I was told at a young age to never regret passing on a deer if you weren’t confident in the shot. It’s way easier said than done but after losing a couple I knew how true it was.

I'm in my late 50 so I grew up with 2216 Eastman Heavy arrows. Back in the day we never did a weight check.our arrows Would pass through a full frontal shot and exit the rear ham

I have been shooting 720 grains for years, has anyone noticed how much more quiet their bow is? Those heavy arrows take so much energy out of the bow, that it is a lot quieter.

I used to practice shooting through brush when I first started and never had a good experience on a deer. We tune our bows so the arrow goes straight in the animal and doesn't wobble on impact. That gives us optimum pennetration. Hitting any brush even if we hit our mark is similar to letting our vanes hit the cables. The arrow will wobble on impact and we will lose that follow through energy. Thanks for sharing your results so we can all learn from your experiences.

I will always Take the shot I can hit .There is a way into the vitals from every direction or angle . So if you can make the shot take it if not then simply don't . After 45 years of bowhunting there are as many wives tails about deer having to be broadside as the ones about heavy quartered shots .. All it boils down tp is some hunters in the moment do not shoot very well at animals standing at any angle .Lots of hunters do not estimate yardage very well either and do not have well tuned gear so they try to mitigate that with light shafts and fold out heads ..

I tried the switch last year. From 20 yards and in it was awesome. Out past 20 yards the arrow drops so much it basically took away my 30, 35 and 40 yard shot. From 20 to 27 the arrow was so slow the deer reacted dramatically before the arrow got there. I switched back to my light fast arrow set up after a doe ducked an arrow at 26 yards and spine shooting another doe at 25 yards. With my light set up (425 arrow and broadhead) I can shot one pin out to 30 yards and had all the confidence in the world at 35 and 40. If your disciplined to watch deer walk away at 23, 26, 32 yards.....could be the buck of a lifetime at 31 yards broadside the heavy set up for you.

I’ve been hunting heavy adult arrows for 27 of the last40 years. There is no better set up than 3/1 single bevel. You can “take and break , Warb! Troy is spot on! The quieting down of the bow is also understated! You can’t shoot through brush though...... it’s a bow and arrow....????you have to get it in the vitals.

What a perfect first video to share after Turkey 🦃 Tour 21’ is over. Gets everyone fired up even more than they were about archery 🏹 deer 🦌 season and preparing for it. Possibly bumping up their current set up and using those Plan B “Adult Arrows” for the reasons that you illustrated in this video. Thanks for the transparency and speaking against people who might now think that if they have a 600 grain arrow that it’s a Brush Buster arrow like people call 30-30s and 45/70s in the rifle world. My current set up is an “old” PSE single cam bow from 2006, 60 lbs and 29 in draw. My arrows last year were about 510 grain (11.25 Gpi over 29 inches) including a 45 grain outsert and 100 grain broadheads (Magnus Stinger Buzzcut and G5 Montec CS) since I couldn’t find 125-150 grain broadheads anywhere after your Ranch Fairy videos lol Sadly I missed three does from the ground last fall and didn’t draw on a nice 8-10 point, because he never looked down or away. It might have been a quartering too shot also. I have been waiting to send a question about that encounter until the off-season to either the THP IG page or a couple of you guys’ personal IG page to see what your thoughts would be. Thanks again for sharing this informative and thought provoking video.

Due to my job last year, I wasnt able to go through the Ranch Fairy's complete Heavy Arrow setup...But due to what I learned from him I did swap back to fixed blade and touched up my 3 blade, 100 gr G3 broadheads...I was able to shoot a doe at 15 yards totally broadsided and I completely blew through both shoulders...She was down in less then 50 yards...Looking forward to this year...

Two years ago I lost a fine Missouri buck on a quartering to 20 yard shot. From a treestand. I was shooting too light of a set up. Very good advice. Thanks for the video

I'm so thrilled y'all made this video!!! It's really been on my mind about how this arrow set up would give people "Beer muscles" when hunting and a false sense of confidence. But you are so right. I had an invisible branch from an invisible tree deflect my arrow on a shot at an Impala at 18 yards and hit it high and back. Lesson..... beware of invisible trees! Lol! Luckily, we were able to recover the Impala but it was a bad shot..... Appreciate all you guys do. Love your videos. So full of information!

Excellent, informative and honest video. If you hunt long enough, you will encounter all of the situations addressed here. It’s hard to pass on shots, but can be just as thrilling as making one. Wounding and losing deer has caused some to give up the sport.

Great video. I have a hard time getting into the turkey tour because there just aren't any turkeys where I live so I don't hunt them. Can hardly wait for the deer tour to kick off. It keeps the confidence up throughout the season. Best hunting group there is, don't ever change guys.

Thank you for this video. Incredibly informative and transparent. I made the switch like you guys this year and I looking forward to September chasing bugling bulls. I agree with you 100%, shot selection still matters. There's no excuse for selecting to take a poor quality shot. But it's nice to have an insurance policy in case something does happen like hit a stick, the animal moves a few inches. Or the human part comes in and the shot selection is good and the shot is just off a couple/few inches. It happens. Looking forward to this upcoming season.

If you wait for that 20 yd completely broadside leg forward ect ect .you'll miss alot of opportunities ,now that being said you have to be confident in your setup and your skill level if you don't have that then don't shoot ,.

Nice job guys! I also have a long draw so my arrow weight has been higher than average and I have generally been confident in the quartering to shot for some time now but it is key (I think) to have a clear shot as you pointed out in this video.

I had my first experience with a quartering to shot and hitting the shoulder with a light arrow. I should’ve waited for a better shot. The deer survived luckily and I had him on camera all winter. I’m going to a heavier arrow setup (plan B) but I’m thankful for the reminder to be patient and wait for a more broadside shot.

I’m sure you made a slip when referring to “‘at ball and socket joint” of shoulder. Some viewers might have been misled. The video is much appreciated and helpful to me. I’m 81 years old, been hunting every year with bow since 1967, Still having a great time in woods. After watching video, shot my last buck a few days ago through scapula (unintentionally a bit high, but crowded the shoulder more than usual). Lived 12 seconds with thru shot. Keep the videos coming!

Those frontal shots need to be practiced before attempting on a live animal I think 🤔 most people aren’t honest about their shooting me personally will stick with a broadsided shot always but knowing that with the right set up and practice you at least have more options in your arsenal now thanks for the THP honesty but I say again each bow hunter needs to know his or her abilities with their setup and always set your stand for a broadside shot if you can and don’t ever feel bad if you have to let one walk it’s the right thing to do we all have had bucks walk at some point in hunting for me it’s the chess match not the kill that excites me just to know I beat that deer 🦌 that day even if he doesn’t take a ride in my truck 🛻 I know I punched his number that day great 👍 video that’s why I support THP

Ive been playing in the ranch fairy dust. Ive found it to work out well. Less afraid of the shoulder now. Still wont take stupid shots. Itll be ok guys. Just relax. Learn the physics and run with Dr. Ashby's fundmentals. Practice practice practice. And most of all, throw the mechanicals away. Youre going to be fine.

Nice to see more compound shooters using heavier more lethal arrows. Recoverying animals is the game that matters and increasing your chances in doing that is all we can do. Heavier and boneproof arrow is a must. My current setup is 910 grains, 34.2% FOC, long external footing, Tuffhead 300 with a 70# Black Widow recurve. I have been using this basic setup for about 11 years now. It blows up everything it hits, any bone from stem to stern. I like to stay tight to the shoulder area, whether an angled to shot or broadside shot. That decreases the gut shot as much as possible while blowing thru any bone getting to the plumbing in front of heart. If you build your arrow properly and boneproof, you do not need to shy from the best kill shots in front of the animal where the arteries are big.

Great info! I've used the heavy arrows out of my longbow for years, but, I too am very picky about when to shoot. Less venison in my life, but the meat, when I do get one, is sweeter!

I run magnus black hornets, 450 grain arrows with 150 up front. Devastating. I don't ground hunt like you guys, but can confirm they go through shoulders with 27" draw 65lbs elite energy bow. I used to use rage, and they worked, till they didn't. I feel so much more confident shooting at the vital V now. Its amazing that the deer i shoot with magnus, while they leave a slightly less blood trail ( still amazing), go far less distance than a rage broadhead kill. They act like a wild horse when hit with a rage.

15:15-15:33. THE MOST IMPORTANT WORDS IN THIS VIDEO! WIDE OPEN, HEAVY HEAVY ARROW SET UP, CUT ON CONTACT, CLOSE RANGE, LONG DRAW LENGTH, HEAVY POUNDAGE!!! Can't be stressed enough. MOST hunters I know do not shoot anywhere near this energy because they opt for more speed and less critical distance judgement. (ranging estimation forgiveness). This is a GREAT video, one of THP's BEST as long as what they are saying is NOT mis-understood. They are advocating shooting through bones ONLY as a "PlanB" and ONLY with a set up that is extremely high energy. Most set ups I know of do not have enough energy to "cut off the top of the humerus".

Great video guys! I was presented with a frontal shot last year bow season in Wisconsin. The deer was 20 yards walking slowing and closing in on me. I had cleared some branches and brush, so the deer was wide open. I had to make the split second decision on whether I could make the shot. I aimed just right of center and the arrow penetrated what sounded like some ribs (it was loud) and ended up in the top of the heart. The deer took off and took a tumble, then ran about 100 yards out of sight. It was getting dark so I had to wait until the next day to find it. Thanks God I didn't continue searching for it in the dark. I would have just bumped the deer out of the area. Overall it was a good learning experience. I've been hunting for 26 years. I've never taken a frontal shot before and I've never had to leave a deer overnight before. That was hard. But in the end, I learned some things that I'll take with me forever.

I hunt with my dad's old bow, probably 10yrs or so anyway. He got it new back in 92ish. The shop set him up with state of the art Easton arrows in 1992, haha, with 140gr 3 side heads and like you said loaded heavier at the tip. I took it an Amish guy who has a bow shop, that's his business, and ask if he'd just go over it and new sights and tune. It hadn't been in years. I went back to get it and he said he hadn't seen that heavy of a head in years. He asked if I hunt bear with it. I said no, but I really didn't realize the heads were that heavy. I still don't know how many gr the entire set up is, I'd imagine with those old arrows it's probably between 550 and 625. Needed new fetching as well. My dad and I both are big frame guys and he said the pull was at 85lbs. I really never new any different till lately, I knew the trend was to go to light and fast, always interested in that but never seen a reason to spend the money and make the switch. I, like everyone else, never purposely took a shot knowing I was going to hit bone because I didn't want to take a chance. I know it has broken them and continued on through. Oh, and I don't take shots really much over 35yds maybe 40. Not that I can't, but I just had fear that the deer would hear it and have too much time to react and I wound him.

Fantastic video. It's definitely easy to get overconfident in your setup, especially when you spend so much time and money on it and then you only have limited opportunities to take a shot. You really want to believe you can make every shot. Thanks for the reminder that some shots aren't worth taking, and for letting us learn from your experiences.

Drew back on a beautiful 8 point last night 15 yards quartering to me at the bait pile. I waited 10 minutes to get a better shot placement, fingers cold and arms fatigued I let off and the lower cam made a slight noise on the climber. Buck took off. Glad I didn't make a poor shot, but it was a difficult walk back to the cabin.

The frustration & regret at a bad shot is what you should feel. It means you care........i was looking at the Tenn. doe shot with the red dot. I would of aimed 1/2 way between the red dot & the center (brisket) line. = Double lungs & heart, nothing but ribs in the way. I've made it at least once with XX78s. But, the same shot straight on is a one lung shot. The center punch shots are new to me. But, I can see the heart, veins & arteries being cut too. Except for that shot, aim for the exit. Feathers can help deflection, a little in the back. But, not in the front. Although, I'd still keep those quartering to shots below 30 yards & in the clear. Great video guys!

I just changed setups this past fall because of an incident with my buddy few yrs back almost losing a nice buck cause of a light arrow setup. And I made a terrible shot on a 19 1/2 in 8 point this past fall. He was chasing a doe and moved on me at release and I hit him to far back quartering away hard. Because I went heavy I was able to get enough penetration to kill that buck. Had I still been with our previous setups I wouldnt of killed him. So glad I listened to yall and troy. Even bullets deflect through brush, I only take shots on coyotes through brush with a gun, brush will deflect anything. Even buckshot. Im confident in my 650 set up but brush is bad

Thanks for the update, very helpful information. My set up, 543 grains last year blew through several shoulder blades no problem. 650 grains this year. Kudu Contour broad heads. Those cutthroats broadheads look really great too.

On a frontal shot within 10 yards I recommend shooting mid neck dead center of the neck. I killed 150 inch whitetail on a hand held decoy setup. It cut his windpipe, both neck arteries, and paralyzed him. Again 10 yards and in, him not moving, looking at you. He collapsed and then expired in less than 5 seconds. I was able to see the outline of his wind pipe and aimed right on the crease. He was slightly angled two his right, my left, so I aimed at his left side of his oesophagus. Do what you feel comfortable with, good luck.

Shot my biggest buck threw a hole in a tree at 8 yds. The small leaves covered the branch. My arrow cut the branch in half and Deflected from the shoulder to the gut. I found the deer but not till 5 days later. Made me sick! I hate making a bad shot. Great video guys!! People need to hear this stuff!!

I'm shooting 730g total arrow weight. 265g tuffhead single bevels, 250 spine blackeagle carnivores. My bow is so quite with heavier arrows.

Great video guys!! Good info! I did he math several years ago. With regard to momentum, you cannot substitute speed for weight. You can’t safely lighten your arrow enough to produce the speed momentum to compare with momentum by weight. I immediately went to an 80# draw with 500 gr arrows. After watching your show, I will be going to a cut on contact this year.

I took a risky shot last fall. Mind you, I hunt with a rifle not bow, but I am really not confident outside my 100 yard sighted range. I have also only been hunting for two years at that point. I finally snuck up on a whitetail after a spot and stalk for about a km and found him in a small bush at the bottom of a draw at about 30 yards. Unfortunately, he saw me as well. He was standing broadside but had thick brush/trees covering everything except his shoulder to head. I knew if he was going to move from that spot it wasn't going to be slow. I haven't ever made the decision to go for anything other than heart and lung before but while I was looking at him I remembered a video I watched on high shoulder shots. I was super nervous but was confident with the range. My first ever deer to drop on the spot (not that my other two ran far either). Not sure I would take that shot again unless I had no other choice or a couple more years of experience under my belt.

great Video!! And great advice, don't try to take a "risky" shot but things don't always go right. Wait for close range, use a heavy set up to drive it home and beyond. I am shooting a 548 grain arrow at 316 fps (121 ft pounds of energy) my "heavy" set up is 800 grains at 264 fps, nearly identical energy output.

My X Impact hunting arrows finish out at 421 grains with a 80 grain outsert and 100 Grain fixed 3 blade Exodus broadhead. Been using this set up for a few years. I have zero penetration issues. I will never use a expandable Broad head! Those are designed for bows that are not tuned 100% correctly. I’ve seen way too many things go wrong with expandable BH. I am playing around with the Iron Will broadheads at the moment. I may be switching to them for next season

I shot at my first buck with a bow last year hit him in the exact same spot with a 400 grain setup with a rage hypodermic and got about 3 inches of penetration. 150 class ten pointer woulda been my first bow buck. I'm switching to a cut on contact and high foc this year for sure.

With my setup I’m not scared to shoot an elk at 50 in the shoulder. Just over 600 grains cut on contact Annihilator broadhead and 76 lbs. now I just have to find an elk

I wasn't taught to take hero or zero shots ! I was taught the patience of waiting for the right shot and if I didn't get it , I still had the story. I come from an old line of archery hunters and Fred handed me my 1st bow. TS

I agree with everything said about heavy all the way and heavier up front now. Wished I did the last 10 years because I’ve lost some very good Midwest bucks because I hit shoulder with a light arrow and Rage broadheads. I harvested some good ones too but the biggest I’ve ever seen while hunting got away because I made a shoulder shot with a light arrow and expandable head. I blame modem day bow marketing (and myself for not making perfect shots of course) of speed and light/100g expandable broadheads.

Took a 12 yard shot at one quartered to last season, my cam hit my tree stand and threw my shot off. Ended up going through chest and out the offside shoulder (I believe). Tracked blood for hours and eventually lost blood and never found it 😭

Feel ya I lost one to last year but I knew better but this year I put up some blockading on the trail to direct the deer so I can get a broadside shot this time

1. Know what your setup will do, at all yardages. It is not the same at 15 yrds and 45 yrds. 2. Know your capabilities. 4 yrs ago I passed a 12 yrd quartering to shot, not because it was quartering to, but because of my shooting position. 6 days later, I harvested the same buck at 45 yrds. I made the switch 6 years ago because the mechanical didn’t penetrate far enough. Another thing to watch for is arrow speed really slows down on a long shot, I’m shooting 743 grain setup with 32” draw length 64 pounds 30 yards is my maximum distance because of the drop. Great video! But the higher the number goes on a arrow acually means its lighter and more flexible. I shoot a 300 spine arrow with fixed broad heads I have a 31 1/12" draw length. And a 80lbs bow. Good luck this season I really enjoy your videos they keep me motivated when I go out and come back empty handed lol.

I started last (my second at 54years old) season with 450ish arrow, 125 grain Magnus Black Hornet. I hit a buck in the scapula at about 15 yards (55lbs), buried the head about 4 inches, broke the head off the arrow and that's the last time I saw him. Followed the blood trail the following day, several globs of blood then nothing. I watched the RF vids and redid my setup to 605 grain arrow but I didn't have any chances the rest of the season. Looking forward to getting out again.

I made the change this year to a 300 spine 5mm FMJ at 27.5in with a 75 grain outsert and 125 grain crimsontalon g3 and I’m gonna try the iron will 125s with the bleeders! I’ve always shot mechanicals and I’ve had good success but last year I had a broadhead failure so I decided it was time! Love the channel guys! Bring on the fall 🤘🏹🦌
