make another one just like it anytime I wanted to. So there you go...It doesn't always have to look good to be good.👍 I love you Ms. Paula...!!!! It's so good that you're back showing people about simple cookin'. And don't ever lose that sense of humor. It makes us all smile.😊 You can tell you're a happy person! So glad you're down to earth...!!!! Sending blessings, good energy, and love your way...!!!! 🙏🙌❤🙋✨

It really saddens me because I am starting to forget her voice and how she sounded. Thank goodness, memories are the paradise out of which we can never be driven. Much love to you Miss Paula. I loved hearing your stories about your brother, and making this special cake. My husband lost his precious sister and only sibling, right before our eyes with a stroke last year, and they were very close like you and Bubba. He says the same thing,....that he can't believe he doesn't have a sister anymore. :( It would be disappointing to have the cake fall and break, but that was so darn cute too! lol Like you said...."real life"! That has happened to all of us, so absolutely no worries! Looks incredibly moist and DELISH!! Never had a fig cake, so it's an inspiration to try making one! Love all your quarantine video's. Thank you from Canada, for all your hard work and dedication! :) ~~Mavis~~

It started with you sharing your story about your precious brother so it sort of brought me back to thinking of my departed family members who I also miss. It's such a blessing to have these memories. And the end of the video was too funny listening to that contagious laugh of yours and John's toy sounds couldn't have been any more appropriate for how you were feeling about the cake falling apart. Been looking for this recipe. I am 1 of the people that eat to live. I do enjoy cooking. What is left of my family will be at my home Christmas. My son has gotten to the point he has forgotten his family. It happens so much. But, others gather. I told everyone next year no presents except for kids. I am sewing and crocheting for the homeless and women's shelters. But, still celebrate with a meal. Our Christmas is Ham, potato salad, chicken and dumplings, cornbread, pecan pie, pumpkin pound cake, chips and dip and homemade cheese ball and crackers. Lots of left overs will go home. Nobody has to cook for a day or 2.

Daddy was in the Air Force so we moved around a lot making it hard to visit more than once or twice a year. It was such a special time. The cake pan has the “legs” on it, so that you can coo an Angel Food Cake.

Becky Rogers why does that cake need legs on the pan?

So, those legs are for the angel food cake when it rises very high at times?
@GrammaRosesHomestead
@GrammaRosesHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! I was going to say that if someone else hadn't. You're supposed to cool an Angel Food Cake upside down, and the feet keep it up off the surface. Before tube pans were made with feet, cooks would insert a bottle into the center hole and use that to hold the inverted cake. Since the cake pan is not greased and floured, the cake clings to the sides and won't fall out without running a knife around the edge after it has completely cooled.

I make a fig cake at Christmas because I am allergic to apples, and can’t eat my grandmother’s applesauce recipe. It’s good stuff! 🎄

I would think this cake would be a winner for Christmas!! Even put a bit of rum in the glaze -- with cinnamon and cloves in the cake : it would be just as lovely as a plum pudding -- but not as many candied fruits!

Here in San Diego I used to have a Desert King fig and the large green soft fruit beetles would land on my tree and take a bite out of every other fig to find the ripest, sweetest ones, ARRGGG!! If you have a place to plant a fig, I highly recommend Desert King, they are lime green on the outside and strawberry red on the inside and the skin is soft and thin, delicious!!
