Peeling Back the Layers! - Metal Detecting Finds Early US & Colonial Era Coins at an Old 1700's Farm

Quarter Hoarder

Quarter Hoarder

Жыл бұрын

After a successful metal detecting scouting mission last week, we had found a new location that gave up some really old coins and relics so now we go all in for a full day of hunting. There were acres of cut fields, meadows, and even a late 1700's farmhouse still occupied on the property so we had the odds on our side for a good day. Mother Nature tried to slow us down by throwing a windy, cold, rainy day at us but we still killed it with some incredible old coins, buttons, and the works!

Matt had a great hunt today, and Jason finished strong with that Drape Bust. But DTD (Doug The Destroyer) returned from a well deserved BBQ and, after just two digs, re established himself as the top dog with that buffalo nickle and Irish Hibernia. Once that was uncovered, there was really no poin🙂t in going any Farthing 🙂. Good Show.

I just upgraded to the LEGEND, SNIPER COIL package. Although it's a lot harder then the SIMPLEX. EVERYTHING im finding is between 8" - 11-14" deep. IT'S INSANE HOW DEEP IT'S GOING. I have so much to learn with the settings but with it not being set up right yet, When I do learn to set it up right could I go EVEN deeper!? It's such a great detector and il the way it locks onto the target is insane!!!!

They changed the weight of large cents in 1795 liberty caps during minting to 10.89 grams and no longer lettered the edge of them after. There is no mistaking the almost three gram differential when holding a lettered edge coin and seeing the edge thickness a hart stopping moment for all metal detecting persons.

I was told, the reason why old British coins are mostly slick coming out of the ground is because, when they sent coins over for the fir trade and whatnot, they kept the freshly minted there and sent over the already circulated and worn out coins to North America

Here in England they used to rip up old garments and mix them up in the soil so they would rot, most of the time they never removed the buttons. Do you think they did the same thing in the US, hence all the buttons you find ?

Hi Quarter hoarder In those days those coins would be used a lot even when they were badly worn they would still be in circulation so between the coin being slick when it was lost and being in the ground for 200 years it makes sense they don't have much left on them.

All the Indians I have met on my American travels have never felt insulted being called that. Of course that was in the late 60's and things change, but whether called Indians or Native Americans or whatever, our focus should be on improving their lives , especially those living on Reservations, because they are where these people are subsidized by Government to an extant that there self worth and pride has been destroyed. It's a quandary, do I leave the reservation and merge with the "white " culture or stay here and be locked into a"welfare" type of existence. I'm generalizing but this is not uncommon. So, Call them BUffalo Nickels or Indian Head cents , most don't have a political agenda, if it helps to keep their situations in our minds. Cheers, Rik Spector
