Make it easy to understand the most democratic gemstone, and one of the top two most plentiful on the earth. Quartz has many colours and cousins, so today I break it down for you.
A big thank you to GCI Lab and Nazo Anna for sharing their quartz specimens for today's video.

I was just teaching my daughter about quartz yesterday. This is a timely video for us, and a more thorough explanation than I was able to give. Thank you! We enjoyed it!

Thanks for the video Peter. So many names for such a common material, a beautiful material I might add. I never knew Jasper was a type of Quartz to be honest. Rog.

I'll agree, it can be beautiful material indeed. Humanity was quite fortunate to have something so attractive be so much more available.

Thanks, that was wildly educational and entertaining. Question: Do the micro and crypto crystaline stones facet less well than the "truly" crystaline stones?
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks 5 ай бұрын
You can definitely facet the micro and crypto-crystalline varieties, as they're quite tough. They just don't benefit as much from the scintillation of internal light reflection. If you're looking to put some sparkly reflection on the top of the stone, that's definitely doable. Long story short - can do it, but result is less exciting.

I have come across multiple large gemstones and would like to sell them but don't know how. For example I have a 224.70carat Emerald (Beryl) Round loose gemstone. Help.

Hi Peter I was wondering if you could help me with a question I have on Alexandrite gemstones,I have recently had a few Czochralski pulled Alexandrites and some do the colour change to ruby red and some have no colour change?is this normal do all Alexandrites change colour or can some have no colour change.
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks 5 ай бұрын
Hi Oakley, i would expect there to be colour change on synthetic alexandrite. Of course they'd need to be tested to say much further, but there may have been some other similar looking stones mixed in (accidentally or intentionally) to the parcel.

What about opal? Isn't that also a type of quartz, but with no crystals at all?
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks 5 ай бұрын
Opal is made up of silical gel spheres, so there is some real similarity chemically. Very close observation~

Peter, you say citrine is quartz, but it can truly cut glass. Can You broaden ? As for the Amethyst, it has hardness 7, thou tnere are different diamond coloring. Thank You, Teodor
@briancurtis6022
@briancurtis6022 5 ай бұрын
Citrine has a hardness of 7 too, so both it and amethyst can cut glass (usually 5.5).
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks 5 ай бұрын
Excellent point, Brian. @teodor Anything harder than glass that is able to sustain a point should be able to break the surface tension of glass and therefore cut it. If we look at the commercially available glass cutting tools with a wheel, what is the wheel made out of? Strong chance that many of those are just hardened steel (often 7-8 mohs). Glass is chemically similar to quartz, but the crystalline structure is important. Just like diamond is "just carbon" but has a different crystal structure that makes it incredibly hard.

Supply chain is a peculiar thing indeed. My philosophy is that I just buy the items that I believe to be genuinely rare, at a price that im prepared to accept. If the vendor wont come down to my price point, then we don't have a sale and I just move on with my life.

Is a 39 carat custom cut vivid deep purple/golden *Bolivian Ametrine (untreated) for $1,100 a rip off? I dont want to be disrespectful because it is a VERY rare gem but its just quartz… a non-valuable gem.
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks 5 ай бұрын
At the end of the day, the price point of any object is agreed upon between the buyer and the seller. To know what is a "good deal", you need to look at comparable goods that are available in the market. If there is nothing else similar, then its just down to negotiation.
