I have both kinds of watches automatic and quartz and some of the third kinds digital. None of them are expensive watches. But all have their own things that attracted me to them. I appreciate the mechanics of the automatics in an automatic self-winding watch. They are excellent if worn every day and they keep themself running. Otherwise, they will rundown, and you have to reset time along with date if it is on the watch. But there are winding devices you can buy to keep them on while not in use. The quartz just keeps on going till the battery needs replacing. I do know some people who if not using a quartz watch for a while. Will pull the crown and stop the watch from running to save battery life. Digital watches well that’s a whole different story. But no matter what you have so long as you like it and enjoy it and it keeps good time that's all that matters. I am reminded of the story when it comes to watch brands. A man on a train station asked two people what time it was. One man looked at his $3000.00 watch and told him the time was 3.25. Fifteen minutes later he asked another man what the time was The second man looked at his $10.00 watch and said 3.40 But in this day and age anyone who has a phone has a watch. So why do we keep buying watches? Is the real question

I have enough to do in my life. I just want a watch that works; not babying it or having to keep an eye on it like a teenage daughter. I have two automatics that both run within COSC. It's still not good enough.

For starters. I have 2 quartz watches that lasted beyond the 20-year mark (change the battery every 3-years). Automatics can differ even from the same company. Take Techo Marine and Invicta. The Invicta is more accurate than the Techo Marine. They have different movements. But same price point at time of purchase. But you should add some watch winders can't rewind some watches because their motions can rewind the movements.

With the atomic app available on the iPad the conventional mechanical watch can exist. Especially if it is a manual wind. Everyday you wind the watch it is quite easy to adjust the time. Mechanical watches are accurate enough to exist . Mechanical watches should only tell time. iPhones apps are so much better . You wear a watch to quickly tell you to tell the time. Therefore what brand in most cases is a ego decision. A classic man’s dress watch like. Vacheron Constantin is usually a one function devise. It tells time. If you need more than time use your iPhone.

Would be common sense to use Quartz as a time keeping piece. Why the mechanical watch is so accepted is sometimes we do not want to chase perfection but the imperfection.

I have about 12 quartz watches and 2 automatics. None are worth mega bucks. I look in my glass topped watch case (£16 + p&p from Amazon) and they all tell the same time. Auto's are + > - 5>25 seconds a day. I do appreciate there is more work in a mechanical watch. But do think there is a lot of snobbery involved. Imho.

Go get a service as far as you can. 25 years without servicing a mechanical caliber are too much. Rolex suggests to get a service every 8/10 years. Different is the case of the Co-Axial technology of Omega’s calibers that consent to prolong times of services more than over 10 years. After 25 years the lubricant oil will be pretty dry, so the more you use your Submariner the more the parts of the caliber will get consumption and one day some parts will break and then you gonna have to spend a lot more, than a simple servicing, to replacing them

Bad idea. Watches are like any other mechanical devices. If you skip service, it may cost you more in the long run.

Let me guess, you change your motor oil only when the light turns on? Get that thing serviced. Maintenance is way cheaper then Rolex needing to replace parts because of excessive wear.

False. The quartz movement was due to the work of Bell Laboratories (the telephone people). Seiko was the first to put such a movement in a practical wristwatch, which was made possible by the same Bell Labs, whose employees invented the modern transistor.

@@Simplicimus1945 if I'm wrong ..... Then who came up with the quartz movement? Probably spring drive isn't Seikos.....

@@mariodelatorre3211, the quartz movement has been a thing since the late 1920’s; it’s that Seiko was the first to put a quartz movement in a wristwatch. It’s like claiming Apple invented television, because they were the first to put it in a phone; it’s been a thing for over a century now.

If you're the punctual person and value your time, so you will check and correct your watch every moment before you go out, then the mechanical watch runs+/-25sec a day won't get you in any trouble. But if you are not a punctual person, a very accurate quartz watch still can't get any help...😅
